Game of Thrones has been the most popular TV series in the world since its adaption from George R.R. Martin's series of epic fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, in 2011. HBO did a marvellous job in bringing this complex story on screen. So many stories running in parallel, so many characters coming and dying and some of them coming back to life, the transition and cinematography is really astounding.

The first season of Game of Thrones had an average of 2.5 million viewers for its first Sunday night screenings and an average gross audience of 9.3 million viewers per episode, including all repeats and on-demand viewings. For its second season, the series had an average gross audience of 11.6 million viewers. The third season was watched by 14.2 million, making Game of Thrones the second most-viewed HBO series after The Sopranos. In the fourth season, HBO said that its average gross audience of 18.4 million viewers, later adjusted to 18.6 million, had beaten The Sopranos for the record. By the sixth season, the average gross viewing figure per episode had grown to over 23 million. Similarly, the show broke records on pay television channels in the United Kingdom with an average audience of more than 5 million across all platforms in 2016, and in Australia with a cumulative average audience of 1.2 million viewers.

As all of us are eagerly waiting for Season 7, let's look back at the best 20 moments of Season 1 to 6.

Season 1

1. Jamie throws Bran off the window

Episode: Season 1, Episode 1

The Moment:

Bran, who enjoys climbing on the walls of Winterfell, climbs an abandoned tower where he stumbles on Queen Cersei and her brother Jaime having sex. In order to keep the incestuous relationship a secret, Jaime shoves Bran out of the high window.

Arguably the first surprising moment of the series. The queen of the seven Kingdoms has an illegitimate affair with his brother and a ten year old boy is shoved off a high window to protect this secret.

A statement was made "This is not going to be just another regular fantasy series. Get ready for the unexpected".

2. Khal Drogo kills Viserys Targaryen

Episode: Season 1, Episode 6

The Moment:

Everybody thought Viserys is the Targaryen who will challenge the Iron Throne in the coming episodes and may win it as well. But to the surprise, Khal Drogo kills Viserys. And even more surprising was the way the killing happens. When Viserys confronts Drogo about the Golden Crown he was promised, Drogo poured molten gold on Viserys's head. There, you got your "Golden Crown".

3. Ned Stark is beheaded

Episode: Season 1, Episode 9

The Moment:

Played by Sean Bean, Ned Stark was the spark of the first season. The Lord of Winterfall, The Warden of the North, Hand to the King, he was the noblest man in the kingdom. When the King Baratheon died and Joffrey was deemed a bastard, Ned looked destined to be the king. Nobody saw the end of this character so early in the series. This was the most shocking moment of the first season.

4. The Battle of Blackwater

Episode: Season 2, Episode 9

The Moment:

The Battle of the Blackwater is the largest battle in the War of the Five Kings to date. This was the first time we get to see the power of wildfire. Also, we get to see the true strategist genius of Tyrion Lannister. A thoroughly spectacular display.

5. The Vault of Xaro

Episode: Season 2, Episode 10

The Moment:

Wasn't Daenerys supposed to be a nice girl trapped in a world full of monsters? Ok, by this point, we all knew that she would be one of the main contender for the Iron Thorne. But I didn't expect her to be this ruthless. After Xaro and Doreah betray her, she locks them both in Xaro's beloved treasure vault and leaves them to rot.

Season 3

6. The Red Wedding

Episode: Season 3, Episode 9

The Moment:

I don't think "The Red Wedding" needs any explanation. It speaks for itself and no matter how hard I try, I won't be able to do justice to it. One of the most surprising moments of the Game of Thrones, the show was not the same after it.

Season 4

7. The Purple Wedding

Episode: Season 4, Episode 2

The Moment:

Oh! How long did we wait for this. Joffrey was the most hated character so far and we all longed for his death. Then came the Purple Wedding. Any wedding after the Red Wedding was supposed to be interesting and it definitely lived up to the expectations.

