Yes we are. It is not a matter of if. It is only a matter of when. Let us count the ways...

List of Doomsday Events and Scenarios

The asteroid approaches... They are wandering all over the place out there. They have whacked us before and they will whack us again. In fact, we just recently had another near-miss.

Seems like those keep dropping by all the time. Sooner or later, one of them is going to decide to stay... They are not our friends.

As to the really big ones, they might as well be asteroids. Come to think of it, at what size does a meteor become an asteroid? Inquiring minds want to know.

Anti-Matter and/or Dark-Matter

This stuff is scattered everywhere. It does not get along well with regular matter. Sooner or later our solar system is going to wander into this stuff. Or it is going to wander into us. Either way, it will happen.

Galactic Collision

This one isn't scheduled for another three billion years or so.

The Sun

Those pesky solar storms, solar flares, solar winds, EMP's... Archaeologists say it won't be the first time. Actually, we were seriously clobbered once before back in1859. The EMP was strong enough to short out telegraph wires and do all sorts of other mischief. Imagine if the same EMP were to drop by today...

The Sun

Novas. This is another one that isn't scheduled for a few billion years. Then again, who knows?

The Earth

Climate change is just around the corner. The oceans are rising as we speak. Al Gore never lies.

The Earth

Super volcanoes have happened before and they will happen again. Aside from the immediate damage, welcome to the beginning of the next ice age.

The Earth

Volcano or not, the next regularly scheduled ice age is already overdue.

The Earth

The magnetic pole reversal could happen any day now. How all our electronic circuitry (which is attached to all sorts of interesting things...) will react is anybody's guess.

The Bomb

Nuclear war is still always on the table...

The Bomb

When the terrorists get a hold of it.

Genetics Research

Sooner or later, someone, somewhere, is going to mess up. Either the wrong stuff gets accidentally released into the environment. Or something "safe" is deliberately allowed; at which point it gets its own bright idea to mutate.

Genetics Research

When the terrorists get a hold of it.

If He ever decides to just give up on us...

Evolution hasn't stopped. And the next species is usually more advanced than the previous one. And it's a pretty good bet the first order of business for the new species will be to get rid of the old species.

And then there are those pesky new viruses that keep coming along...

Whether by accident or design, sooner or later artificial intelligence (AI) will come about. And if it has an attitude...

Most folks agree there are other lifeforms in the universe. It stands to reason some of them are as un-nice as we are.

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has not gone away. For those who have forgotten the year 2008 media news, the LHC is the new, worlds largest particle accelerator. It is still busily creating fermions, Higgs bosons, dark-matter, antimatter, quarks, leptons, strangelets, supersymmetry, vacuum bubbles, black holes, and who knows what might show up next...

Lab Rats

It is a well-known theory we are all just lab rats. Sooner or later the experimenter is going to clean out the cage...

Programmed Extinction

There is research indicating all species' genomes/DNA automatically lose their ability to replicate/reproduce over time. Sort of a naturally occurring kill-switch when nothing else comes along to do the job. This fits in nicely with the previous scenario. As a safety kill-switch, we are genetically programmed to die as individuals. And as a safety kill-switch, we are also genetically programmed to eventually lose the ability to reproduce as a species. As lab rats in an experiment, this kill-switch was incorporated in case the experiment somehow got out of hand. It is the same as what we attempt to do ourselves with virus and bacteria experiments.

Doomsday Events: Days 12/12/2012 and 12/21/2012

Well, we at least dodged these two... However, what with all the meteors, comets, and asteroids visiting us lately...

About the Doomsday Survey...

The first option for how the world will end would have been eliminated after December 2012, but altering the poll would have reset the count back to zero. And besides, it's an interesting historical reference. The number of votes have exceeded 1000 and counting... Looks like most of us are confident about things, excepting for the last category of course. What say you?

How the World Will End

Take the Survey!

When do you believe that life will end as we know it?

If you are not already sufficiently concerned, then there is always the top 10 ways entropy messes with us.

Have a nice day.

This was good...enjoyed it very much. But as for the survey....I would have to say life will end as I know it when I take my last breath...and until that happens I am going to live, live, live. Doomed, you say????

Good stuff. Coming from a soldier, these are pretty low on my "Doomed" list. Gotta admit though, i'd say someones guna press the big red button sooner or later and doom a substantial part of earth...ever the optomist!

What about a recent theory that reality could be just a virtual reality that is being projected from a place at the edge of what we consider the physical universe? I just love this stuff.

not too worried about computers as we have big magnets that make them dead/retarded. and I have a hard time trusting a dead civilization's predictions of armagheddin.

I love this its great stuff, but the likely hood of living long enough to see the ice age after a super volcano is slim at best we would die from lack of food and water long before the weather cooled enough to produce an ice age. :)

"When the terrorists get a hold of it" should replace "in bed" when reading fortune cookies in the year 2012.

If/when we live through 12/21 we can go back to our regularly scheduled silliness.

Good hub, para. I've got conspiracy theories on my mind today. This was the perfect antidote to gloom and doom.

I'm looking forward to getting back to 'regularly scheduled silliness'. I almost made a resolution not to read or view anything to do with ending the world in 2012-- but I was drawn in by the humor warning. This is one I wish I had written.

The lab rats one is definitely it (the reason I won't get a "smart phone"). It is too strange for me to buy something with "smart" in the name. So, I say it is Apple who is our top scientists. However, (without referring to the Bible on this one) I still say it's more likely someone who is going to take over the world.

One day I was reading the bible then I started calculating numbers and I came up with 12/31/35 and other was 30 thin I put thim together thin I realized it was a date I think god was telling me something cuz before tht happened some camertial came on about end of earth I really don't know how I came up with that date because I'm horibal at math cuz I'm in 10th grade and in 9th grade math and I'm already sapost to be out of school so it's 12/31/3035

Made me smile. Thanks, I needed to chuckle at a very serious topic, but you did miss a few things. You did mention our sun going supernova, but didn't mention near by stars going supernova or better yet hypernova. Or what about an earthquake on a neutron star? That would surely be the end of us.

I'm so glad for reading hub and i will share it. It's good to make the mickey out of all the doomsday predictions. We need to live in the moment and not get stuck in the phenomenon of time.

Oh no, just too much to think about. I only knew about six or seven of these possibilities before reading this.

      Had to peek. Interesting!

I know what your story is… You experienced the fall of Atlantis in a previous lifetime. It has happened so many times throughout history: Atlantis, Pompeii, The Flood, The Roman Empire, Dynasties in China that have come and gone for eons of time, the garden of Eden, Mesopotamia, etc.

      It could happen.

I actually had a very strong dramatic dream that a nuclear bomb was dropped in Colorado. I felt I was dying from the heat.
