DVD Review: Fireproof (Special Collector's Edition)

Updated on July 24, 2014

The Kendricks Brothers have produced some of the best family and Christian movies currently available on DVD including the one I am about review.

I first got introduced to their work with the film Courageous and it was one of the best Christian family oriented films I had seen in a while so when my sister brought the Special Collector’s Edition of Fireproof, I just got into it.

Anyway, let’s get started.

About the Kendricks Brothers

Before we jump into the film, I believe a brief introduction might be needed about the Kendricks Brothers.

The Kendricks are Stephen and Alex who operate a production company making movies to help spread the word of Christ.

Alex is also an associate Pastor at the Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia which is the setting for the film.

Film review

The movie Fireproof is about a couple who face the ultimate test in their marriage. Caleb and Catherine have been married for seven years and have slowly drifted away from each other. The commitments of work and temptation have pushed them further apart until they forget how to love and eventually file for divorce.

But when Caleb consults his father he is presented with a challenge, a 40 day dare, which may just save their marriage or drive him insane.

The film is written and directed by the Kendrick brothers, Alex and Stephen, who created another Christian masterpiece, Facing the Giants; which I haven’t seen yet. But judging by a couple of their works I’ve had the pleasure of viewing I am sure it will be a blessing to watch. The main actors in the film are Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea.

Cameron and Bethea did some good acting in the film and actually had me in tears toward the end. I know there’s the common adage that guys aren’t supposed to cry but the film was so touching that I couldn’t help myself. There were also comedic moments that had me bursting with laughter like the scene hose stretcher prank and there were moments when I felt my heart singing with joy.

This film brings the word of God and lessons of life right into your home. There have been numerous films on the topic of relationships and marriage. However, most have not been able to capture the honesty and simplicity of love like this one has. There are also other issues like pornography and lust (maybe adultery) that are carefully incorporated into the film making it a worthwhile film for couples.

What's on the DVD?

There are a number of features on the special collector’s edition DVD that add value to this diamond of a film. These include study guides, deleted scenes, pranks played on set, ministry tools, a commentary by the Kendrick brothers and many more.

The commentary is probably the most exciting bonus on the DVD. The Kendrick brothers tell us symbolic meanings of certain elements in each scene, the backstory, and many other interesting details that we could not have known if we had only watched the film. They also explain how Catherine and Caleb meet which plays an important role toward the end of the movie.

There is also a SafeEyes, an internet filter you can install from the DVD for both Mac and PC and a music video of Casting Crown’s single Slow Fade.

Thank you. You might also like Courageous. Its about fatherhood and the implications it has on a child's development.
