Dusky Skinned Actresses of Bollywood

I recently wrote a Post on my Blog regarding the obsession for fair skin among Indian girls. Even Television and other media advertisements promote the Fair is beautiful and dark is ugly concept by exploiting the mentality of Indian society that one has to be fair skinned to be beautiful. Dark skin girls often face problems when it comes to marriage or jobs apart from the second grade treatment they often get from the society and their own homes. Dark skinned Indian girls thereby are under tremendous pressure to succumb to the fair and beautiful complex which may often lead to depression, inferiority complex, low esteem and mental disorders. But thankfully, not having a fair skin has not prevented many Indian girls from making a mark in the Modeling and Film World.

Beautiful Dusky Skin Actresses and Models

There are several earthy-complexioned or dusky skinned actresses who not only look divinely sexy and beautiful but also take pride of their complexion like Bipasha Basu, Kajol Devagon, Priyanka Chopra, Sameera Reddy, Lara Dutta, Diana Hayden, Raima Sen, Celina Jaitley, Konkona Sen, Tanushree Dutta, Koena Mitra, Freida Pinto, Nandita Das, Chitrangadha Singh and Jiah Khan to name a few. To quote Bollywood Actress Bipasha Basu who was voted sexiest woman of Asia for the year of 2005 and 2007, “In India, dark skinned girls are still subjected to taunts and pity. In the matrimonial columns, people still advertise for a fair bride. I’m dark skinned and very proud of that.” However, Asin and Deepika Padukone who are not naturally fair have no problem endorsing Fairness Products. The super hot and successful models like Nyonika Chatterjee , Mughda Godse, Monikangana Dutta and Laxmi Menon are not fair complexioned. Let us also not forget that many of the actresses mentioned above have even won beauty queen contests. Apart from Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra also has won the title of sexiest woman of Asia in 2006. However, there are a few actresses who have gone for fairness treatments like Rekha, Sridevi and Shilpa Shetty to name a few.

I think every color has its own individuality but the sensuality of the dusky skinned actresses mentioned above definitely is not there in the fair skinned ones. These Actresses also have made a successful career in the Film and modelling industry. Personally I feel that the dark skinned women should not feel inferior and should learn from the confidence and positivity these Bollywood Actresses. Women should be comfortable with their skin and stop running after fairness creams and treatments. Instead, one should concentrate on having a healthy skin without pimples and blemishes. Women should be happy and confident with their natural skin because the real beauty is what is within. As the popular saying goes, ‘If you feel that you are beautiful, you are’.

"I am so proud of my dusky look. I am so proud to have black eyes, black hair and a dusky skin. I am a tall voluptuous girl and I can never be thin" ~ Sameera Reddy

“I was never meant to be beautiful. I was a short, dark and round girl. Nobody thought I was pretty at all. Cruel jokes have been made about it. I think most people were surprised by the way I looked” ~ Bipasha Basu

"People had a lot of issues about the fact that I was dusky and not a conventional-looking heroine. But I still got the opportunities I did” ~ Priyanka Chopra

With such captivating beauty any of these ladies could turn any any red blooded male into a quivering wreck then to become her personal slave.

I regard Hindi ladies as tantamount to Deities who must be respected by all males, for their quiet dignity and radiant personna. It's true! The saree is a costume that accentuates her femininity whether the wearer be girl, mother or matron. Skin pigmentation is irrelevant as now there are laws preventing discrimination in this We have a saying beauty is only 'skin deep' meaning that it is the inner glow which counts.

It is the Chinese who have a saying in reference to Westerners, that is 'white ghosts' however even some orientals living in an equatorial climate are stained with a ruddy tan. My reason for contributing to this article is that in my humble opinion the Bollywood personalities here all have exotic persona, exquisite poise and a quiet dignity. Once garbed in saree the Hindi lady exudes a superiority that must be respected.

Fairness has nothing to do with being beautiful. Many fair skinned men and women can also be unattractive and many fair skinned men and women can be attractive and same with dusky skin as well many of the dusky skin men and women can be attractive and hot and many can be unattractive. Its features and a good body and personality that makes a man or a woman admirable or attractive not skin tone. I have dusky skin and was made to feel that i wasn't good enough as a child as i grew up in India i had developed an inferiority complex but when i moved to Australia I started to like the Indian brown skin because people here like brown skin and they have tanning salons here. You will actually be surprised to find out how many actresses in Bollywood are actually brown skinned. i hope bollywood stops painting their dusky skinned beauties lighter and gets audiences to accept them the way they are because they have beautiful features and a hot body....fair doesn't make a woman look beautiful, if a woman lacks features and a good body then fairness can do nothing. All the fair and lovely adds are misleading and rubbish.... Even Bollywood stars endorse skin-whitening creams – the film industry is very much part of the problem.. if Ashwarya was painted dark, then she would still be considered drop dead gorgeous, and she would have still won the worlds most beautiful woman title..fairness is given importance only in India because they have been taught as children that beauty means being fair. So they grow up associating beauty and sophistication with being fair. I feel sorry for people who cannot come out of that old backward mentality. If I Painted Ashwarya darker and painted myself fairer people would still find ashwarya beautiful...as for me looking fairer wouldn't enhance my beauty. So fairness is not beauty according to me. I prefer looking dusky, there is something beautiful about this skin tone.

I was born with yellowish greenish skin tone and I have black hair and hazel brown/light brown eyes. I am a light-skinned indian and I am appaled by what I am reading. The indian media disgusts me they hold dusky girls as undesirable. I doesn't stop at skin to eye color Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor with their fake blue and green contacts. Indians light and dark are beautiful. besides facial structure and body type should matter more

I'm a dark skinned. As a kid, I always had feel the pressure and wished I was born fair(lighter skin tone) but today as a working independent adult, I'm proud of my skin tone. As said what the point of having a fair skin with all skin problems.

Advertisements, are the major killer. The discrimination that they make towards dark skin is harsh. Not to forget, Draupathi is a legend of history, she was dark and the prettiest of the era. I'm in UK and here guys don't care what skin colour you are. So advertisement should stop portraying that ONLY if u're fair skin, you get a husband/boyfriend.

The Indian media and tele-cine world promotes only white skin girls . There is substantial percentage people who adore and admire black -brown skinned beauties. I believe dark -brown skinned girls should be promoted in modelling , tv & cine films . Black is beautiful.

hey!! so true great article !! I don't know if many people know this but Caucasians (white skinned people) love brown skin, that's why tan parlours are doing so well. The irony is that these people lie on the beaches for hours all day long to get a tan (which is considered sexy)and all they become is red!!! ;) so come on indians be proud of your colour !!

As I'm sure you know, Indian girls aren't the only ones who deal with this annoying bias. Fortunately though, I see the tables turning, a bit, and admiration for the "perma~tan" increasing.

    One of my favorite sayings that I once heard in regards to this subject matter was, "The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice." >;}

Shalini Kagal : That is very true. But when would the society change their obsession for fair skin end? After all, dark skinned girls still face problems in marriage and jobs.

msorensson : Yes, these girls are beautiful.

    sabreblade: I think so too.
