The Legend

I first saw Honeyboy in 1997 at a small venue in Hamilton Oh. that seats about 300. He was the opening act and my friend John and I just sat there through the whole set blown away. Oh shit, this guy is the definition of the "Real Deal". We were told after the set that he'd be in the lobby signing copies of his CD's. After hanging around for quite a while it was obvious it wasn't happenin'. Oh well, back inside to see the headliner (neither of us had any idea how this guy was gonna' pull off that task). He took the stage and to his credit he said that Honeyboy was the real deal. True, I don't think he was even through the 2nd song when John and I looked at each other and having known each other for 30 years and having mostly the same taste in music just got up and walked out the door. Since then I've seen Honeyboy Edwards I think 4 times. Twice at the King Biscut Blues Festival in Helena Arkansas, once at the Chicago Blues Festival (see photos) and the last time was at a very small club in Northern Kentucky where I got to meet and have a drink with him. That's where I had him sign the copy of the photo from Chicago. He was also kind enough to sign several other items for me including a copy of his book "The World Don't Owe Me Nothin' ". I have a really special thing for this guy, he's seen and been through more bullshit in his life and still, at the age of 95 takes that hypnotic Delta mudbone blues on the road about 100 days a year. I keep checking to see if he's appearing anywhere reasonably close in hopes to get to see him one more time before one of us leaves this planet but if I don't I can at least know that I had the most humbling pleasure of getting to hear and meet a true blues legend Mr. David "Honeyboy" Edwards and I'm thankful for that. Give him a listen and enjoy the "REAL DEAL". Peace!! Tom                             http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Honeyboy_Edwards (if you'd like to read more)

Oh my goodness Tom I've never even heard of him. I wished that I'd heard about him sooner, so I could be on the lookout for his appearances. He's so good.

Hey 50, the damn videos are under the comments, my bad. I'm glad you had a chance to see him, I never got to see Lightning I bet that was killer too. It's a dying breed for sure. Willie is one of my all time favorites too. Couldn't believe he got busted for weed a few weeks back, WTF? You're always welcome man, I love doing this kind of stuff. (It keeps my angry side in check :D) Peace!! Tom

Damn Todd, the videos are under the comments but are not real good. If I'd known that I'd have done one myself instead of just shooting stills. Yeah, he don't need an opening act that's for damn sure. Tom

Damn, I'm thinking here that nobody has a video on a hubpages usable platform, or you'd have us one here.

Man, that would be some good motivation, really, to know you can blow your headliner out of the water. I know that's gotta be fun. . . .but you can't get nobody to tour with you! haha!

I think it was 1986 at the New Orleans blues festival I saw and heard him play, he was knockdown good, and there were a few like 2 more that just locked me up with amazement of their sound. I don't see any videos up there? am I blind or just dumb? hehe, the tinny sound he gets whith the finger slide and the first three strings up high on the neck of his guitar. It's like Willie and his nylon strings on his Martin G2, a "trade Mark sound" if you can't here the difference in voice you sure can tell it n guitar sound like his song "Working Man"

Great hub on sadly a dying breed that is probably one of the best experiences I ever had, seeing him and Lightning Hopkins play back to back and together on that trip.

What a trip back in time for me thanks 50
