Development of Hip Hop Beats in present generation.

Updated on January 21, 2016

Rap has developed throughout out the greater half of the last 50 years, involving hip hop, R&B, and rap. Throughout the last half century hip hop beats have been one of the most influencing factors in determining a rappers certain style or flow.

A Tribe Called Quest in the 90’s used heavily jazz bass driven hip hop beats to create a more big band booming rap flow. A Tribe Called Quest used their hip hop beats with prominent jazz bass lines to help provide a tribute to African American roots. A band coming up around the same time was the Jurassic 5, who had a more electronic high energy beats, producing a more in your face style and flow with their hip hop beats.

Hip hop beats have changed from the 90’s with new age rap in the 21st century. Hip hop started changing into rap around the time of the B.I.G., 2Pac, NaS era. The late great end of the 90’s rappers started sampling electronic pieces, jazz bits, and vocals on top of simplistic heavy bass lines. Further evolving the hip hop beats and how artists thought to approach the tracks they wanted to rap on.
The sampling and using simplistic bass beats helped further the flows of the gangster rappers that were using them.

Moving into the current state of rap and hip hop artists like Kendrick Lamar, especially with the recent release of To Pimp a Butterfly, started making tributes to artists of the past. Kendrick Lamar infuses his hip hop beats with the sty-lings of Michael Jackson and employing the help of super funk group Parliament Funkadelic. Kanye West has experimented with the way hip hop beats can be made, from where his career started, to know Yeezus. West started using more electronic artists such as Daft Punk to move forward by electronically distorting his hip hop beats.

Hip hop beats have greatly changed from where they started with MC’s who used to scratch the turn tables and have the rappers free style over them. Hip hop beats in the 2015 have become more electronically and classically influenced into a fusion that represents each distinct rappers flow and theme.
