Dancing With The Stars – Season 9, Episode 18 – Week 9 Performance Show

Updated on November 17, 2009

Tonight each couple had 3 dances, and the third round was the “knock-out” dance that they had developed in case they were in one of the dance-offs.  Also, the stars are each required to do a solo in their Latin dances.

Donny & Kym

1st Dance – Tango – Well, it was the least passionate Tango I have ever seen.  I figured it would be a struggle for Donny because he is so very religious.  The dancing was good for the most part, though there were some footwork struggles, but Kym’s skirt was dangling a strip of hem or something and I think that may be the cause of much of the footwork issues.  It wasn’t bad, it just felt more happy-go-lucky than any Tango I have ever seen, and once the hem issue started he just seemed to be barely keeping himself together.  I actually went back and re-watched and they were both, at one point, entirely angled up in her hem—I SO commend them for keeping it together as well as they did, especially if Donny was following along with her improvisation.

Carrie Ann:  Not a lot of the push and pull, the light and shade, none of the drama though she is sure there was a lot in his head.  She thinks they handled the “costume misfortune” really well (Donny said they were making stuff up, I suspect the issues stood out more to judges who had seen this in rehearsals already and knew what it was supposed to look like.), it was rough but way to make it to the end.

Len:  He said he is not sure what it was, that their Argentine Tango that was so great that was so recent, or Kym’s dangling hem (Donny said it was that he saw Marie).

Bruno:  He said Donny completely lost it.  He said usually he is a “Master of Disguise,” it’s happened before and he cover it up and tonight he couldn’t cover it up.  And at this stage of the competition it’s completely tragic.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 7, Len - 7, Bruno – 7 | TOTAL: 21

2nd Dance – Samba – I thought it was so much fun to watch.  And I thought his solo was great.  That man can really move his hips!  I have a crush on Donny all over again like I did when “The Donny & Marie Show” was on!

Carrie Ann:  She said it was better than the last one, obviously, but it felt a little sloppy for him.  She said he is an incredible performer and she felt like he was dancing a little small (Carrie Ann obviously took something that has messed with her judgment sometime before the last 2 dances!).  She says she expects so much from him because she knows he has it.

Len:  He said he can’t agree with Carrie Ann.  It’s an absolute metamorphosis, after the first dance, he came out strong.

Bruno:  He said a bit of a stumble doesn’t stop a professional coming back and nail it.  It was carefree, fun, that’s what a Samba should be and that’s what you did.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 8, Len - 9, Bruno – 9 | TOTAL: 26

3rd Dance – Jitterbug – So fun!  The Jitterbug really suits Donny’s personality, high energy and fun.  I thought he gave it 150%!  These last dances are shorter, and I was wishing it was a full length dance!

Carrie Ann:  She said he needed this dance to be good and thank god he got his mojo back!

Len:  3 dances, and two out of three ain’t bad because this was a another winner!

Bruno:  Upbeat, full of vigor, and something I could not understand that ended with St. Patrick’s Day (I guess a reference to their green outfits.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 9, Bruno – 9 | TOTAL: 27

Donny & Kym’s Total:  Round 1: 21 + Round 2: 26 + Round 3: 27 = 74

Joanna & Derek

1st Dance – Viennese Waltz – Overall I thought they looked really beautiful.  Her footwork still struggled a bit, but was much better than last week during the Quickstep.  Her arms out of hold are what stood out to me as a bit off, especially during the beginning bits.  Generally, though, I really liked it a lot.  At one point one of her steps landed a bit on the tip of Derek’s shoe, and I thought she handled that quite well.

Carrie Ann:  She says she watches her and thinks about how she started, but she trusted him and she has seen her grow into this amazing statuesque beauty when she dances.  She took her breath away,.  One note, when you reach you have to know why you are reaching,

Len:  He said their hold when they are dancing together is as good as any professionals, her posture is great and she looks fantastic.  He loved the choreography.  He commented that there were a few odd things, including some moments with her hands.  But overall, it was a beautiful dance.

