Days of our Lives Who Dun It? Who Shot Stefano DiMera?

Updated on June 4, 2012

Days of our Lives Spoilers and Speculation

On a dark and stormy night in Salem, Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) enjoys a cigar, brandy and listening to opera at home in his mansion. But the weather isn’t all that is brewing in Salem One by one the citizens of Salem pushed to the limits by Stefano’s manipulations and blackmail arm themselves and confront Stefano. Some will simply threaten the crime boss, but at least one will pull the trigger. Who will it be?

Stefano will raise the ire of more than one Salemite over the coming weeks. And that is on top of what he’s already perpetrated to earn the hatred of many of the good citizens of Salem.

The following discussion includes both Days of our Lives spoilers and speculation. Some of it, or possible all of it, may not turn out to be true. But with half of the Days of our Lives cast threatening Stefano in one way or another over the coming week(s) it seems that the storyline is being set up for a whodunit centering on the shooting of Stefano DiMera.

Four separate storylines featuring the Phoenix appear to be converging on that stormy night with each of the protagonists having a clear motive for the shooting of Stefano.

Stefano Granted Immunity by the CIA

After almost killing, John (Drake Hogestyn) , Marlena (Deidre Hall), Hope (Kristian Alfonso), Bo (Peter Reckell) , Rafe (Galen Gering) and Carrie (Christie Clark) in the safe house bombing, Stefano was arrested on an arms smuggling charge only to have the charges dismissed by the CIA. That little bombshell turned those celebrating Stefano’s incarceration into an angry mob, especially when they realized Stefano was also granted immunity for recent crimes for assisting the CIA.

That alone gives John, Marlena and Bo motive for pulling the trigger on Stefano DiMera. One of the crimes Stefano would receive immunity for is setting up John Black in the embezzlement of pension funds from Basic Black. Never mind that Stefano was also responsible for clearing him. The funds still remain missing…

Add to that everything else that Stefano has done to this foursome over the years: brainwashing John to believe he was Roman Brady, brainwashing Hope into believing she was Princess Gina and many other crimes and it’s not surprising that Marlena has already shot Stefano once (his body was never found and he turned up again years later) and visited him in jail to put him into a drug induced coma.

Who do you think shoots/shot Stefano DiMera?

Stefano Blackmailed Will into Revealing to Rafe that Sami and EJ had Grief Sex

It turns out that poor Will Horton (Chandler Massey) has not only been blackmailed by EJ (James Scott), but also by Stefano – and over the same crime. Will was the one who shot EJ at his wedding to Sami, not Lucas (Bryan Datillo). Lucas covered for his son and went to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

EJ used Will during his Mayoral election but it turns out that Stefano blackmailed Will into letting Rafe know that EJ and Sami had grief sex.

EJ is furious with his “father” for this as it cost him his marriage to Nicole.

Will is no doubt more than a little peeved that he was blackmailed into doing precisely what he was trying to avoid – destroying the family his younger siblings enjoyed – something Will didn’t have growing up.

And Lucas has protected his son before, by taking the rap for a shooting he didn’t commit, so it’s feasible the believe Lucas could pick up a gun in his son’s defense.

A woman scorned

Poor Kate. On the same day she is served with divorce papers Stefano also has legal documents delivered that prevent her from working for Titan, thereby ruining her professional career.

The Phoenix couldn’t have thought this one through too clearly. Kate is surely much better off as his widow that Stefano’s ex-wife with no job.

Stefano is Responsible for Lexie’s Brain Tumor

Abe (James Reynolds) is about to lose his wife to a brain tumor. His son will be left without a mother and his father-in-law, Stefano DiMera is responsible for his wife’s condition. Pushed to the limits, Abe has it out with Stefano over the noxious gas in the tunnels where Andre DiMera (Stefano’s former right hand man) held Lexie prisoner years ago being the cause of Lexie’s inoperable brain tumor.

The DiMera’s pushed Abe into less than upstanding behavior in the recent Mayoral election so it’s easy to imagine Abe taking his grief out on the man he deems responsible for his wife’s impending death.

Unfortunately, Lexie (Renee Jones) overhears Stefano and Abe arguing and also learns that it was the time in the tunnels that caused her condition. Devastated and suffering a terminal brain tumor could Lexie’s reasoning be impaired enough to pull the trigger on her own father?

So Who Dun It? Who Shot Stefano?

