Nacho Libre the Movie

Updated on February 10, 2013

Héctor Jiménez and Jack Black in Nacho Libre

I just love funny movies and this would be one of those movies. I did not think from the previews that I would like this movie because I do not like slap stick humor or what I would like to call stupid humor. I personally think it insults our intelligence. This movie kept my interest and attention throughout. I can't think of one part that I didn't care for. It still does after watching it for the 100th time since I have purchased the DVD. I would recommend this as a good family movie for all. My kids have watched this movie as much as I have and still laugh their way through it. (MAYBE A LITTLE MORE THAN ME BUT STILL LOVE IT JUST THE SAME:))

My family and me adored the movie!

My review is in the intro. Loved it! It's a great famiIy movie and gets funnier the more you see it. I can't help but to laugh out loud when watching it. Jack Black played an excellent part as always! And of coarse his side kick couldn't have been any more perfect. He was the perfect person to partner with Jack Black.

Nacho Libre

If you buy the movie like I did you can watch it over and over again and catch all the things you had missed the first time you watched it. Get it to give the gift of laughter to a friend!

Did you know????

Simple facts about the movie cast

* During some of the wrestling scenes they used blow up dolls to replace some of the audience. Supposedly, they cost much less than extras and they looked real.

* "Chancho" is a Spanish word for "pig".

* Esqueleto is a Spanish word for "skeleton".

* While filming a wrestling scene, Jack Black jumped from the ring and struck his head on a chair. This caused a gash above his right eye which needed stitches.

* The little wrestling toy seen in the bus scene near the end is a miniature Nacho and was seen in Jared Hess's other film Napoleon Dynamite (2004). It is the toy that Napoleon ties a string to and throws out the window of the bus.

* The action figure at the beginning of the movie before we see the young Nacho playing outside the monastery is Nightcrawler, a mutant from the X-men comic. Nightcrawler was also a monk in a monastery and is, like Nacho, a character not entirely fit for his environment.

* The film was partly inspired by Fray Tormenta ("Friar Storm"), aka Rev. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez - a Mexican priest who became a wrestler to raise money for his parish.

Funny Tidbits

* Continuity: When Nacho and Sister are sitting on the bed eating toast, the toast in Nacho's hands changes continually.

* Revealing mistakes: Obvious (slender) stunt double during some of the wrestling matches.

* Revealing mistakes: Obvious stunt double during man on fire sequence.

* Continuity: When Nacho and Esqueleto are given their payment after their first match, Nacho's mask is askew. In the next cut, it's perfectly put on.

* Continuity: When Nacho throws the chips into Sister Encarnación's salad, the chips are visible on top of the salad. In the next shot, there are no chips on the salad.

* Continuity: When Silencio throws El Chino and Esqueleto during the battle royal, El Chino lands inside the ring, in the next shot, he's no longer in the ring.

* Continuity: Nacho knocks the corn out of Esqueleto's hand onto the ground, but in the next shot it is gone.

* Continuity: When Ignacio and Esqueleto are at the party, Esqueleto is eating corn on the cob. When Candidia approaches Esqueleto by the case full of dolls, the corn is gone, and then later reappears.

* Anachronisms: The plot takes place in early '70s. In one of the first cuts, when Nacho is a kid (some 20 years before the main plot), he pulls off a cloth from above a color TV. Color television started in Mexico in late '60s.

* Continuity: After Nacho puts salad dressing on Sister Encarnación salad and it cuts back and forth from their perspectives, in one scene the salad dressing is gone.

* Revealing mistakes: When "Chancho" and the orphans first start watching Nacho on television they are wearing their day clothes. After the shot of "Chancho" covering the TV, the orphans are all wearing their pajamas i.e white tank tops.

* Continuity: The gruel that Nacho spills outside the bowl changes shape between scenes.

* Continuity: When Nacho is singing at Ramses' party, Ramses throws a glass of wine on Nacho's shirt. Nacho then immediately rushes to the aid of Esqueleto and his shirt does not have the wine on it. But in the next scene outside the party, the wine stain is back.

Continued to more of the funny stuff!

