Dorydrive is a relatively new and emerging contender in the raging sea of start up bands. The band is a merged group, consisting of mainly the former members of Milwaukee's Marashino with the addition of the gritty vocals of Echovalve's Mathieu Nevitt. Initially, the band was just an idea for a project that was hatched while Joey Zak and Mathieu Nevitt tossed around a football during some downtime during Echovalve's tour with Joan Red. After an informal get together the group instantly realized they had chemistry and started writing songs which have now come to fruition on their debut album, "Calling On Angles". The band has already made its presence felt touring with Hinder and performing at Milwaukee's Summerfest..
An impressive list of sponsors has also jumped on the dorydrive bandwagon including Greg Bennett Samick Guitars (providing all the electrical and acoustic guitars used by the band), Eruption Effervecsent Energy and apparel companies like Love Gone Apparel and eco-friendly Reuse Jeans. The band has been touring non-stop since their formation in 2010 and has been attracting the notice of media outlets like ABC News, Alternative Revolt Magazine, reverbnation.com, onmilwaukee.com and Radiobuzzd.com.. Now they have put out their first CD, "Calling On Angels" (recorded at Nashville'st Studio Red) and are releasing their first single from the album, "Tattooed" in late July.
"Calling On Angels" captures dorydrive's varied sound and stylings that have roots not only in rock/alternative but are also influenced by a slew of other musical genres, creating a sound ultimately unique to the band. Lead singer Mathieu Nevitt shows this variety along with his impressive vocal range on songs like their soon to be released single "Tattoed" to their catchy staples of "Falling For You" and "Better Part Of Me" to the harder edged (and incredibly horny) "Lite Me Up" all the way to some truly heartfelt ballads on "All The Same", "Heaven Falls From Angles" and "Your Gravity (Time Stands Still)". They even throw in a great cover of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana".
Aside from Mathieu's outstanding vocals, the strong guitar rhythms and backing vocals from Tom Labrosse and Henry Koller combined with the reverberating bass of Nick Mendini and steady beats of drummer Joey Zack glue this band together as a force to be reckoned with. The band is best seen live to truly get the heart and soul of what dorydrive is about but their album "Calling On Angles" manages to capture that live spirit. I highly recommend the album and trying to catch them live if you are lucky enough to get the chance. You won't be disappointed.
October 2013 Update: The band is currently working on their second album and they have been playing some of the new songs at their live shows. The new songs are awesome and I can't wait to hear when the release date will be. Hopefully, in time for Christmas otherwise I'd expect it to be available before Spring 2014.
