Impact of digitisation and convergence on Television and Film

Digitisation and convergence are of great impact to the television and film industry whereby they make the conduct of television programs and composition and playing of the film more efficient. The history part of digital, which is through computer operations, is well identified through creation and consumption of information whereby transformation of input data takes place to enhance communication and presentation of media. Sound and light, as well as the representation space, are coded in graphical form, cultural form, Diagrams, moving images, and photographs. The numbers are identified as output through memory devices, online sources, and digital disks and can be decoded, and accessed in the form of hard copy, the telecommunications network, or screen displays. Information convergence makes every person an editor or a scholar. The convergence of television, as well as the internet media, is enhanced because of the current technological changes that improve the traditional boundaries of the music industry. This paper seeks to explore the manner at which digitisation and convergence have influenced the television and film. The paper refers to various publications about the impact of digitisation and convergence to television and film.

History of digitization and convergence

Digitisation refers to the conversion and changing of the analog information to digital signals over the Internet to a computer (Gray, 2008). Convergence is the technology process through which different elements of technologies are brought together in the same device. In 1923, the Australian radio station broadcasted to few homes where people owned a radiograph (Dhoest, & Simons, 2013). In 1946, the initial consumer television was released making TVs cheaper and affordable and by the 1960s around 95.5% of the American householders were hooked. In 1962, the initial video game was released “Spacewar” but due to the cost of the hardware used to play the video, only a few consumers accessed the video (Pardo, 2015). 1979 saw the emergence of digital animation studio known as Pixar, which began the digital animation of the film in the new era (Rani, 2013). The service offered by the music industry of peer-to-peer sharing of the files in 1999, and the industry’s value chain led to changing of the technologies from analog to digital. In 2000, illegal sharing of music over the internet was banned. In 2001, Apple established the iPod, which enhanced carrying of around 1,000 songs in one’s pocket, then iTunes store was invented (Goldsmith, & O’Regan, 2013). The digital music and information services began in the 2000s when the technology and digital communications companies started offering digital film services. In 2003, myspace was founded as a social media network enabling delivery of movies to homes and downloading of games over the internet (Simons, 2013). Gaming was enhanced through Facebook in 2007and digital radio began in 2009. Digitisation and convergence of media have progressed within five decades through the production of the press, going to the television, the radio, cinema, and audio invention.

Impact of digitisation and convergence on Television and Film

Digitisation has played a big part in the innovation era leading people to access efficient media (Moulton, 2014). Technologies such as tablet and Smartphone allow us to view and listen to TV, films, radio, and play games. They eliminated reliance on the ancient media and improved sharing and creation of personal entertainment (Bach, 2013). The convergent media also resulted in the creation of revenue opportunities. According to the argument put forth by Tryon (2009), in Hollywood, digitization has led to the democratization of the filmmaking and distribution of films, thus expansion of the filmmakers because of the discovery stories. The author continued saying that video sharing networks and YouTube provide a better opportunity to improve the talents of the aspiring filmmakers, for instance, the case of Fede Alvarez, which mixes excitement, fear, and horror (Ordanini, & Nunes, 2015). The distribution and production tools became affordable. The Internet buzz led to a reduction of the price of films and easier and fast spreading of news over the internet whereby TVs have websites where people watch and listen to programs. The marketing of the film of more enhanced because of digitisation (Evens, 2014).

Jenkins (2010) discovers different digital media and film scholars because of media developments resulting from the film production and digital technologies. Jenkins (2010) states that there is the artistic advancement of the computer games because of the emergence of the digital cinema and transmedia entertainment; whereby the digital technologies are used for creation, sale, and consumption of the films. The author adds that the film industry has developed much because of the emergence of the digital media (Mittell, 2010). The producers manage to make professional quality films because of application of digital technologies to compose, construct, and project movies. New platforms enhance viewing of films. Furthermore, the social media sites improve the studio marketing because they are faster, thus improved shape on how films are consumed (Latzer, 2013). There is declined sale of DVD because of the consumer behavior of selecting the movies to purchase and access to the streaming video. The use of digital projection enables the projectors to come up with valuable images. Jenkins (2010) elaborates that digital distribution through the social media tools makes the filmmakers more independent. Twitter and blogs help people share their views about films, thus strengthening the film culture because of their publications (Leminen, Huhtala, Rajahonka, & Westerlund, 2016). The online system also enables filmmakers to raise the required funds because viewers participate in making the films a success (Schatz, 2014). People especially the youth use the mobile devices such as iPods to watch movies; hence, the growth of TV and general media consumption since TVs allow online subscriptions and consumption of media through various platforms (Gracy, 2013). The online movies are housed in the valuable streaming versions. Jenkins also identify that the new tools and technologies enable the filmmakers to locate their audience through the social media networks (Evens, & Donders, 2016).

Mittell (2016) articulates that Tivo Set development has continually been changing because of effects of families having children whereby the DVR technology help in raising children. Parents appreciate the TiVo for the baby’s schedule, which is the favorite in the parental aspects (Leaver, 2008). The digitization of the DVRs enhanced increment of television consumption for usage in the households. Database editing also became easier because of its digitization and there is increased the exchange of the films over the internet (Pamment, 2015). The media convergence also enhanced the direction of the right audience to the right artist especially through the social media and the social media forums allow easier interaction between the audience and the filmmakers (Tompkins, 2014).

The internet among other improved technologies and media led to the improvement of the cable networks where the fiber optic cables offered great opportunities to the TV and film trading (Würfel, 2014). The convergence of TV and internet connections and development of the electronic industry enable people to watch different TV channels through their web pages. Tay and Turner (2010) postulate that video gaming is efficiently enhanced because of digitisation and convergence. There is increased demand for changes in the TV stations because customized navigation. The filmmakers do not have to incur high costs because of elimination of charges associated with video stores, cinemas, production of DVDs because of ability to sell their films in soft copies (Murray, & Johanson, 2015).

Conclusion

Digitisation and convergence have a great impact on the television and film. The manner at which news are produced and consumers is improved because of internet connections leading to the freshness of the digital databases. TV stations present breaking news online for public access. Digitisation has also simplified the production process of information and films since newsgathering does not need physical travel, but requires the taking of pictures using digital files. The digital videotape improves the standards of pictures. The digital television system is enhanced because of computer usage, which turns pictures and sound to smaller signals. People are also encouraged to purchase the digital apparatus, such as digital TV. The electronic cinematography is enhanced through the application of the digital cameras in making films, thus cost reduction and production of high-quality films. Digital imaging and convergence of media led to the improvement of image quality in films.
