Down With Love DVD Review
An Homage to the Movies of My Childhood
This is a really cute and fun movie for folks like me who grew up with the Rock Hudson/Doris Day Romantic Comedies like Pillow Talk. The movie is very entertaining, and the presentation of the story as a movie set in the 1960s that looks as if it was made in the 1960s is quite unique and clever. This movie is very enjoyable from start to finish. The characters are charming and delightful. There is a bit of a surprise in the plot and a nice musical surprise in the credits.
Classic Merry Mayhem!
The story follows Barbara Novak, an enterprising gal, played by Renee Zellweger and Catcher Block, a womanizing playboy, played by Ewan McGregor. It takes place in a highly stylized version of New York in the 1960s. Barbara is the author of a book for women called Down With Love. The book advises women to approach love and sex as men do - without emotional entanglement - thereby allowing themselves to be more efficient and successful at work. Catcher Block is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist at a top men's magazine called Know, who sets his sights on proving that Miss Novak wants love and marriage just like every other woman. Merry mayhem ensues!
This Early Tony Randall Film Showcases His Talents

Tony Randall Revisits the Genre of His Youth
This is a fun movie that leaves you smiling. The performances are charming and sweet. It is nice to see Tony Randall in one of the last roles of his career, looking spry and wry as always! The style of the movie is just right. Reminescent of the romantic comedies of the 60s and overblown enough to poke fun at itself. Costumes are dazzling. David Hyde Pierce is hilarious and has one of the funniest lines in the movie. I honestly didn't know Ewan McGregor had it in him to play this kind of part, though I know more about his talents now. I might have chosen someone a little prettier than Rene Zellweger for the lead, but she was charming. The song and dance number that Zellweger and McGregor perform is quite good, but having been raised on the Dick Van Dyke show - I've seen better!
The Champs of Song & Dance!
Cute & Fun!
This is a cute movie that's a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it. Be sure to watch the Special Features for more about the lavish sets, wonderful costumes, and truly impressive music!
