It’s been nearly forty years since ABBA’s “The Visitors” became the world’s first pop music compact disc manufactured, and Billy Joel’s “52nd Street” the first non-classical music title commercially sold. Download sites, such as iTunes, may have taken over in popularity now, but there’s still a large audience for music compact discs.

I bought my first Paul McCartney CD in 1986, “Press”. Since that time, I’ve collected several unique McCartney related discs. Here’s five of my favorites:

1) Thrillington- 1977 vinyl album, released on CD in 1995. “Thrillington” was an all instrumental, orchestrated version of McCartney’s second solo album, “Ram”. When first sold, the album was credited to a mysterious performer named Percy “Thrills” Thrillington. Ads were placed in in the personals columns of the Evening Standard and Times UK newspapers, announcing the activities of the fictitious Thrillington. Finally, the “Thrillington” album was issued on April 29, 1977 in the UK and two and half weeks later in the U.S. It wasn’t until 1989 that McCartney admitted that he and his wife Linda were behind the “Thrillington” project. The album’s liner notes were also written by Paul McCartney under the pseudonym Clint Harrigan.

2) Oobu Joobu-Ecology-In 1995, McCartney created and hosted a radio show he dubbed “Oobu Joobu”. The “Widescreen Radio” programs consisted of McCartney demo recordings, live rehearsal and concert tracks, and unreleased songs. In 1997, the U.S. home electronics chain BestBuy packaged 3,000 copies of this CD with the latest McCartney album, “Flaming Pie”. “Oobu Joobu-Ecology” is an edited version of a June 1995 broadcast, featuring concert sound check versions of such tracks as “Looking For Changes”, “Mother Nature’s Son”, and “Peace in the Neighborhood”, a demo recording of “We All Stand Together” from the animated film “Rupert and the Frog Song”, and more. Parts of the “Oobu Joobu” radio show were also used as B-sides for the CD singles released off of “Flaming Pie”.

3) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 1999-The Fourteenth Annual Induction Dinner- 1999 brought a particularly notable group of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Beatles producer George Martin, Dusty Springfield, and others. Neil Young introduced McCartney that night. This is the CD given to each attendee at the March 15, 1999 induction dinner held at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria hotel. McCartney related tracks on the disc include “Venus and Mars/Rock Show” and “Jet” along with Beatles classics “Yesterday”, “Love Me Do”, and “A Day in the Life”. The CD itself is made up of 20 tracks from the night’s honorees.

4) The MPL Collection-2000-McCartney founded MPL (McCartney Productions Ltd.), his music publishing business in 1971. MPL handles the copyrights for songs written by McCartney himself, as well as Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Hoagy Carmichael, Broadway show tunes from “Hello Dolly!”, “Grease”, Annie” and “A Chorus Line”, and such classic tunes as “Unchained Melody”, “The Christmas Song”, and even the “I Love Lucy” theme. 99 songs from the MPL catalog are contained on five CD’s in this special promo package. One CD is made up of all McCartney tracks. The discs are all housed in a small, blue, zippered canvas bag, with the MPL logo in white on the front. A forty page booklet with details on the songs and MPLwas also inside. This promo bag was sent to media companies, broadcasters, and filmmakers to encourage them to use one of MPL’s songs in their commercials, movies, and TV productions. Apparently, a black canvas bag of this set was initially made.

5) Paul McCartney Live in Los Angeles-2010- This 12 track CD is an expanded version of a four song EP released in 2009. McCartney and his band are in top form at this free “secret show” recorded in 2007 at Hollywood’s Amoeba Music store. The 2010 release was sold only in the UK and Ireland, cover mounted to the The Mail on Sunday and the Irish Sunday Mail newspapers. The papers also included a magazine with an McCartney interview inside. As for the CD, McCartney performs three songs from his then current “Memory Almost Full” album, seven Beatles classics, and two solo tracks. “I Saw Her Standing There” and “That Was Me”, found on both the EP and 12 track disc, were nominated for 2009 Grammys in the Best Solo Rock and Pop Vocal Performance categories.
