Discover New Indie Music

Updated on August 29, 2016

Music has this wonderful and marvelous ability to completely take over your emotions. I have found that indie music, also sometimes known as alternative or contemporary, is always what I have the biggest emotional reaction to and it's the kind that I enjoy the most. Indie is a very broad term in the sense that it encapsulates many different sub-genres of music, there is not one set, defined sound, there is a wide variety of artists, and I believe that no matter what your music taste, you can always find a good indie artist. That being said, I've compiled a list of some of my favorite indie music artists with a description of their sound and a link to some music videos if you are interested in checking it out, and I highly recommend that you do so. I was in 6th grade when I first heard indie music, I remember it was a song by Grouplove, and I fell in love with the genre and have been since and I have lots of friends who experienced similar things. Music can really change a person's life.

I'm going to start off with an artist I've been kind of obsessed with. Claire Boucher, commonly known as "Grimes", has a very unique sound. Her music ranges from synth pop, art pop, dream pop, electronica, experimental, etc., It's different and it's sometimes strange to people, but I am a sucker for music that's considered "out there" and if you're looking for something new and different, Grimes is a great place to start. I have a very big obsession with her music videos which are usually a mash of nonsense with crazy colors and elaborate costumes.

Glass Animals

Glass Animals is huge in the alternative music world, especially now after they have released their new album, "How to be a Human Being" which I heard for the first time last night and I have probably listened to is about thirty times today, I am so in love with it. Glass Animals became big when they released "Gooey" which captivated a lot of people with this unique, smooth, crisp sound. Not only that but the music video that came along with it gathered a lot of attention as well. They are a synth pop band with hip-hop influences and I would honestly recommend them to anyone and everyone. They have a great sound.

Fleet Foxes

My all time favorite song, "Blue Spotted Tail" is by Fleet Foxes and they are a band that has captivated me since the 8th grade. "White Winter Hymnal" is the song they are most known for and while they have not released new music in a long time, they still remain timeless. They are and indie folk band and I imagine if you were to lie down in the middle of a forest for a while, these songs would begin to trickle in through you.

Declan McKenna

Declan McKenna is not entirely one of the most popular indie singers, as he only has six songs released, if I'm correct. He is a British singer with politically charged music and I discovered him on an indie music website (I will list some good ones at the end of the article) and totally fell in love. He exposes the corruption of FIFA in his song "Brazil" and topples issues in the transgender and LGBT+ community with "Paracetamol" and he is a singer that deserves a lot of love and recognition.

Young Dreams

Young Dreams is a Norwegian band, Spotify describes them as "atmospheric pop that balances '60s psychedelic guitar rock and contemporary electronic dance music." If that doesn't peak your interest, I don't know what will.

the 1975

The 1975 is a British indie band that is popular, especially with teenagers and young adults, who struggle with love, fear, sex, and violence, all topics portrayed in the lyrics of this band and they create beautiful, dark, and meaningful music that has impacted a lot of people. This is one of the very first indie bands I ever listened to and absolutely one of the most memorable.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend has a different and unique sound and are one of the most well-known indie bands out there, and for good reason. The afro-pop inspired band with joyful tones and upbeat choruses bring something entirely new to indie music.

I could go on and on with bands that are worthy listening to but my article would go on forever. Go out and discover new music yourself and be open minded! You never know what you might find. and are my two favorite sources for new indie music and are definitely worth checking out.