* Continuity: When Nacho's habit catches fire in church, the leggings on his costume are obviously blackened with soot as he rolls on the grass outside the church. When he stands up, the leggings are only slightly soiled. Also, he is wearing his Lucha Libre red boots and not the white boots he had been wearing right before the fire.

* Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Under lucha libre rules, once a luchador is on the ropes, his opponent must release any holds. In Nacho's first match, he does not let go of his opponent's legs after he grabs the ropes.

* Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Near the end of Nacho's first match, El Semental enters the ring without being tagged in by his partner, which should have disqualified the team.

* Continuity: Nacho pulls the lining of Ramses's leggings over his head. After Ramses pulls the lining off his head, the next shot shows the lining in a bunch on his back. In the next shot, the lining is gone.

* Continuity: The positions of Ramses's left hand and forearm as Nacho attempts to pin him.

* Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Nacho makes the Sign of the Cross a couple of times during the movie. However, when he does it just before he "baptizes" Esqueleto, he uses his left hand, when he should have used his right hand.

* Revealing mistakes: During the fight sequence between Ramses and Nacho towards the end of the movie, Nacho is knocked down and Ramses pulls him back up by his hair. Ramses then punches him once or twice, and then goes to knee him in the face. When he does this, you can see that Ramses knee never makes contact with Nacho's. It is actually several inches away.

* Audio/visual unsynchronized: When sister is reading the letter delivered by Esquelto, we hear Nacho's voice. When she gets to the second page, the words on the page do not match up with what is being said.

* Revealing mistakes: When Nacho goes to the sisters house she says it's late. However, when they are eating toast you can see sunlight outside and can tell it's around the afternoon.

* Continuity: In the opening when they show young Nacho gathering items to make his first cape, the hand/fingers that reaches up to grab the rosary beads is thin and then when it shows him assembling the cape the hand/fingers are chubby.

QUOTES

Memorable Moments

Nacho: I was wondering if you would like to join me in my quarters this night... for some toast.

Nacho: Chancho. When you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. It's for fun.

Nacho: Don't you want a little taste of the glory? See what it tastes like?

Esqueleto: NO!

Esqueleto: I don't believe in God, I believe in science.

Nacho: They think I do not know a buttload of crap about the Gospel, but I do!

Sister Encarnación: Well, my favorite color is light tan. My favourite animal is puppies. I like serving the lord. Hiking, play volleyball...

Nacho: You gotta be kidding me. Everything you just said, is MY favourite thing to do, every day!

Sister Encarnación: Wrestling is ungodly Ignacio. People cheer for him... and he is a false idol.

Nacho: Whatever.

Señor Ramon: What is this?

Nacho: Leftovers. Enjoy.

Señor Ramon: There is no flavor. There are no spices. Where are the chips?

Nacho: Somebody stole them.

Señor Ramon: Did you not tell them that they were the Lord's chips?

Nacho: I was trying to!

Señor Ramon: You are useless Ignacio!

Elderly Monk: Silence brothers! This is the worst lunch I ever had.

Señor Ramon: Your only job is to cook. Do you not realize I have had diarrhea since Easters?

Nacho: Ok... Maybe I am not meant for these duties. Cooking duty. Dead guy duty. Maybe it's time for me to get a better duty!

Nacho: I'm a little concerned right now. About... your salvation and stuff. How come you have not been baptized?

Esqueleto: Because I never got around to it ok? I dunno why you always have to be judging me because I only believe in science.

Nacho: Where is he?

Nacho: Ok. Orphans! Listen to Ignacio. I know it is fun to wrestle. A nice piledrive to the face... or a punch to the face... but you cannot do it.

Because, it is in the Bible not to wrestle your neighbour.

Chancho: So you've never wrestled?

Nacho: Me? No. Come on. Don't be crazy. I know the wrestlers get all the fancy ladies, and the clothes, and the fancy creams and lotions. But my life is good! Really good! I get to wake up every morning, at 5AM, and make some soup! It's the best. I love it. I get to lay in a bed, all by myself, all of my life! That's fantastic! Go. Go away! Read some books!

Nacho: My life is good. Real good.

