DC Movie Universe! What It's All About!
How It Began
This all began with a phrase that was udder from actor Harry Lennix..Lennix walked up to the podium into Hall H at San Diego Comic Con and when he he took a breathe and started to speak the words that would literally "change everything" next to moderator Chris Hardwick...Nothing was the same again. Lennix started off with the now iconic phrase from the Frank Miler novel "The Dark Knight Returns" where Batman does indeed face off against Superman and if you want to know how it all works out I will let you either watch the animated film or read the book. But when the reading took place the Hall went nuts with some fans knowing the reading and some not getting it until the big reveal of the new logo for the new film. If you were to Youtube it now you can find it all over but hearing the words spoken and almost all the way through and hearing someone in the crowd yell "OH MY GOD!!!!!" showed that they had already won over one person in the crowd at least for sure. The definitive thing was by the logo and title was that Batman would face off against Superman in 2016.
Later on down the road it was announced that the full official title for the first film in the DC movie universe would be Batman Vs Superman:Dawn Of Justice. Now while some were already sold off of the first three words some were a lot quicker to just shut down the rumors and thoughts of this being good and being considered a "Good, Strong Title". Some mocked the title and called it "Batman Vs Superman Vs Rowe Vs Wade" and while it is clever and funny at the end of the day the title is fitting for something that does end up becoming a fight.
The Announcement Of "The Slate"
After a certain amount of time Marvel Studios and DC both took their turns and released what was called "Slates". Slates are basically going to be the new things that I can see Hollywood doing now and when Marvel Studios did it they had announced all their movies for the next 7-8 years I believe at the Mann's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles and made it a spectacle event which basically made Comic Con and afterthought and something they didn't feel the need to show up to since they already covered everything there. But when DC did their slate and released it they are a lot more "Professional" and "Commercially Driven" about it by just not making it a spectacle and announcing it to the public for everyone to see.
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder (2016)
- Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer (2016)
- Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot (2017)
- Justice League Part One, directed by Zack Snyder, with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams reprising their roles (2017)
- The Flash, starring Ezra Miller (2018)
- Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa (2018)
- Shazam, (2019)
- Justice League Part Two, directed by Zack Snyder (2019)
- Cyborg, starring Ray Fisher (2020)
- Green Lantern (2020)
After reading through what is offered the fan favorite announcement was that Warner Brothers would actually be bringing the Squad together in Suicide Squad and putting out a real life legit Harley Quinn in Margot Robbie playing her. Another few numerous castings were Will Smith playing Deadshot and after a few missed steps by him some thought he wouldn't actually do such a gritty film being directed by David Ayer who did such films like Fury and End Of Watch. 2017 will be the first showing of Wonder Woman in a large scale starring Gal Gadot. Now I will cover the overall castings in the next part of this article but when Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman some thought of her just as the girl from the last few Fast and Furious films and then some just looked back and forth and said "Who??". But nonetheless being able to have the opportunity to build the foundation for Diana/Wonder Woman being undercover in Dawn Of Justice in 2016 then totally coming out of her shell and being her powerful self and showing her true story and character and being able to also being a great role model for younger girls too so if they are into these films instead of liking Thor then they have their own powerful character to look after as well. 2017 also brings the big punch of DC getting their turn at the "All superhero team up" with Justice League Pt.1. Now I know when the dust settles on all the Avengers movies theres gonna be like 5 or 6 or however much but with this it looks like the story is going to be much more based on the characters in their own films instead of having this long fight to the end like Avengers is doing. Don't get me wrong I am excited for the Avengers movies remaining because I wanna see people like Chris Pratt and Downey stare in Thanos's eyes before fighting with him somewhat and it has built into that but this isn't Marvel Studios and thats not how DC does things. After Justice League Part 1 it looks like were getting a standalone Flash film starring Ezra Miller who I recognize from "Perks Of Being A Wallflower" and before you sit here reading this and are screaming at your computer about how Grant Gustin would be better cause he's the Flash on TV which I agree he would but at the end of the day its not the same storyline they want to work from. 2018 Jason Mamoa signed on to become the role of Aquaman..Now some who know and understand it will say "You mean the role isn't Vincent Chase's??" But they are ACTUALLY making a real Aquaman movie that isn't being done on an HBO show and the first photo shown of Mamoa in his full get up shows Jason looking MENACING. Whether its the hair, tattoos or armor he has on he most definitely looks like a force to be reckoned with and rumor has it you will see him briefly in Dawn of Justice as well. 2019 brings on the Shazam film and now not a lot has been known about this film for another week maybe since Comic Con is next week but what we have is a release date and that the man himself Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is playing Black Adam in the film. I mean I know its not a lot to give but at the end giving you a date and The Rock is better then nothing.2019 also shows the 2nd half of the Justice League films and as of right now is the end of the series so whoever the big bad villain is in the film and someone who could take on every member of the League and beat them must be someone very strong and make for one interesting movie.2020 is when we start getting into the risky films and we start with Cyborg starring Ray Fisher who will play a pre Cyborg character in Dawn of Justice and then you will be able to see him in all of his glory and suit in about 4-5 years give or take. Around the same year DC and Warner Brothers is going to have another go at Green Lantern. Now I am going to be up front with the readers a few times in this article and I am going to start and tell you that when I first saw the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern I didn't think it was as bad as advertised until I let it sit on me for a bit then I realized how off the wall it was and I am not as well versed in the books like my brother is and he said they went totally off book for that movie so it was a miss for the studio on that one.