It certainly looks like the set-up for a Who shot Stefano? Will Stefano live to tell the Salem gumshoe’s who done it? Or will the Phoenix die to rise another day? Time will tell…

@Love Days, Penna - hopefully things will improve given that episodes penned by Days' new writers start airing this week! You are certainly not the only Days fan who wants to see the"EJ is not a DiMera" storyline reversed...Maybe Eileen Davidson's return (Kristen Blake/ Susan Banks) will add a few new twists and turns to the tale of EJ's paternity....

I loved the fact that EJ and his Grandfather were doubles. So how can he now not be a DiMera. I am not watching it at this time because I can't stand to see EJ go to prison. The show will lose its rating fast. I will watch it in 2 weeks to see what happened. I hope he isn't going to be a Horton or a Brady. Leave him a DiMera. He plays that the best. There will never be another EJ. Can't wait until Stefano is back. The shows is a little boring right now. Spice it up...

@J...making Ian the shooter sure would be an easy out...and right now I thinks its what we are supposed to believe...

@D'autisme Divas, there are rumors floating around - totally unsubstantiated that Stefano mya be back for November sweeps....don't quote me though!

I honestly thought it was Ian who shot Stefano. Because of the facts that Kate was always gonna love Stefano! It would make perfect sense, since Ian is leaving the show!

@Megan, I like the Lexie did it option. It also means that Lexie chose good (Abe and her son) over evil (Stefano) breaking his DiMera hold over her once and for all....somehow though I suspect the real culprit hasn't been decided yet and hinges on whether Joe Mascolo is returning (even for a short time) or not....

I think Lexi did it. She knew he was the reason why she was leaving her son, and everyone else she loved. She knew that she would be gone soon, and would not be able to get in trouble for shooting him. I think she did it before her loved ones could so no one could go to jail.

@Aidan njara. I think Will has an alibi for the shooting - he was at a gay bar the night of the shooting. His alibi publilcly outted him. Sami is certainly capable of shooting Stefano - and Stefano blackmailing Will is the reason that Rafe learned that Sami and EJ slept together. So Stefano is responsible for Sami's marriage ending...which means she has more than one motive!

I think Sami or Will did it.Will wants his siblings to have a better upbringing than him and Sami wants the dimeras out of her kids' lives.so taking stefano out may be the only solution.

@Ronna Pennington - There's nothing like Stefano getting what's coming to him to bring viewers back to the fold. Hope you enjoy!

@Vcrazy, I think you are right. Stefano's role in Salem may become more as puppet master and we'll see him less on screen, but I don't think we've seen the last of Stefano (or Joe Mascolo). Joe's age (83) is what is causing speculation that the actor may wish to retire...but Frances Reid (Alice Horton) appeared into her 90's....

I really don't think he is dead. Watch some how they will bring him back.

@Kat, I agree the last option about Stefano working with the CIA to bring down the ISA (have they ever caught a bad guy either) was only partly tongue in cheek! I just hope that the culprit has already been decided. it would be nice if "clues" were planted for the viewers to work out like in a traditional whodunit!

Daytime Divas, I agree, Roman and his team, can't clean up the streets of Salem the Legal way, they always mess up, and the bad guys win....

However I think the CIA is involved, but don't know why yet...

@Jeani, I think you are right! Some past whodunits have also felt like the perpetrator wasn't decided until after the fact. Then there is always the inevitable re-writing of history. Who shot EJ for example. For years we all thought Lucas was the culprit, but it turns out (now) that it was Will!

there are so many suspected of shooting Stefano, I think it will turn out to be none of them. Too obvious, too easy. It will most likely become very complicated as the suspects are eliminated one by one. Personally, I think Stefano decided that he needed to go into hiding for a while, so he staged the murder somehow. (IMHO)

For a while I thought that Ian Buchanan was being brought in to be Salem's new villain once Joe Mascolo departed. But given that Ian is departing that obviously is not the intent of the new writers!

Stefano is the BEST part of the show. Once he leaves, the show gets boring. Big mistake if he goes. That's why we watch days. To see what Stefano is up to.

Joe Mascola as Stefano keeps the show alive with mystery and intrigue! every time in the past he left the ratings dropped when he returns they go right back up!

I have to admit having a love/hate relationship with Stefano. I love to hate him and cheer on the good guys to finally pin something on him. I know this can't happen because then Salem loses its best villain! Salem certainly is never the same when the Phoenix departs...

I LOVE Joe Mascola, if he leaves Days.... that"s when I leave! The show wouldn"t be the same without him! He has played the role of Stefano... remarkably over the years! He cannot be replaced! He brings all the excitement and drama to this show!