Esqueleto: Summon your eagle powers.

Nacho: What do you think I'm doing?

Nacho: [Losing badly, about to take a big hit] Eagle powers... come to me! Please!

Esqueleto: Surpise.

[holding corn in both hands]

Nacho: Get that corn outta my face!

(the accent is what makes these so darn funny!)

Nacho on Quest

Even more quotes!

Try to imagine a Spanish accent as you read these....

(picture from when they tried out the Eagle Powers in the ring)

Nacho: Those eggs were a lie, Esqueleto. A LIE! They give me no eagle powers! The give me no nutrients!

Esqueleto: Sorry.

Nacho: When the fantasy has ended/and all the children are go/ I feel that something inside me/comes to carry on/I ate some bugs/I ate some grass/I use my hands/To wipe my tears/To kiss your mouth/I break my vows/No, no, no, no, no, no way jose/And if you want to/we can break our vows together/

Juan Pablo: How come we can't ever have just like a salad?

Nacho: Be grateful, Juan Pablo, today is especially delicious.

[takes a bite of the beans and chokes, it comes out of his nose]

Nacho: I'm not listening to you. You're crazy.

Nacho: I don't want to get paid to lose. I wanna win!

Nacho: I am a-singing at the party / I am singing it's my turn to sing at this party / Everyone is dancing, happy party / But Ramses is not dancing he does not dance at the parties / Ramses' number one he knows the secret of desire / Ramses is the one, he puts the people all on fire

Nacho: It sucks to be me right now!

Esqueleto: How come?

Nacho: How come you think? I used to really like Ramses. I wanted to become him! But it turns out, he's a real douche.

Nacho: I'm not listening to you! You only believe in Science. That's probably why we never win!

Esqueleto: We never win because you are fat!

Chancho: Nacho! Where are you going?

Nacho: There is no place for me in this world. I don't belong out there, and I don't belong in here. So I'm going out into the Wilderness. Probably, to die.

Chancho: Well, you might need this

[Gives Nacho a machete]

Chancho: My mother gave it to me before she died. It was her lucky machete. You can have it.

Nacho: I hope to see you again little Chancho. Maybe in the next life.

[Departs]

Nacho: Precious Father, why have you given me this desire to wrestle and then made me such a stinky warrior?

Sister Encarnación: Where are your robes, Ignacio?

Nacho: They were... stinky. These are my recreational clothes.

Sister Encarnación: They look expensive.

Nacho: Thank you. I mean... they might have the appearance of riches, but beneath the clothes, we find a man... and beneath the man we find... his... nucleus.

Sister Encarnación: Nucleus?

Nacho: See that guy over there? That is Senior Ramon, he owns all the big arenas. We need to show him that we mean business. That we are ready for the 'big leagues'.

Nacho: Do you remember when everyone was shouting my name, and I used my strength to rip my blouse.

Esqueleto: Yea, and I saw them knock you unconscious, ok?

Nacho: [singing] I ate some bugs, I ate some grass, I used my hand, to wipe my tears.

Nacho: Hey, let go my blouse.

Esqueleto: I hate orphans!

Nacho: Say it to my face!

Esqueleto: I hate them!

Nacho: Come again?

Esqueleto: I hate all the orphans in the WHOLE WORLD!

Nacho: Have you ever have you ever had feelings for a nun?

Nacho: Your hands! They are greasy!

Nacho: [signing letter to Sister Encarnacion] Hug hug, kiss kiss, hug hug, big kiss, little hug, kiss kiss, little kiss.

Nacho: Chancho! I need to borrow some sweats.

Chancho: Are you leaving us?

Nacho: No, Chancho, I would never leave you. I just need to borrow some sweats.

Esqueleto: How did you get up here so fast?

Candidia: Shh, shh, shhhh... secret tunnels

Nacho: Those guys were a couple of wussies, eh?

Esqueleto: They scalped my hairs, okay? I look hideous. And you gave them permission to hurt me like this.

Nacho: But I couldn't have anybody see my face, Steven. Come on!

