Eloy - Best ever German Band

Updated on July 6, 2015

ELOY

It's a shame when old bands disappear.

But for some, they will live for evermore.

One thing I do know, I did not see or go to Woodstock in 1969.

If I had a time machine, I'd go back and be a happy hippy.

Eloy would have done well then and there, but they never made big in USA.

But they would need a time machine as well, they started up in the mid 70's

As it turned out, in 1969 I was in a four wheel drive Monster truck, crossing the Australian outback and heading for Germany.

It was while I was living in Germany I found out about this band. Eloy.

I went to as many of their concerts as I afford as a student, and followed their progress for a couple of years.

So here is my lens about one of my favorite German Bands.

Enjoy

About Eloy

Although I claim Eloy to be the BEST EVER GERMAN ROCK BAND, I'm sure many will disagree.

But those of us that have seen them perform live on stage, will agree with me, they were very good.

The bands name " Eloy " is from the book The Time Machine by H.G Wells, and refers to the race of people living in the future.

ELOY was formed in 1969 in Germany by Frank Bornemann.

Frank learned to play with four fingers, most modern guitarists only play with three. He learn t guitar playing jazz and music by the another one my favorite bands, the Shadows.

Although they might have been inspired by the works of THE BEATLES,

they soon became a band heavily involved in the progressive rock scene.

If you like Pink Floyd, you should like Eloy.

They started off as a hard rock band with a political bent, but drifted into a spacier LSD type rock sound.

The band members changed a lot in the first year, and a major split in the 1980s, which resulted in a move more towards mainstream music and mainly based on Frank's guitar solos, their music evolved to include more synthesizers and choirs.

I think their best period is the mid to late-70's with the "spaced out" space-rock of "Inside" and "Floating" .

But "Dawn" is one of the better of the symphonic-era ELOY albums, perhaps even the best. "Ocean" is a concept album about Atlantis, and one of the pillar albums of the German symphonic scene, and certainly worth checking out. "Ocean 2" was released in 1998, and was their last album.

And sadly the end of a great band. It's a pity they never broke into the U.S.A market, perhaps they would have made more albums, and been around today.

Never heard of the band, but I like it. I use to listen to Pink Floyd. I think the guitar video is great.

@smine27: Good morning smine27. The band is not well known outside of Europe. Its a pity, they were good. Its funny how our tastes change as we get older. Confession, although I love the band, I don't listen to any of their music anymore. Maybe once a year. Thank your for stopping by and leaving a comment. Cheers again from DOWNUNDER