Bruno:  He said this Waltz had the grace of angels in heaven, but there was the slight hesitation that didn’t allow it to quite go off to paradise, but fantastic Waltz.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 9, Bruno – 9 | TOTAL: 27

2nd Dance – Cha Cha Cha – I expected a little more I think.  Her solo was really basic.  And then, though she did a good job with her hips, she needs to really work on connecting the steps into a fluid piece, not just a series of steps.  It was not bad, by any means, but it just didn’t floor me.

Carrie Ann:  She said she loves it and loves how she can go from being statuesque to being a wild child,.  She said she truly is a dancer, she thought she did a great job.

Len:  Clean, crisp, a great rhythm throughout; it could have been a bit more cheeky.

Bruno:  He said she is just natural sex, it just oozes from everywhere.  What he likes from her is achieving the standard she has, she should be proud of herself.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 9, Bruno – 9 | TOTAL: 27

3rd Dance – Salsa – Well, she has definitely got hip action all figured out!  The rest of it was just okay for me, and at one point she looked a bit confused.  I feel bad for her performing that after Mya had the same dance.  But not bad in any way.

Carrie Ann:  She said she generates heat, she loved it and thought it was excellent, she would love to see her in the finals.

Len:  He said it was hot, tasty and full of spice.

Bruno:  Delicious and flirtatious.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 9, Bruno – 9 | TOTAL: 27

Joanna & Derek’s Total:  Round 1: 27 + Round 2: 27 + Round 3: 27 = 81

Kelly & Louis

1st Dance – Rumba – She danced with so much more maturity than I thought I would see.  It was really quite touching.  Definitely not a raunchy Rumba, but I think the touching aspect made up for it.  I think she was so brave to do a solo in a Rumba too!  And I thought their ending position with her hip extended out while balanced on nothing but her other foot and Louis holding her lifted leg was amazing and really well done, even if it did take a few seconds longer than the end of the song to reach the final pose.  Not the best Rumba I have ever seen, and yet I loved it!

Carrie Ann:  She said she gets it, she brought her to tears.  She isn’t their strongest dancer, but she has a magical quality that reaches right into her heart and makes her love her.  Gorgeous, congratulations.

Len:  He said he can’t be as “airy fairy” as Carrie Ann.  He said he said it before and he will say it again she has turned into a very competent dancer and every dance she gets she dances well.  He does not think this was her best dance, but certainly not her worst.

Bruno:  He said she is very endearing but now it is the semi-final and he needs to point a few things out.  The Rumba needs to be erotic and she needs to push her hips to the extreme,  He commends her for trying some really hard figures and she did them well, but some things were not as perfect as they should have been,

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 8, Len - 8, Bruno – 8 | TOTAL: 24

2nd Dance – Quickstep – That was a really fast, non-stop Quickstep.  Overall, I think she handled it well.  If I had not looked at her feet I probably would say she did perfectly, but her footwork struggled a bit, especially on the final promenade they did across the floor.  And she almost caused herself to fall out of their final hold.  But she smiled throughout and it just felt so joyous, that I loved it!

Carrie Ann:  She cheered “Go Kelly Osbourne!”  She said she nailed it, she was right with him.  Yes, there was one stumble, fabulous.  (Kelly thanked them for all of their comments because that is what gave her the confidence to keep coming back.)

Len:  He said there’s two people he’s sure are really happy and that’s your mum and me, because that was totally beyond his expectations not only as a performer, as a dancer and as a person.  Well done.

Bruno:  He said she was going like Speedy Gonzales.  Light, fast-footed, she just lost one step, but overall absolutely right.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 9, Bruno – 9 | TOTAL: 27

3rd Dance – Cha Cha Cha – I thought it was kind of basic, and she seemed to miss a few beats.  But, I always love to watch the two of them dance together, it is always fun!  And her footwork was really good.

Carrie Ann:  She said Bruno is right, she was watching her hands and them and they were great.

Len:  He said that at the start of the season he thought she would struggle doing one dance and she has done 3 tonight, all to a very high level.  Well done.

Bruno:  He said it might have been a quickie, but it worked for him.  He said her feet and timing were great and she was finishing her moves with her arms.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 9, Bruno – 9 | TOTAL: 27

Kelly & Louis’s Total:  Round 1: 24 + Round 2: 27 + Round 3: 27 = 78

Mya & Dmitry

1st Dance – Waltz – There is not much to say, I thought it was really, really, really beautiful.  It made me cry a bit.  I do worry about listening to Carrie Ann’s critique as there was a prolonged bit of him twirling her while holding on to her arms towards the end where her foot may have left the floor, and there was a minor struggle with their final bit, but they are inconsequential in my opinion.

