DISH Introduces New Hopper App

Updated on January 11, 2013

Early this week, DISH introduced its new app for the Hopper: DISH Explorer for iPad. The new app is an innovative, social media-saturated, second remote control for the Hopper and Joey system that allows for a more interactive TV viewing experience.

What does it do?

You can already get online and watch your DISH programming with the Sling Adapter, so what does this do? Instead of working as a remote access tool, this app functions as a companion to watching DISH programming on your Hopper. It’s meant to be used in conjunction with at-home TV viewing by making it a richer and more convenient experience. Here are a few details:

· See what everyone’s watching. You can keep track of what your friends on social media are watching so you’re never out of the loop when they bring up their favorite shows. Want to know what’s hot in your area? The app will do that, too, by showing you the most popular shows by location. It also incorporates social media conversation about the most talked-about shows in realtime, so you can find something new, catch up, or tune in.

· Use it as a remote control for your Hopper. Not only can you use the app to access your guide and change the channel right on your iPad, but you can also use it to tune into your DVR recordings and On Demand programs. The DISH Explorer app also features a tap-to-watch function that allows you to instantly tune into a program you’re engaging with on social media.

· Get social. The app features descriptions and information on live shows, plus sidebars that show you who’s watching, how popular the show is, and Twitter and Facebook conversations from fans in real time. That way, you can learn more or tune into the gossip with fans who appreciate the show as much as you do. Ever watch an episode and experience a “WOW!” moment that you just have to tell someone about? Enter the social media features of the DISH Explorer app, which give you an instant, immediate audience so you can share and discuss.

How much is the DISH Explorer app?

This is usually a customer’s first concern when considering an app, and for good reason. There’s no return policy on apps, so you have to make sure it’s going to be worth it. I think you’ll find that this one certainly is. You may think that with all the innovative and advanced features of the DISH Explorer app, you’re going to be adding a few dollars to your next bill. However, this app is actually free to all DISH Hopper customers!
