Gucci Mane From Nothin To Something

Updated on June 6, 2010

Gucci Mane - "Trap House"

The Beginning

Radric Davis, better known for his rapping alias, Gucci Mane, who is commonly mistaken as Gucci Man, is a rap artist out of East Atlanta, Zone 6. He first began writing raps and recording music when he was only 14 years old.

Around 2005, Gucci Mane met his former partner, Big Cat while serving a jail sentence. Big Cat became interested in managing Gucci Mane after hearing Gucci Mane spit a freestyle in jail and they quickly began doing business together. Once released from jail, Gucci Mane Big Cat Records signed Gucci Mane's first deal. Gucci Mane shortly after, dropped his first single, 'Black T' and saw almost instant success with the DJ and radio stations spinning his records all the time. That's when record companies began attempting to contact Gucci Mane for a record deal which he turned down numerous times.

The Big Cat Records Split

Sometime around 2008 and 2009, Gucci Mane parted ways with Big Cat and Big Cat Records. It isn't entirely understood what went wrong, but Gucci Mane has dissed Big Cat various times over different records and Gucci Mane mixtapes. It is thought to be over Big Cat withholding monies owed to Gucci Mane and releasing material not authorized by Gucci Mane. The 2009 album released by Gucci Mane and Big Cat Records, 'Murder was the Case' was an unofficial album not agreed with by Gucci Mane since they had already parted ways. Since splitting with Big Cat Records, Gucci Mane has began his own record label, So Icey Entertainment.

So Icey Entertainment & Beyond

So Icey Entertainment is linked with the promotional team, Mizay Entertainment that promotes artists such as Nicki Minaj and Oj Da Juiceman along with Gucci Mane. The So Icey roster does not include Nicki Minaj although they are closely affiliated through Mizay Entertainment.

The roster consists of rap artists Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman, Waka Flocka Flame, Wooh Da Kid, & Frenchie who make up the 1017 Brick Squad. Is it believed that 1017 is the apartment number that Gucci Mane lived in in his earlier years in Atlanta. There are two So Icey producers known as Doc Jay and the infamous Zaytoven. Other So Icey affiliates include Lil Wayne, DJ Drama, Supastar J Quik, DJ Scream, DJ Holiday, Shawty Lo, and Jon Geezy.

Since parting ways with Big Cat and beginning his own label, So Icey Ent, Gucci Mane has also signed a new deals with Atlantic Records, Asylum Records as well as Warner Brothers Records. He has broke into the mainstream still having his street cred and hood following making him a strong artist in the game.

With his new found fame, Gucci has had countless features on hit singles in the year of 2009. He has also dropped a #1 record, The State vs Radric Davis despite being in jail during the release of the CD. The future for Gucci Mane is indeed a bright one. He just has to wait out his jail sentence, but jail or prison time is definitely nothing new to Gucci Mane.
