Gothic Music III

Updated on December 12, 2016

Gothic Industrial

Shotgun gothic industrial style is a combination of electronic music and gothic industrial aesthetics. The founder of the style is considered to be the German Das Ich, at approximately the same time of coldwave in gothic industrial passed and the old French artist Die Form. Also, the sound of gothic industrial music has been observed in some compositions known Slovenian project Laibach, but still their work relates to the industrial and post-industrial music. But Mozart (Mozart) from Umbra Et Imago in your project Dracul addressed in time for the gothic industrial music to the fullest. Another landmark in the gothic industrial project can be regarded as an American project Emilie Autumn, which appeared in the late 90's and early 2000's, in which he was the only participant combines gothic industrial areas with various other gothic, indie and metal-scene. Now in its pure form in this style few people playing, so that's been going on for several years, the Germans and French are a unique phenomenon in the gothic scene. This direction can be safely regarded as dead, though its elements are a few projects from the field of gothic electro, but the same style of his ousted, becoming more and more popular.

Dark Cabaret

The young dark cabaret trend emerged in the late '90s in the United States. The founder of the style can be considered as Voltaire, but also Tom Waits made a certain contribution to the development of sound.Musically dark cabaret is at the essence of post-punk with elements of death-rock with the active use of musical instruments such as violin, accordion and brass. All of these tools usually take a leading role.

Then in the late 90's there was a German artist Schneewittchen, which was used in the electronic music dark cabaret, which became a new round of development style. Dark cabaret music usually does not attract a lot of listeners, but in the mid-2000s Italian project Ianva started using dark cabaret in his music, combining them with martial industrial, dark folk and sound experiments. This example was followed by other artists from the industrial scene. Of the followers of pure dark cabaret it is now possible to allocate US The Dresden Dolls and French Katzenjammer Kabarett.

Unfortunately, in the post-Soviet stage, these projects are not available or are very deep underground.

Gothic Metal

Gothic metal is another controversial style of dark scenes. Mainly due to the fact that there are two different gothic metal (such as, for example, there are two different hardcore). A gothic metal came out of the symphonic metal and doom-metal and is, roughly speaking, is generally light version sympho-metal with a dominant female opera or trying so be vocal, sometimes chants, hard crisp pronounced guitar riffs and the typical "metal" structure compositions: "verse - chorus - verse - chorus - guitar solo - chorus - a chorus." This style refers to the metal scene. Its members are Dutch After Forever, Autumn and Within Temptation and Germans Xandria.

Part of the work of gothic metal addicted to certain periods of the way Italians Lacuna Coil, Americans have Type-O-Negative, the Dutch and the Germans The Gathering Flowing Tears. By the same Gothic music has a very indirect relationship, although many Goths, who were previously Metalist came to Gothic music through it. The real gothic metal roots to darkwave and post-punk, is not so clear guitar shape is not growling and drums in it more uniform, resembling a drum machine.

A striking pioneer style is a Swiss group Lacrimosa, which went from the darkwave-sound in a weighted way.At the same time as the first gothic metal album of the Swiss in neighboring Germany was born band Dreadful Shadows, who also played the same gothic metal. It should come down to 4 years after the publication of the first gothic metal album in Germany, a second band playing gothic metal from birth - Mantus. In the early 2000s, followed by the Germans example Lacrimosa Illuminate and Untoten, stepping down from the darkwave-sound in the gothic metal.

German artist Umbra Et Imago has become known in the dark scene in the first place thanks to BDSM-show concerts. Also German project Samsas Traum made a solid contribution to the development of style, but most of his albums became an experimental combination of different styles as the dark scenes, and metal, so except for one album in the early 2000s, his work passed by gothic metal. In the early 2000s, there was one more team playing gothic metal - Germans ASP. As I mentioned, there are two different gothic metal.

However, there are two groups that have turned out to combine the sound of these two styles together and create a still point of contact with the gothic subculture subculture metal. In 1998, it succeeded in Norwegian doom-metal band Theatre Of Tragedy on the album "Aegis" and the Germans Crematory in 1999 on the album "Act Seven". Both groups came to the gothic metal music from doom metal, which served as the spread of Gothic subculture among metalheads. However, these two albums do not become an impetus to the development of sound podobnogo among metalheads, although one album project Erben Der Schopfung Luxembourg denies it. Recent continue to walk on the already beaten track symphonic metal with female vocals except for the two groups, which in gothic metal are gone, but in the Duma are not left: Swedes Tiamat began to play gothic rock, and their colleagues in the Swedish scene Lake Of Tears went into the psychedelic area, combining post-doom with psychedelic rock, but later returned to its classic sound of earlier albums.

British band Paradise Lost is considered by many metallers benchmark and trendsetter gothic metal, but played mostly doom-metal and gothic metal music ratio is mediocre. The modern stage of gothic metal gothic there are extremely rare, however, to name the style of the dead, I would not. Moreover in early 2000 gothic metal served as a good springboard for the creation of a new combination of styles. The Germans brought together Unheilig gothic metal, neue deutsche harte and gothic electro. Poluchilas really hits, dance and music commercially competent delicious food that the audience perceived to cheer.

