The Best (& Funniest) Guitar Faces - Guitarists Playing With Eyes Closed & Loving It!

Updated on May 19, 2014

Here's a great example - Eric Clapton doing his thing

Guitarists doing their thing - always entertaining!

One thing I have noticed over the years is that some guitarists really love music. When they're playing, they almost look like they're making love to the guitar. My friend and I have always referred to this as them 'Doing Their Thing' and over the years have enjoyed watching various musicians displaying their game face, while creating sweet music.

I actually think that someone really enjoying doing what they're doing and really feeling it, somehow makes it more enjoyable for the viewer. At least it does in my book. This article is about some of the best musicians around when it comes to expressing how much they really enjoy playing.

Doing their thing?

I'm sure you must have noticed this phenomenon. The more outrageous the solo, the crazier the face pulled. Some guys play entire songs with their eyes closed. I've put a few of the best underneath, I couldn't put this in order of Thing as they all have differing styles. Either way, here are the guys that I think really know how to Do Their Thing.

David Gilmour

David Gilmour

David Gilmour was the guitarist for Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd were an amazing band with some really awesome guitar work and of course their music still stands up very well today. Lead guitar was handled by Gilmour, while vocals were handled by Roger Waters and Gilmour.

Gilmour still tours today, although Pink Floyd are no longer together. He has released several solo albums and at the time of writing is currently working on another.

When Gilmour has to break into a solo is when you're most likely to spot him Doing His Thing, he is a great proponent of Thing and pulls some great faces. Gilmour's game face looks like he has a piece of lemon in his mouth. His lips are pursed. The lemon is bitter. He is really feeling it.

Signature face - The Lemon Suck

Lips are pursed through this entire solo. MMmmwah!

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix achieved a lot in the music world in his short life and short musical career. He is to this day someone who you think of when you're thinking of legendary guitar players and had a lot of technical skill as well as being a great showman. He partied hard, played hard and unfortunately died hard when he choked on his own vomit at the age of only 27.

Jimi was a man that came the closest I think to someone looking like he was actually making love to his guitar. His facial expressions were borderline obscene and it doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to picture his sex face. It's the face you can see in the picture and video below, it had to be!

Signature face - Sex Face Howl

Eyes are closed throughout. Sweet love is being made to this guitar

B.B. King

B.B. King is another legend of the guitar, he is a great blues guitarist who is still playing and touring to this day, even though he's now in his late eighties. He has had a very long and tireless career, playing many thousands of shows over the years, with his unique blues style, which has influenced and excited many casual fans and other masters of the guitar. He looks to me like a very relaxed guy with whom I would happily share a beer and a glass of rum.

His game face is one that always makes me smile, he looks to me like he's dreaming away and really enjoying whatever it is he's dreaming about. Don't expect his eyes to open if you're watching him play, but do expect movement, smiles, nods and sometimes what looks like open surprise at the music that he is creating. It looks like he enjoys making as much as the audience loves listening!

Have you ever seen a happier guitar player?

Eric Clapton

I think Eric Clapton is a great artist and he has released loads of albums, from his earliest stuff with Cream in the late sixties, his solo stuff and lots of collaborations with other great guitarists, including B.B. King, Mark Knopfler etc. I have all of Claptons albums and regularly listen to his music, while drinking beers and relaxing.

Clapton actually has an amazing concert called Crossroads that he does every few years to fund the drug treatment centre in Antigua that he founded. On these concerts, he invites who he considers to be the best guitarists in the world and plays with them. I would absolutely love to go to one of those shows and the bonus there would be you wouldn't just see Clapton doing his thing, but you'd see all types of thing from each guitarist. In fact they'd all be on stage having a thing competition. That would be a lot of fun and I'm going to try to get tickets to the next show.

Anyway Clapton has a particular face he likes to pull when he is on stage. He enjoys very long drawn out solos and often extends his songs by several minutes just doing his thing on stage powering out another epic solo, with his eyes closed all the way through of course. He will be on stage for sometimes 4-5 minutes at a time with eyes completely closed before opening them occasionally to check the audience are still there. He's feeling the music. Now when I watch Clapton doing his thing on stage, there is something it looks like he's doing. It looks like.. Hmm how do I put this. It looks like he's 'entertaining' himself and feels quite naughty about it too.

Clapton doing his thing on stage is obviously catching as his bandmates also take it turn to do theirs. The camera will often swing around to show all the other musicians on stage with their eyes closed, also feeling the music. Even his drummer gets involved. Very funny to watch in my opinion, but hey they're clearly enjoying themselves. The video shows some of his closed eye game face.

You'll get hairy palms Eric...

You've seen the contenders. Now have your say.

Who in your opinion pulls the best face while playing guitar?

See results

Some great faces pulled throughout

Well I hope you enjoyed this article, showcasing some of the best closed eye guitar face, from some very well respected guitarists. Not just respected by me for their music, but for their crazy faces and their ability to really show you how much they're feeling the music that they're creating.

If you have any guitarists that you think I should check out, then please add a comment in the comments section below and don't forget to vote for who in your opinion pulls the best and most entertaining face while playing guitar in the poll!

Thanks for reading and always enjoy Doing Your Thing. These guys do!

      Rain Defense,

I meant every word. And your writing goes deeper than a laugh I am guessing. So keep it up.

      Your Friend,

I don't think I've ever had such a nice comment about my writing which is only done for a laugh most of the time. Thanks!

      Rain . . .

This is an excellent piece of writing. Amazing, to be quite frank with you.

I loved every word--and the lay-out was superb. Interesting, in-depth, helpful, and very informative. Great job.

Voted up and all the choices because you deserve it. Any hub/story about guitaring or guitar players and I am hooked. In fact, I bought an acoustic from Fender last year and I am rekindling this love I had for the strings I had in 1974.

You have such a gift for writing. Just keep writing and good things are bound to happen to you.

Thanks Nell, I chuckled to myself while writing it and finding the pictures! I can't see how anyone could watch the videos and not raise at the very least a smile.