Those were just the ones announced....There are rumors that Ben Affleck being the caped crusader that he will direct the new Batman film in 2018 that will be titled "I Am The Batman" possibly and of course another solo Superman film somewhere around the Batman film before 2020 when the slate ends.
Castings and The Casting That Shook The World
Ok this article will cover the many basis and I am going to go with hurdles that the DC Movie universe has had to go with since trying to get off the ground. After the "Dark Knight Trilogy" was over and Rises made all of its money and then the big question was when there was talk of another Batman film will Bale be back??? There was rumors that Warner Brothers offered him 50 million dollars to come back and play the role again for 1 film! I know you can't get world peace for 50 million dollars but you can definitely do something with it. He later definitely put the nail in the coffin and said he was moving past Batman and someone else would take over the helm. That man's name is none other then Ben Affleck..When I heard Affleck was announced I literally wanted to cry because of Daredevil and how he wasn't dramatic but in the span of a year and the shock of Bale wore off he came out with Argo and The Town and literally I don't care what anyone says I will take all the hate in the world for that man because Argo had him in talks for Best Director honors and it even won Best Picture!!! Like I just had to take a deep breathe grow up and get over it but when I did I realized for a very dramatic film they found the best person to play an older Bruce Wayne.
Henry Cavill and the remaining cast from Man Of Steel are some of the ones returning to Dawn of Justice and being able to still play their roles and Gal Gadot was something that was mentioned earlier in the article as well as someone who has barely been in anything so people are choosing to write her off instead of giving her the benefit of the doubt. Now having Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher into the fold as well adds to the dramatic side especially for Fisher since I guess he used to work on his acting chops over in London on stage. Miller was one of the standouts in "Perks" and is still making a big name for himself in what he does.
Another big casting and probably the biggest one that caused the biggest grief along with the Ben Affleck casting was the casting of Jared Leto as the brand Joker in the Suicide Squad film. Now for everyone reading I am going to be a billion percent up front with you and tell you that when Leto's name was up for Doctor Strange and The Joker I didn't think in a million years it would happen and he would agree to do it. Because I am BEYOND a fan of him and his acting and his music so for me this is a little tough to justify how he will be. When I heard it I just told my friends that I know he won't be a slouch at what he does because he's basically notorious for being a "Method" actor and going to next degree on everything and even being the character until he gets called off set for good. So when you are someone as diabolical and crazed as The Joker people on the set are either in for something thats going to cause problems or they are in for something as special as to what Heath Ledger did in The Dark Knight. Now I know again readers I spoke those words and I just compared him to the GREATEST on screen comparison of the Joker ever but I will again tell you that above my 30 Seconds To Mars tattoo on my lower arm is Heath Ledgers Joker on my left bicep so if anyone is deep into this its this guy. During The Joker's anniversary when they released the first ACTUAL shot of Leto as the joker from David Ayer's Twitter and from my point of view I enjoyed the hair and tattoos and how all in all it was different take on the iconic character. But man I don't think I have ever felt more backlash in my life when I looked into it more. Some things I saw were "Why god why?" "This doesn't look like Heath Ledger at all" "How is it this The Joker" "The Damaged Tattoo is a little on the nose" and my all time favorite "He looks like an ICP member who's shopping at Hot Topic". I later did the wrong thing when I went down the rabbit hole with this reviewer and fought with him over it reminding him that Ayer is a Method director who did things like made people in Fury fight each other to really capture their anger and even in Suicide Squad theres a "Psychotherapist" on set to basically keep people from going off the deep end and having a method director teaching a method actor who just won an Oscar I feel good that he can deliver.
Another surprising one but isn't as shocking was Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and this one was where he showed up on movie sets with barely any if next to no hair showing his commitment on shaving his head and looking as much as humanely possible to the mogul. In some recently released Entertainment Weekly shots it shows that Eisenberg has long long hair and obviously loses his stuff then shaves it off completely to become the bald and dominate one everyone knows. Again much like the first Leto shot after seeing the pic of Eisenberg with hair people just went crazy saying that he looked like Kevin Bacon in a bad comedy and it was one of the biggest mistakes that the film could make was showing how he lost the hair and that at the end of the day no one cares.
In a week or 2 is San Diego Comic Con where it looks like Star Wars and Warner Brothers are the big names to bring the heat to Hall H during the weekend. At the Warners panel it is being said that we will see a FULL layout for Dawn Of Justice and possibly Suicide Squad. The basic concept was to have the full cast of both there for the hour and even have releases of posters and even showings of clips and possibly even a new trailer for Dawn Of Justice after the big reveal event they had at movie theaters a few months back. No matter what happens I have a feeling that since there was SO many haters and people who just weren't on bored with anything involving DC until Batman Begins came out then after that and The Dark Knight it totally changed everything so I am crossing my fingers that lightning strikes twice and that all DC fans get a very good treat and everything pays off well for them Comic Con weekend and in the near future.