Back To The USSR:

  • Russia: Bitter Joy, Unreal (+ gothic electro)
  • Ukraine: cold Sonce (+ love-metal)
  • Lithuania: Kuosma Raja, Liunuosna
  • Kazakhstan: For You (+ love-metal)

The border styles:

Dreampop

In the early 80s British project Cocteau Twins diversified his music in the style of a more ethereal air fateful parties and easy electronic component. So there was one more direction of music called dreampop, which stands at the junction of the gothic scene and indie. And while most bands of this direction are still indie-scene, many fans of ethereal dreampop listen in the same amount as the ethereal. Of the group, the most interesting for lovers of dark scenes, stands out mainly Americans: The Moon Seven Times, the second half of creativity Love Spirals Downwards, some releases of Autumn's Grey Solace and more electronic direction creativity Claire Voyant.

The most publicized was the style after the soundtrack of the famous American TV series director David Lynch (David Lynch) "Twin Peaks" (Twin Peaks), which contains the songs of American singer Julie dreampop-Cruz (Julee Cruice). Recently dreampop style more and more moves in the direction of indie-scene, going hand in hand with other indie style, ethereal and released from post-punk - shoegazing. However, shoegazing is purely indie-music, the outgoing sound in a dirty garage rock sound. From modern dreampop projects can be distinguished Brits Still Corners, reminding sounding soundtrack to "Twin Peaks".

Back To The USSR:
Virtually all projects used in other styles dreampop indie-scene, and in its pure form known high-grade projects there.

Gothabilly

The style is a fusion of gothabilly rockabilly subculture and Gothic. Musically, he came out of the post-punk and psychobilly. One of the progenitors of style is considered to be an American band The Cramps, but the style was formed later. Musically it is not much like a post-punk, gothic rock and other styles of gothic music. For many there is a reasonable question: why is gothabilly border style with Gothic music, because musically there's nothing there? Right. More precisely partially true. There was nothing before the time, as some death-rock-band began to play gothabilly with death-rock and horror-punk, which has borne fruit, and the style began to conquer the audience among themselves ready. In the late 90's out several collections with the main representatives of this trend, the majority of which are not directly related to the gothic music.

Most interesting in this area for lovers of dark scenes will be two main projects: the Canadian Vampire Beach Babes and the later work of the British Zombina And The Skeletones. As I wrote, the style is considered to be pioneers of the American project in the mid-70s under the name of The Cramps. In the late 80's they were joined by other Americans Deadbolt, who played in various styles of rock, from surf rock and rockabilly and finishing gothabilly, but their music emanated gloom in each of the styles used. Later in the modern history in the late 90's and early 2000's in the genre gothabilly played Swedes The Coffinshakers, Austrians Bloodsucking Zombies From Outer Space in conjunction with the prevailing horror-punk, Australians Zombie Ghost Train, Americans Ghoultown, and other projects. The music theme is actively used a zombie apocalypse, various versions of the dead bride, and other such things from horror movies' 80s. The term gothabilly appeared for a long time, but finally formed, and the style was continued only in the 2000s.

Back To The USSR:
Unfortunately, in the post-Soviet stage, these projects are not available or are deep underground.

Neoclassics

Neoclassicism in music was born long before being born the gothic subculture in general, but the musical preferences of neoclassicism and romanticism ready to thrive in the same team. I will not tell today the history of neo-classical music, because it will be long and unformatted. Neoclassic in the gothic scene is widely used mainly in the ethereal style. The combination of neo-classical opuses Air-dominant female vocals are often used and applied by different musicians from different countries. Therefore, in their audience appeared craving for beauty. Some musicians of martial industrial area is also used in his work elements of neo-classical, but most of them still lies in the marching rhythms and industrial sound. Allocate individual projects using neoclassical music, would be to transfer the majority of the representatives of ethereal style so I will implement this idea is not life, but do not indicate the neoclassical music as gothic border could not.

Myths and legends

  • Style alternative scene called love-metal fans some MTV considered gothic and HIM group often mentioned along with the Lacrimosa and The Sisters Of Mercy as a representative of the Gothic scene, which is a common mistake. Perhaps it looks on the gothic background of rap and pop artists on MTV, but no relation to love-metal stage gothic music does not have, although some come to Gothic music is through HIM or other representatives of the love-metal.

  • As I wrote, darkwave word originally referred to the entire movement of the dark scenes, but now it is already an established style. But many listeners there is a habit to call this word everything that does not fit into their familiar music styles. Thus, in the vast network of Internet, you can find the word darkwave about creativity Deine Lakaien, Diary Of Dreams, Sopor Aeternus, Dark Sanctuary, Blutengel, Das Ich and even some metal bands, between which there is nothing in common except the accessories of add to the gothic subculture (for except metal, of course).

  • Many fans of the alternative scene and the metal scene or see latex corset and black make-up vocalist, or hear the notes sympho-metal music and immediately recorded in their gothic (rock / metal / folk, and the like). Gothic scene did not come out of the metal, so the combination of the words gothic doom-metal, gothic death-metal, gothic black-metal, power-gothic-metal, or, as is often done in recent extreme gothic metal or modern gothic metal / modern gothic rock is not It exists, such as styles. The same, but to a much lesser degree, exists in the indie-scene especially after the emergence of indie-style witch house, which many write or darkwave, or industrial. Witch house is exclusively indie-music, which has no relation either to darkwave, nor industrial. All of these consoles, which can be seen in the description of a music band, invented labels for commercial success (the word gothic attracts many), or the band just wants to appear Gothic, but it does not mean that it is it.

  • Cyber-Goth - a style of goth, with mostly visual, but not the style of music. True, there were preconditions for its formation by groups Goteki and Intra-Venus, however, the development and the formation of the style on it and completed, so the electronic gothic music called Cyber-Goth wrong, and have the more post-industrial style dark electro and EBM.
