How Did the Ewoks Win?
I remember it well. A group of little furry creatures wearing tribal garb and carrying spears; they lived in tree houses and were festive and social; eating, celebrating, sitting around and telling stories. It might not be too bad running into them in the deep forests of Endor: Luke, Leia, Han, and the droids did, and, eventually, they were alright with it. I think Luke and his crew would agree that the Ewoks were more than just a lot of fun teddy bears. Well, turned out, these little guys were good helpers. Now, that might be an understatement.
Luke, Leia, Han Solo, and The Ewoks
Han Solo and his Rebel Alliance team--including the Jedi Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbaca (Wookiee partner of Han Solo), and the droids C3P0 and R2D2--are on the forest moon of Endor, on a mission to knock out the Empire's shield generator so the defenses for the new Death Star will be put out of commission. They do run into trouble in the forest when scout troopers learn of their presence and chase them down on speeder bikes and Leia ends up getting separated from the group. Princess Leia is found by a cuddly little Ewok named Wicket Wystri Warrick. Soon they find they have a common adversary. Working together to defeat Scout Troopers that ambush them, the Ewok thereafter is fond of Leia and takes her back to the Ewok village.
Meantime, Luke, Han, Chewbaca, and the droids are searching for Leia. Getting caught in a net trap, they end up held captive by a group of Ewoks. Han Solo wants to do away with them with his blaster but Luke stops him, sensing that maybe there is something better for the whole lot if they don't fight the cuddly tribe.
The Ewoks consider the droid C3P0 some sort of a god, and worship him. The rest of the crew is intended to be sacrificed. While being prepared for sacrifice, Luke tells C3P0 to tell them not to sacrifice his friends or he will come down on them with his wrath; as C3P0 gives the Ewoks the shpiel, Luke uses his Jedi powers to levitate C3P0 to add dramatic effect and convince the tribe of their droid-God's powers. The Ewoks are convinced and cut the rebel team loose.
The Rebels tell the Ewoks their story and the group is inducted into the tribe.
Luke, knowing he endangers the group because his father, Darth Vader, who is on Endor, will sense his presence, leaves the Ewok village to intentionally be captured by Imperial forces so he will be taken to his father, hoping to turn him away from the Dark Side.
The Rebel group and Ewoks plan an attack on the shield generator. Ewoks know a way to the Imperial bunker where the rebels can gain access to the shield generator, so they lead the rebels to the spot and a battle ensues. Ewoks, with great ingenuity, set booby traps for Imperial troopers, even taking down the behemoth walking metal machines called AT-ST (All Terrain Scout Transport), using trip ropes and logs attached to ropes or rolled underfoot. Ewoks even attack troops by way of hand-gliders, dropping rocks from over-head. Imperial forces begin to wipe out the tribal force of Ewoks until Chewbaca and an Ewok high-jack an AT-ST and turn the tide on the battle with the huge weapon at their disposal.
Meantime, Han and his crew are able to invade the bunker, partly due to the Imperial troops around it having departed to chase down a mischievous Ewok who stole one of their speeder bikes. However, the rebels are overwhelmed by another group of Imperial troops.
Though, as the troops are defeated by Chewbaca and the Ewoks, Han is able to gain entrance to the bunker to set up explosives to destroy the shield generator.
All the while a battle is taking place in space near the Death Star and Lando Calrissian, Han's old friend, piloting Han's old Millennium Falcon, is able to destroy the Death Star now vulnerable due to the shield being disabled.
Simultaneously, Luke is battling Darth Vader and Palpatine, the last of the Sith. The rest would be a spoiler, I will let you watch the movie.
The Significance of the Ewoks and the Battle of Endor
The Ewoks are a simple tribal people, attacked and overcome by Imperial forces on their Forest Moon home of Endor. Though at a disadvantage compared to Imperial forces' metal and technology, the Ewoks nonetheless bring down an empire. Spirited and with ingenuity, the Ewoks help the good guys triumph over tyranny and brutality. This is a major statement that those at the bottom can overcome the worst of adversity and the most imposing of obstacles and even bring down the most powerful foes.
