Dancing with the Stars Fall 2011 Season 13 Cast is Revealed
The names of the contestants for the fall 2011 season 13 of Dancing with the Stars was just released this past Monday, August 29, 2011. I found out about it in an unusual way since I wasn’t really looking for it. I’ve been so wrapped up in the final weeks of America’s Got Talent that I hadn’t even given DWTS a moment of thought.
The way I found out about it happened two days ago when I noticed that the traffic on one of my Hubs suddenly increased by 1000% in a matter of hours. I was dumbfounded and wondered what in the world was going on. I thought it had to be a mistake and I started wondering if HubPages was going to accuse me of tampering with their statistics.
Then I noticed on my account page that there were a few new comments on that particular Hub. I thought maybe the comments might give me a clue about what was going on, so I quickly opened the article and read the new comments. The Hub is about wounded vet turned motivational speaker and soap opera star J. R. Martinez. A couple of the new comments said, “Kick butt on DWTS, J. R.!”
So that was it! J. R. Martinez was going to be one of the dancing contestants on the fall 2011 season of DWTS! I did some checking online to verify it and sure enough it was true! ABC had just announced the cast for the new show and now every DWTS fan in America had started googling J. R. Martinez (and, I assume, the other cast members as well).
So two days later (traffic still sizzling on that Hub) I figured that I might as well write a hub about the new cast since I couldn’t find any other Hubs that had been written about it yet.
In addition to learning the new cast members’ names, I also found out that the opening night for Season 13 was going to be on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 8 p.m EST (7 p.m. CST) and the first results show was going to be Tuesday, September 20 at the same time as the Monday show.
Though the celebrity cast was announced on Monday, the partner pairings were not announced until Wednesday on Good Morning America. The 12 new cast members and their professional partners in alphabetical order are:
Actor and wrestler David Arquette will be dancing with two-time DWTS champion Kym Johnson. This will be Kym’s tenth season with the show. David said he has always wanted to learn how to dance better because dancing is a way of expressing your soul.
L. A. Laker Ron Artest will be paired with Peta Murgatroyd. Ron, whose daughter Diamond was born with only one kidney and developed cancer when she was four, says he will be dancing for cancer awareness. Any profit he receives from the show will be donated to cancer charities. He said he initially had some reservations about being on the show because he felt dancing and leotards were too effeminate for a macho basketball player. This will be Peta’s first season as a pro-partner on the show though she previously danced with the special dance Troupe on the show.
Author and activist Chaz (formerly Chastity) Bono is teaming with Lacey Schwimmer , back on the show for the fifth time. Chaz is perhaps the most controversial member of the cast. He said he is proud to be the first transgender person on the show.
Italian model and actress Elisabetta Canalis is slated to dance with first timer Val Chmerkovskiy. Val is veteran DWTS dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s brother and Val and his regular dancing partner, Valeriya, are the current U S Amateur Latin Dance Champions. Elisabetta is best known in the U. S. for being George Clooney’s ex-girlfriend.
Reality show star and actress Kristin Cavallari will be dancing with Mark Ballas, winner of two mirror balls and back for his ninth season.
CNN Headline’s feisty news analyst Nancy Grace will be partnering with Tristan MacManus. When asked during a press conference if she would be as outspoken on the show as she was on CNN Headline News, she humbly suggested she would remain a lowly learner. Nancy will be balancing her intense routine with the demands of her high profile news show and her toddler twins. Her partner Tristan, like Peta, will be participating for the first time as a pro-partner after being a member of last season’s Troupe.
Reality TV star Robert Kardashian (Kim’s brother) will receive his instruction from Cheryl Burke, also a two-time winner of the mirror ball. Robert admitted in a press conference that he was nervous on the dance floor. He also said Kim had not given him any advice. Sister Kim appeared on DWTS in Season seven and danced with Mark Ballas.
Fashionista Carson Kressley will be partnered with pro-dancer Anna Trebunskaya who is back for her eighth season. DWTS executive producer Conrad Green reportedly stated that he considered pairing Kressley, who is admittedly gay, with a male partner.
Actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake gets to partner with three-time winner Derek Hough for his eighth season.
Real life war hero J. R. Martinez is teaming with Karina Smirnoff for her ninth season. Please read my hub about J. R.’s moving story here: http://booksgalore.hubpages.com/hub/Badly-injured-in-combat-J-R-Martinez-says-I-was-a-mess-but-now-Im-a-message

Entertainer Chynna Phillips, daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of Mamas and Papas fame, is privileged to dance with International Latin champ Tony Dovolani. Chynna said her mission on the show is to promote awareness for all the orphans of Tijuana, Mexico.
American soccer World Cup star Hope Solo is paired with Russian dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy back for his eleventh season. Word has it that Maksim actually pursued Solo to convince her to join the show and be his partner. He even went so far as to study videos of her soccer moves and became convinced of her footwork facility. The man must badly want to win for once after eleven seasons on the show.
Apparently, Ryan O’Neal was originally slated to join the cast but had not recovered sufficiently from recent knee replacement surgery.
The 12 contestants and their pro-partners will be working up a routine with either the cha cha cha or the Viennese Waltz for the Sept. 19 show. All the contestants have publicly stated that they have had no prior dance instruction which levels the playing field considerably. In previous seasons, celebrity dancers with prior dancing experience (Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing for example) were seen by many as having an unfair advantage.
The pair with the lowest score (judges and public votes combined) will be eliminated on the first results show the following day.
