A Complicated Set of Rules
Vincent Mangano started the American Mafia and laid out a set of rules which were broken very quickly when he was killed. The rules were meant to be taken seriously and being secret and keeping everything on the hush is a must. The rookie mafia members were always trying to bend the rules and the veteran mafia members would try to press their luck as well.
The next in succession was Albert Anastasia who took over soon only to be murdered while he was sitting in a barber's chair. This was a hit that was believed to be ordered the under boss, Carlo Gambino. The Mafia never tolerates any traders or turncoats. Those who try to skim off the top without being noticed met their fate as well.
The mafia is very complicated in that there are people who are called rats and turncoats and they may look each other in the face and tell you what you want to hear but, will then turn on each other in a heartbeat to get ahead or benefit themselves.
Now, Carlo Gambino made the family huge especially by having his hands in casino style facilities in the Bahamas and three in Cuba. As Carlo aged, he gave power to Paul Castellano shortly before his death. Carlo was loved but, many of the Mafia soldiers hated Big Paulie.
John Gotti took control of the Gambino Crime Family by having Paul Castellano murdered outside Sparks Steak House in New York. John Gotti was too flashy and let it be known who he was. He stayed in the papers and he even beat court cases. The FBI wire tapped John Gotti's hangouts and were finally able to arrest Gotti and about half of his crew.
Sammy Gravano known as "The Bull" was John Gotti's Underboss but, with the law offering him life in prison or immunity he chose freedom and testified against the whole Cosa Nostra. The Mafia is known for being a secret organization but, John Gotti like Al Capone could not be silent leaders. The Dapper Don as he was referred to in the press, wore expensive clothes and gave out turkeys on Thanksgiving but, in all actuality he was giving the FBI ammunition.
Many movies and short mini series have been done about the Mafia, The Gambino Family and even John Gotti himself. The Mafia is known for secrecy which helps them allude the law. John Gotti broke the silence by staying in the public eye but, that in turn, led the FBI right to him and was ultimately his downfall. Along with bugs, informants or snitches, tape recorders and stake-outs the FBI finally brought John Gotti down.
In the Mafia if you tell or snitch to the law about the crime organization you are labeled a rat or a turncoat which also means a contract will be put out for you. In the Mafia "Contract" means like a contract killing. You are now wanted dead.