Carrie Ann:  She loved it too, but she has the potential to get 10s every time she comes out here and she felt they were slightly disconnected in hold.  She wanted them to know that if she makes the final she will be watching for that. (Whatever Carrie Ann)

Len:  He loved it.  It had romance, elegance, beautiful movement across the floor; they were in total control throughout the dance.  It was an absolute joy to watch.

Bruno:  Love set to music.  Flying high, defying gravity and he loves that they always put the touch of the exotic in it (not sure what he meant).

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 9, Bruno – 10 | TOTAL: 28

2nd Dance – Salsa – It was really good, though it got a slightly slow start, it built up.  I thought it was really high energy, her solo was fabulous, and they did some really cool tricks.  There was a slight fumble toward the end where they finished something too close together, but other than that…awesome!

Carrie Ann:  She said hot beyond belief, that solo was slamming and not only was she amazing, but it was totally difficult choreography and great rhythms.

Len:  He said he has to say “Tootie Fruity What a Booty.”  He was mesmerized by her buttocks he couldn’t stop looking at it.  He said tonight they are looking for who deserves to be in the finale and she should be there.

Bruno:  He said only one word can describe this...SEN-SA-TION-AL!

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 10, Len - 10, Bruno – 10 | TOTAL: 30

3rd Dance – Cha Cha Cha – I expected WOW, but didn’t get that.  I felt like they were a little out of sync, I think Carrie Ann will be calling them on a lift and they included some dance club type moves towards the end which would be okay in a longer piece but in a short one needed to be left out.  I was disappointed.

Carrie Ann:  She said she has great hip action and they threw some tricks in, but something about the beginning, it just wasn’t speaking to her.

Len:  He was disappointed…because he wanted it to go on a bit longer.

Bruno:  He said it was like an action packed trailer for a blockbuster and he wants to be first in line to see it.

Votes:  Carrie Ann - 9, Len - 10, Bruno – 10 | TOTAL: 29 (I think those were too high, I would have gone with an 8 myself.)

Mya & Dmitry’s Total:  Round 1: 28 + Round 2: 30 + Round 3: 29 = 97

Final Rankings:

1.  Mya & Dmitry (97)

2.  Joanna & Derek (81)

3.  Kelly & Louis (78)

4.  Donny & Kym (74)

I am thinking that the bottom 2 will be Kelly & Louis and Joanna & Derek, with Kelly & Louis going home.  I skipped Donny because I think he has such a huge fan base that people will vote for him, and I think he may even get more voters than usual because people will really feel for him and what happened with the first dance.  I really don’t want to see anyone go, and that is unusual for me, the last few season I have been more than ready for someone to be done at this point.

Tomorrow night the musical performers are The Bee Gees (yay!  But you didn’t hear me say that!), Alicia Keys & Leona Lewis.  Melissa Rycroft will also be back to perform with Tony Dovolani.

Next week Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice are having a dance-off AND Whitney Houston is performing!

I must say that I am pleased with last night's outcome, but I will be sad to not see what Derek would have done for Freestyle!

As for my dream team for next season...gonna have to think about that a bit! I am with you on a few of those though!!

I so agree about not wanting ANY of the final 4 to go this season! I'm so astonished by and proud of Kelly Osbourne for what she has achieved and the way she has grown into an elegant "lady" that it would be a shame for her to go, but you're probably correct that it will be her. If I'm being completely unbiased, I think Mya is the best dancer and I think she should win--I really love her, but I'm very impressed with all of them. And I think Derek is a genius choreographer!

And here's my ideal next season: Raquel Welch, Kelly Ripa, Jeff Goldblum, Scott Hamilton, Tyra Banks, Brad Garrett, Jesse L. Martin, Marylou Retton, Betty White or Doris Roberts, Omarosa, Li'l Romeo, basketball player Rick Fox and--just for laughs and to antagonize Sarah Palin--Levi Johnston! Now give me your "dream cast."