About Jack Black

Thomas John "Jack" Black (born August 28, 1969) is an American actor, comedian, and musician. With his friend Kyle Gass, he makes up one half of the comedy and heavy metal music duo Tenacious D. The group has two albums and a full-length film. His acting career is extensive, starring primarily as bumbling, cocky, but internally self-conscious outsiders in comedy films. He is a member of the Frat Pack, a group of comedians who have appeared together in several Hollywood films, and has been nominated for a Golden Globe award.

Acting career

Black's acting career began with prime time TV. He played roles on several shows such as: The Golden Palace (Taxi Driver), Life Goes On (skinhead), Northern Exposure (Kevin Wilkins, prom king), HBO's Mr. Show, and Picket Fences (Curtis Williams). In a Season 3 episode of The X-Files, titled "D.P.O.", Black played Bart 'Zero' Liquori, friend to Darren, a teen who could cause lightning strikes, played by Giovanni Ribisi. Black appeared in an un-aired pilot episode for a show directed by Ben Stiller called Heat Vision and Jack where he played an ex-astronaut pursued by actor Ron Silver. He was accompanied by his friend who had merged with a motorcycle, voiced by Owen Wilson.

Black later took on small roles in Airborne, Demolition Man, Waterworld, The Fan, The Never-ending Story 3, The Cable Guy, Bob Roberts, Mars Attacks!, The Jackal, Bye Bye Love, Jesus' Son, Dead Man Walking, Saving Silverman, Enemy of the State, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. In High Fidelity, he was cast in the role of Barry, the pretentious co-worker to John Cusack's record store owner, which garnered him more exposure.

His career soon led to leading roles in films such as Shallow Hal, Orange County, School of Rock, Envy, Be Kind Rewind, King Kong, Kung Fu Panda, and Tropic Thunder. Black starred in two films in 2006: Nacho Libre, in which he played a Mexican friar following his childhood dream of wrestling and pursuing true victory by fighting for the children of an orphanage, and Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny, a fictionalized account of the band's formation and their quest to obtain a "supernatural" guitar pick. Nacho Libre opened on June 16, 2006; Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny was released November 22, 2006.

He starred alongside Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Winslet in The Holiday, in which he played Miles, the love interest of Winslet's character. In 2007 Black starred in Margot at the Wedding, opposite Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nicole Kidman, released November 16, 2007.

He also guest-starred on The Office along with Cloris Leachman and Jessica Alba in a movie within the show.

Jack Black has appeared numerous times on the "untelevised TV network" short film festival Channel101, starring in the shows Computerman, Timebelt, and Laserfart. He also provided an introduction for the un-aired sketch comedy, Awesometown, donning a Colonial-era military uniform. In the introduction, he claims to be George Washington (and takes credit for the accomplishments of other American Presidents such as Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln), and gives viewers a general idea as to what they should expect from the show. Black has also guest starred in the Adult Swim show Tom Goes to the Mayor as a bear trap store owner.

Black hosted the 2006 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards on April 1, 2006 and hosted it again on March 29, 2008. He also appeared on the MTV video music awards on August 31, 2006. He is also a member of the Frat Pack, which also includes Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, and Steve Carell. Jack Black has made five appearances on Saturday Night Live: three times as a host, once as a musical guest (with Kyle Gass as Tenacious D), and another appearance with Tenacious D, not as a host or musical guest. He appeared on VH1's Internet video show Acceptable.TV.

Black has also voice acted for The Simpsons episode "Husbands and Knives", voicing the friendly owner of the rival comic book store, Milo. He will be voicing the main character, roadie Eddie Riggs, in the upcoming rock-themed action-adventure video game, Brütal Legend. Black also appeared in a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire celebrity edition along with Denis Leary, Jimmy Kimmel and others and walked away with US$125,000.

In 2008 he appeared in three films. Black starred alongside Mos Def in the film Be Kind Rewind, which was written and directed by Michel Gondry. He voiced the main character, Po, in the 2008 film Kung Fu Panda to high critical praise. Finally, he appeared as Jeff 'Fats' Portnoy in Tropic Thunder. On the 14th of December, Jack Black hosted the Spike TV VGA Awards 2008.
