Good Barenaked Ladies Songs They Don't Play On The Radio

The Barenaked Ladies

The Barenaked Ladies have always been one of my favorite bands. I own almost all of their CDs and am sometimes disappointed when I hear the limited selection of their songs the radio stations choose to play because so many of there songs are just as good or in some cases even better. Don't get me wrong, songs like "One Week" and "Pinch Me" are awesome songs but they seem to be chosen solely based on their catchy tunes and lyrics and not on particularly deep content or meaning. Call me crazy but I like my music to touch me from all angles, not just be something I can bob my head or dance to. I've noticed especially that they don't tend to play some of their more political songs, which are very well-written with good deep meaning and catchy tunes. So here are my top five Barenaked Ladies songs they don't usually play on the radio:

5. Sell, Sell, Sell

One of their more political songs from the Maroon album. Pretty much what I got from it is that we are all ignorant of other people and cultures until we are at war with them and then we feel obligated to hate them.

4. I'll Be That Girl

"I'll Be That Girl" is from the Barenaked Ladies' album Stunt (which is my favorite album). It still has a great tune and I love the way the lyrics flow. In my opinion it's the classic story about wanting someone who doesn't want you back and we've all been there.

3. Light Up My Room

Also from the Stunt album. It's very soothing. It's part of the mix I listen to when I'm having trouble sleeping. I had trouble finding the meaning behind this song but to me the lyrics are open to interpretation. Obviously some nostalgia and love in there.

2. Helicopters

Another of their political songs also from the Maroon album. A very good story in this song, told by the point of view of a journalist or other media figure who sees the very real impacts of war and is finally touched by them.

1. Maybe You're Right

From The Barenaked Ladies Are Men album. One of the best vocals of all of their songs. Good instrumentals too. Sometimes I find they beat you over the head with the accordion but this song is great all around!

Fun Kids Albums

Some people also don't know that the Barenaked Ladies made a few kids albums including Snack Time. Very cute and funny songs including "7 8 9" and "Crazy ABCs". Your kids will love it and the songs are written with the great sense of humor we've come to expect and love from the Barenaked Ladies.

Interesting that you point out little known songs here. I do like the band too.

I agree, some of the best songs ever are the ones "hidden" in the albums. Good ole "B" sides, to me are more famous than ever. I love all of your choices. Didn't know they did some children's songs, awesome.
