Album release dates, a fickle fickle mistress for dedicated fans around the world. With the huge commercialization of everything in this world, the music industry and fans were inevitably doomed from the start. Marketing albums in every way possible has become the trend of the 21st century, even the lack of marketing is inherently marketing because it gets people talking about the album. The result? Fans waiting in limbo for the albums they’ve been dying to hear all year to finally be released commercially.

Not all artists make their fans wait, notably Bey once, Aphex Twin, Thom Yorke, and unfortunately U2 have surprised fans with albums surfacing out of nowhere. With record labels and distributors getting almost all of the proceeds from a musicians creative genius, the process of the releasing an album takes months and months to finally release an album. Yet, in the technologically savvy 21st century we live in, the record labels and distributors can’t always keep their products under wraps. Many times albums get leaked by someone along the way or surface on one music sharing platform or another for music listeners to plunder for free.

Album release dates can also be skewed in the online streaming age the music presently finds itself consumed in. Many major music publications or blogs gain access to the albums prior to release dates for reviewing. Many times as well as reviewing the records labels will grant the publication rights to stream the album to their viewers a few days prior to the physical release date of the album. The streaming release date is yet again another attempt to market the album to entice the pallets of music lovers to go out and buy a hard copy of the album.

Along with reviewing and streaming up and coming album releases, most good music publications will have a list of all the upcoming released and the date they will be released to the public. These lists are a great way for music aficionados to receive knowledge of what albums should be anticipated and what artists have been making new music. Looking further into the list in most cases, seeing a name of one of your favorite artists on an upcoming album release list, fans can likely anticipate and up and coming tour or set of promotional shows for the album.

Album release dates must be taken with a grain of sand because in the end, baring over bearing record labels with dead set deadlines, it’s up to the musicians to say whether or not their album is ready for the public to behold. Musicians inherently have a bit of the perfectionists genes in them, they don’t want to release something they don’t feel completely at peace with how it sounds to them. Rightfully so, they have their names attached to it and would you want to put out something you didn’t like with your name on it? Album release dates give a broad sense of timing in which an artist might be likely to release and album and as the time approaches more concrete dates may be set. Just keep patiently and vigilantly on the lookout and you’ll always know when you’re favorite artists album’s been dropped.
