High School Musical (2006)

Official Website of HSM

The story begins on New Year's Eve. Two kids on school break end up on stage together in a karaoke contest. Once back at school one, Troy, finds out that the other, Gabriella, just started going to his high school. Their new found friendship and love of singing turns their school upside down.

It's summer time and the gang's all working at Lava Springs Country Club, which happens to be owned by Sharpay & Ryan's parents. While everyone else is working in the kitchen, Sharpay is working to get Troy away from Gabriella. The club has an annual Midsummer Night's Talent Show, and Sharpay, once again, tries everything she can think of to keep the two of them from performing together.

Troy Bolton played by Zac Efron

Troy Bolton is the captain of East High's basketball team and the son of the coach. His family and friends expect him to be a star athlete, and that's what he is.

After being bitten by the performing bug while on winter break he wonders if he can do both. He's afraid to tell everyone and find out their reaction when he admits he likes to sing. When they found out they were not thrilled with his new hobby, or choice of girlfriend, and do their best to change his mind and keep basketball his number one priority.

High School Musical - And so it began

Vanessa Hudgens
Vanessa Hudgens

Gabriella Montez played by Vanessa Hudgens

Gabriella Montez is the new kid at East High. She's quiet and a top student used to doing well at school. Academics are her thing.

She met Troy while on winter break when they reluctantly ended up singing on stage together. Coincidentally, he attends her new school.

She wanted a fresh start at East High and didn't want people to find out how smart she really was. The cat got out of the bag and she was asked to join the school's scholastic decathlon team. She wanted to try out for the school's musical with Troy. Like Troy she wanted to be able to do both at the same time but her friends wanted her focus to be preparing for the upcoming scholastic competition.

High School Musical 2 - And so it continues

Ashley Tisdale
Ashley Tisdale

Sharpay Evans played by Ashley Tisdale

Sharpay Evans is co-president of East High's drama club. She fancies herself the most popular girl at school and since Troy is the most popular boy she thinks they should be a couple.

When Gabriella shows up in school already knowing Troy she feels threatened. Add in Gabriella being her main competition for the lead role in the winter musical and you have yourself some...well, drama. Sharpay is used to getting her way and will do whatever it takes for that to happen.

Lucas Grabeel
Lucas Grabeel

Ryan Evans played by Lucas Grabeel

Ryan Evans is Sharpay's twin brother and co-president of East High's drama club. The pair of them have starred in all of their school's productions and, like his sister, Ryan doesn't want to let anyone else take over the limelight. He also has a problem saying "no" to Sharpay and will pretty much do what she tells him.

Really there isn't much to the character, especially in the first movie. He sings, he dances, he acts, he's Sharpay's side kick...and he wears a lot of hats. ;)

High School Musical 3

Corbin Bleu
Corbin Bleu

Chad Danforth played by Corbin Bleu

Chad Danforth is the best friend and teammate of Troy Bolton. The pair have been like brothers since pre-school and are always there for each other.

Worried that Troy's involvement with Gabriella and trying out for the musical will hurt the team's chances of winning the championship game, Chad works to split them up. He later realizes that friendship is more important than winning and behind his friend 100%.

Monique Coleman
Monique Coleman

Taylor McKessie played by Monique Coleman

Taylor McKessie is Gabriella's best friend. She is captain of East High Scholastic Decathlon team and the one who convinced Gabriella to join. Taylor was happy to be in the smart clique and felt the jocks of the school were in a whole nother world.

When she found out Gabriella wanted to try out for the musical with Troy she plotted with Chad to foil their plan. She, like Chad, saw that it was hurting her friend and in the end she helps them through a stressful day of trying to be in three places at once.

Lovely job on this! I finally just watched the original. I was ... underwhelmed. I'd love to think it's building a new generation of musical theater lovers, but it reminded me more of the cheesy beach blanket movies that of great musicals like Wicked or Les Miz. (But what do I know. The Phantom of the Opera makes me gag. :-)
