Dylan Carlson Solo Album

Updated on February 13, 2012

Like many people, I first encountered the music of Dylan Carlson by looking for obscure Kurt Cobain tracks such as ‘Divine and Bright’ by Earth. Further reading revealed that the two were close friends (and drug buddies). As I really liked that particular track, I researched more and found a wide range of music coming from the talents of Dylan Carlson.

Earth’s early work (and at this stage, they consisted of mainly Dylan and Slim Moon) has often been described as ‘Drone’ or ‘Drone doom’, and can probably be best described to someone who hasn’t heard it, as extremely slowed down Black Sabbath with just a hint of Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music!

After several albums however, Dylan Carlson vanished from the music world, taking a 7 year break to sort out his health and drug problems. His next releases showed a lighter side to his music, although with the drone element definitely still there, and his last 2 albums Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I and Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II received great acclaim. Still slowed down, there are strong hints of Americana there and have been described as sounds to accompany a lone trip through a desert at night.

Which brings me to the whole point of this hub. Although Dylan’s music may not be to everyone’s taste, he is undoubtedly a talented artist, and as such, is certainly not wealthy. His next project is to be a solo album, the description of which, I have to admit, sounds not to my taste. The following is a sample description:

“These recordings will be layered with Dylan's interpretations of classic Scotch-English ballads about human/fairy encounters from early modern England and Scotland(15th-18th century). It will also feature guest vocalists to sing the songs.”

Now, I have to admit that I personally dislike the sound of this, however, Dylan has said his last 2 albums were influenced by English Folk music and I don’t really pick any of that up, so I’m working on the basis of trust, that this will be an excellent, or at least very interesting album.

Help Fund Dylan Carlson's Solo Album - Ends Sunday 12th Feb Feb

However, in order to raise funds to create this ambitious project which involves much more, Dylan is trying to raise $30,000 through a ‘Kickstarter’ project.

With only ten days to go, as I write, he is a third of the way there, so if anyone has a few dollars (min of $10 I think) and would like a credit on his new album, then visit his kickstarter project page and help him along.

What a wonderfully generous Hub -- anything to help musicians is high on my list. Although I'm not familiar with Dylan's work he sounds tremendously interesting -- will be watching for follow-up. Blessings all the way! Best, Sis
