How to Find the Best Psychedelic Trance Music
One of my all time favorite genre's of Electronic music is Psytrance. I've always been a big fan of trance music but it really took off when I found the psychedelic sounds pumping from my speakers one late night.
I can remember it quite clearly, I had stumbled across a V.A. (various artists) mix CD that blended together old school trance, GOA, and a bit of what was being touted as 'Psytrance' at the time. Little did I know that my fascination with the music would lead me to travel many places across the country to listen to this unique sound (I even found myself in the boonies of Canada for a music festival!)
In this article, I want to share a few tips and tricks for finding really good Psytrance music on the web. In the older days, this music was quite difficult to discover because it wasn't exactly popular and rarely found its way over seas. Today, there are more than enough artists, channels, and labels to fill your Psy needs.
Spotify is one of my new, favorite tools for finding music online.
There's really no reason to pirate music anymore because it's basically all out there on the web, for free, and especially through the Spotify service. My only gripe is that there is a premium feature of Spotify that lets you keep your songs when you're offline - I wish there was a 'lite' version of this but regardless, the streaming version definitely does the trick.
I've played around with how deep you can go in order to find good Psytrance music and it's quite crazy - I'm able to find some artists that were an absolute pain in the rear to discover just a few years ago because of how obscure they are. Add Spotify as one of the most essential tools for finding Psy music, for sure.
Ektoplazm is a free Psytrance music label that's been around for quite some time. The main goal is to bring free music to the community and get some much needed exposure to Psytrance producers.
Over the years, there's been a wealth of great releases. As time progressed, there has been even more sub-genre's popping up on the site such as Psybient, Forest, Suomi, and much more. This wider selection definitely makes Ektoplazm one of the best places to snag Psytrance music.
Additionally, there's an amazing community that frequents the site and the owner, Alexander, does regular updates to the blog about the Psy community.
DI.FM's Goa/Psytrance Channel
I had other plans to include different sources for great Psytrance but I think DI.FM does the best job outside of the other two mentioned. The reason I say this is that there is a constant stream of Psy music that will keep you hooked for hours on end.
The one element that truly makes this a great source of finding Psytrance is that there are tracklists within the channel as tracks and sets are playing. You can jump in as you hear a really great tune and then YouTube it later (or pick it up on sites like PsyShop or Beatport).
Additionally, DI.FM has a really cool community that are big time music junkies so there's always great conversations and suggestions for new (or similar) music.
The Psytrance Culture
I'm a huge fan of Psytrance. I'm constantly looking for new parties to attend, reading about the culture, talking with other fans, and trying to give back to this free-thinking community.
I may not be as "in" as some people out there (believe me, some people go reaaaaally deep into the scene) but I can safely say that it's a community that I think you would enjoy - even if it's just learning about its values and history.
While digging through all this music, remember that it's a completely different culture from what you're used to - it's far out - it's weird - it's sometimes scary - but always amazing. While listening, just relax and let go, let the sound take you to new places and imagine your own stories to go along with the beat.
I hope you get into this music. It's changed my life. Maybe it'll do the same for you.