8. Court trial of Tyrion Lannister

Episode: Season 4, Episode 6

The Moment:

"I did not kill Joffrey, but I wish that I had! Watching your vicious bastard die gave me more relief than a thousand lying whores! I wish I was the monster you think I am! I wish I had enough poison for the whole pack of you! I would gladly give my life to watch you all swallow it!"

There were many surprises here and there in the trial but this episode would always be known for Tyrion's speech. What a speech it was. Simply astounding.

9. Lysa through the moon door

Episode: Season 4, Episode 7

The Moment:

Use and throw is the principle Littlefinger lives by. Lord Bealish knows what strings to pull and when. And he also knows when to dispose of the things no longer wanted. No longer of any use to him, Lysa Arryn is summarily dispatched through the Eyrie's unique mode of execution, the Moon Door.

10. Red Viper vs The Mountain

Episode: Season 4, Episode 8

The Moment:

A combat between Oberyn Martell (Red Viper) and Sir Gregor Clegane (The Mountain). With the lives of two widely loved characters (Tyrion and Oberyn) on stake, the stage was set for an epic win for Oberyn. And looked like everything was going as per the plan. But Oh Oberyn! What have you done!

11. The Battle for the Wall

Episode: Season 4, Episode 9

The Moment:

A full episode of spectacular destruction, this was the best battle of the show so far. Giants, monsters, man-eaters, wildlings, it had all. An absolute carnage.

12. Death of Ygritte

Episode: Season 4, Episode 9

The Moment:

"You know nothing, Jon Snow". The woman who gave the best catchphrase of the century leaves the show in one of the best battle of the show.

Cornering Jon Snow, Ygritte aims an arrow at him. Seeing him and speaking to him weakens her resolve and she hesitates, only to have Olly shoot her through the chest from behind. Jon holds her in his arms, and she weakly asks if he remembers the cave where they made love - where she said she wished they could stay forever and not have to face the war and death outside. Ygritte says they should have stayed in that cave, and then dies.

13. Tyrion kills Tywin

Episode: Season 4, Episode 10

The Moment:

One moment we are worrying about the fate of Tyrion, the next moment we witness the much deserved killing of the most hated Lannister. While we all wished for a gruesome death for Tywin, a crossbow through the chest in lavatory was equally satisfying.

Season 5

14. The Walk of Shame

Episode: Season 5, Episode 10

The Moment:

What you sow is what you reap. Cersei had it coming for a long long time. She was going to be humiliated and humiliated bad. But nobody expected it to be this shameful and humiliating. I am afraid to say that something inside me felt bad for her.

15. Jon Snow dies??

Episode: Season 5, Episode 10

The Moment:

Like anybody believed it. Everybody knew that Jon Snow is going to come back. The only debate was on how. Did he not die in the first place? Is he going to become a white walker? Or will it be the Red Woman? Or something else.

16. Arya loses her eyesight

Episode: Season 5, Episode 10

The Moment:

Arya's punishment for stealing from the Many-Face God is blindness. Yes we all knew this is just a hurdle in Arya's path to become a "No one", but it was about damn time that she completes her training and gets back to her hit list.

Season 6

17. Hold the Door!!!

Episode: Season 6, Episode 5

The Moment:

Out of nowhere, the suspense of Hodor is unveiled. Jaws were dropped and minds were blown. Nobody saw it coming. Nobody could have seen it coming. What a revelation.

18. The Battle of the Bastards

Episode: Season 6, Episode 9

The Moment:

I can't put this in words.

19. The End of Ramsay

Episode: Season 6, Episode 9

The Moment:

A delightfully gruesome end of the most hated character on the show. That smirk on Sansa's face after getting her long overdue revenge was just priceless.

20. Cersie unleashes wildfire

Episode: Season 6, Episode 10

The Moment:

Humiliated and thrashed, we all knew Cersei would take her revenge. But it would be this soon and this horrifying, I don't think anybody would have guessed. Half of the main characters were turned into ashes in one go. Shocking but spectacular.

Is Game of Thones the best TV show of all time?
