Eleven Songs That Contain Twenty of Something

Updated on January 7, 2020

Charlie Daniels Once Thought Twenty Would Get Him Out Of Trouble

If you add the two twenties that define the new year, even the most mathematically -challenged of us would get forty. Be it through a nap or Biblical rains or a proverbial pole, the number forty makes for a nice sum.

It even opens the biggest hit for the classic rock band Grand Funk, as the title track for their album We're An American Band. "Out on the road for forty days" drummer Don Brewer says. "Last night in Little Rock out me in a haze. "

We do not, however, have to wait two decades to find the number of a year somewhere with in a song. In fact, quite a few tunes include the number twenty somewhere in the lyrics, and here are eleven of the most well-known. The reference must not go beyond twenty, therefore omitting selections such as "25 or Six to Four" by Chicago or Paul Simon mentioning his age of 22 in the hit "Leaves That Are Green."

1. Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
One of the greatest albums of all time open a with the line, " It was twenty years ago today Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play. "

2. Twentieth Century Man by the Kinks
Muswell Hillbillies is the underappreciated album that serves as home for this, its first single.

3. Uneasy Rider by the Charlie Daniels Band
In an effort to get out of the Do Drop Inn without suffering bodily harm, the peace-loving long-haired hippy "threw the man a twenty and jumped in and fired that Bug up."

4. Twentieth Century Boy by T. Rex
Somehow the song failed to be placed on an album, so it was later included as a bonus track on Tanx.

5. Thrift Shop by Macklemore
Just a few years ago this title was the hit of the summer, when everyone heard about the twenty bucks in the pocket.

6. Twenty Years and Two Husbands Ago by Lee Ann Womack
For those intrigued by math, the country star averaged one husband every ten years.

7. Sugar Mountain by Neil Young
"You can be twenty on" this fictional hill, which allowed fans to admire the strong acoustic side of the rocker.

8. Twenty Years Ago by Kenny Rogers
Even though it all adds up to the same span, somehow "two decades ago" does not have the same musical tone.

9. Twenty Years From Now by Bob Seger
Instead of looking back a score of years, the Detroit rocker takes a glimpse into the future on this single from the Seven album.

10. Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan
"Twenty years of schooling and they put you on the day shift," the rock poet snarls on this track from Bringing It All Back Home.

11. Twenty Flight Rock by Jeff Beck
Known more for his collaborations with guys named Clapton and Page and Stewart, the Sixties guitarist managed to release some very good solo work like this song.
