Doctor Who 'The Tomb of the Cybermen' Review
'The Tomb of the Cybermen' is a four part story in the fifth season of the show 'Doctor Who'. All four of the episodes aired in the year of 1967. This story included the second incarnation of the Doctor. The second Doctor shows many personality traits which can be seen manifest in future versions of himself/herself as well.
The first episode is fantastic! There is still sound and footage intact. The humor is herein rare, but fantastic (I have no intentions to spoil this episode for anyone). The way in which it ended was pretty great too. The setup of the sets was great. Among the noticeable items of this episode is a controlled explosion! I definitely recommend watching this episode if possible, but I would state that about all of 'Doctor Who', innit? Regardless, 'The Tomb of the Cybermen' gets to a great start with the first episode.
You belong to us. You shall be like us.— 'Tomb of the Cybermen', Episode 2
The ending to this episode is much like the one for the first, and as with the prior case it is still terrifying! One very noticeable thing about the second episode is the soundtrack. I think that it goes very well with the overall story line at the point and time of said story that it is placed. Moreover, this model of the cybercreatures is interesting and bone chilling. The cybermen leader here is in the possession of a very scary appearance. He/she/it has what appears to be an encased brain visible through the top of the cyborg in glass( or perhaps other see-through material). For the ardent viewer, said viewer will note that such a design is persistent enough to make it into a much more recent colour episode of the series. I was also happy to see more interaction with the cybermat! Cybermats continue to appear in the show until as recently as 2013, but they had upgraded to a kind of cybermite!
Our lives are different to anybody else's. That's the exciting thing!— 'Tomb of the Cybermen', Episode 3
Episode 3 is of special note, because it is the origin of one of my all-time favorite 'Doctor Who' scenes. I have included it below. The entirety of the episode is good, however. I liked seeing the different kinds of cybermats. The black and white of the episodes in this story make the whole atmosphere that much more frightening. I very much enjoy how creepy the cybermen come off. Not just by their movements and their appearance, but their strange otherworldly voices. The humor between the Doctor and Jamie continues in this particular episode and I love it! The final scene leaves much suspense and was very well done in regards to a certain special effect. It is safe to state that the brutal violence that appears in more current episodes is not lacking in the initiation of the television series.
They're evil... They must be destroyed, you see. Evil must be destroyed.— 'Tomb of the Cybermen', Episode 4
I have noticed in the latter parts of this story line just how well the camera actions are performed. The timing is always great. Furthermore, the camera person is probably one of many of the under appreciated workers in the production of such shows. One item that I thoroughly enjoyed in this final episode is seeing a vulnerable cyberman. That's not to state that such a thing is unheard of, but somewhat rare for sure! I was filled with great emotion during moments of this episode, although again; no spoilers! The performances of the actors was outstanding and fantastic to watch. This was an incredible story.
We will survive. We will sur...— 'Tomb of the Cybermen', Episode 4
The episodes were all wonderful. I enjoyed the acting, the special effects, the story, the writing; everything! This is a fantastic example of a good cybermen story. I will be giving these four episodes together a rating of five stars.
