'Dancing with the Stars' Returns After Taking One Season Off
The cast of Season 28 Dancing with the Stars was revealed on Good Morning America on Wednesday, August 21. The cast includes 12 contestants. Some of them are well-known celebrities. All of them will be better known by the end of the season depending on how many weeks they last on the show.
As usual, there are athletes, singers, actors, reality stars, and a politician. The producers reached far back to get some of the cast, but so far no one is complaining.
“Dancing with the Stars” premieres September 16, 2019 on ABC.
Lauren Alaina is a country music star. She was the runner-up on the 10th season of American Idol. Even though she was not the champion that season, the 24-year-old singer has already released two studio albums.
Supermodel Christie Brinkley is starring as Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago. The 65-year-old actress says her role on stage won't help her in the ballroom.
Ally Brooke was one of the five singers in the girl group Fifth Harmony before she left to go solo. The 26-year-old singer said she wanted to be on Dancing with the Stars to prove to others and herself that she can tackle this.
She has appeared in a few music videos, but she says her previous dance moves will not help her on the ballroom floor.
This is Hannah's Brown third consecutive reality show. She was a contestant on The Bachelor during Colton Underwood's season. She was a favorite, so she became the one passing out the roses on the last season of The Bachelorette. She became engaged to Jed Wyatt. Shortly after the engagement, she called it off after she discovered he already had a girlfriend.
The 24-year-old former bachelorette says she wants a fresh start, something she can go all-in with.
Karamo Brown stars in the Netflix series Queer Eye. He is the expert who gives life-changing advice. The 38-year-old self-help guru and life coach says he is the only one of the Fab Five on the show with rhythm.
Brown also said he is looking forward to the Dancing with the Stars wardrobe. He expressed that he wants sequins, the moves, and everything else that goes with being on the dance competition show.
Actress Kate Flannery is known for her role as Meredith Palmer in the long-running NBC series The Office. The 55-year-old actress has also had roles on the ABC show American Housewife and the Fox hit Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Flannery indicated she is looking forward to going in a different direction. She said, "So bring on the Spanx and the spray tan, whatever you got. Bring it on."
NFL Hall of Famer Ray Lewis is a former linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens who has earned two Super Bowl championships. On Good Morning America, the 44-year-old contestant showed off his dance "The Squirrel" to give viewers a taste of what they will see when Dancing with the Stars airs.
Critics might say the former football player has a slight advantage since he already has a dance named after him. After all, Alphonso Ribeiro was the winner of Season 19, and the Carlton is named after him.
In addition to Kel Mitchell being an actor and stand-up comedian, the 40-year-old is a musician with a rap career. Mitchell was a regular on the Nickelodeon sketch comedy series All That in the 1990s. Mitchell is best known for his character loving orange soda and being called a dance machine.
Lamar Odom is known for being an NBA player with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won championships in 2009 and 2010. The 39-year-old is also known for having been in a relationship with Khloe Kardashian. He experienced a near-death scare in 2015 after activities at a legal brothel.
Odom confessed that the most intimidating part of his new adventure is wearing the outfits because he doesn't know if he can do sparkles.
Dancing with the Stars has been courting Sean Spicer to get him on the show for the last two years. The 47-year-old contestant is a former White House Press Secretary and White House Communications Director under President Donald Trump. Spicer resigned from his position in July of 2017 after a very brief assignment.
Spicer knows what is in store for him. He shared that he was kicked out of his school band in the sixth grade. He confessed that in order to stay on the dance competition show for any time at all, he has to "work really, really, really hard every day."
James Van Der Beek
James Van Der Beek might do well on the reality show. He and his five children dance all the time at home. He has four daughters and one son who are 8 years old and younger. They were born two years apart in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
The 42-year-old actor is best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the hit series, Dawson's Creek and his role in Varsity Blues.
Mary Wilson wasn't in the studio when the others were announced. She communicated via video chat. The 75-year-old singer is the oldest one of the dancers. She rose to fame alongside Diana Ross with The Supremes.
Wilson is a mother of two children and a grandmother of 11. She said family members think it is really thrilling that she will be dancing this season. She tells them, "Hey, grandma is cool!"
Many of the fan-favorite professional dancers are returning. They include the following:
- Brandon Armstrong
- Lindsay Arnold
- Alan Bersten
- Cheryl Burke
- Witney Carson
- Valentin Chmerkovskiy
- Sasha Farber
- Jenna Johnson
- Keo Motsepe
- Peta Murgatroyd
- Gleb Savchenko
- Emma Slater
Two new dancers will be joining the show for the first time:
- Daniella Karagach
- Pasha Pashkov
In addition to the announcement of the cast, host Tom Bergeron announced there will be some changes to the upcoming reality show after taking a season off.
One obvious change is that the public will not know who the contestants will be partnered with until the first night of the season.
