Borat--a guaranteed funny movie starring Sacha Baron Cohen

Updated on January 6, 2015

Borat and Ali G retired by Sacha Baron Cohen

Sacha Baron Cohen recently announced that he's dropping his highly successful alter ego characters, Borat and Ali G. "When I was being Ali G and Borat, I was in character sometimes 14 hours a day, and I came to love them. So admitting I am never going to play them again is quite a sad thing."

Sad also for Cohen's fans! I wonder what comes next from this sui generis, talented and brainy comedian?

Borat--A Mini-review

I saw Borat yesterday. It was a crude but funny movie. For me it didn't quite live up to the hype. I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't already seen most of Da Ali G shows on HBO. I'm not sure what Cohen will do for an encore. He may be a one trick pony. We'll see. I've seen many Woody Allen movies and never failed to enjoy them. I'm not sure the same will be true of Sacha Baron Cohen. One may be enough. I enjoy Da Ali G, but I enjoy Larry David's Curb your enthusiasm more. Some say that's because I resemble Larry David in several respects. Not sure I agree, but it's possible!

Cohen plays a Kazakstani reporter who travels across the United States conducting impromptu "ambush" interviews which reveal a number of Americans' prejudices and excentricities,e.g., the anti-Semiktism he encountered in a country music bar where the patrons are singing along with Borat "Throw the Jews down the well."

"The basic Borat MO is familiar to anyone who's watched Da Ali G Show, the British (and later HBO) semireality show in which Baron Cohen, as one of three different personas, interviewed public figures with a deliberate cluelessness that forced his subjects to step outside their usual talking points." (Dana Stevens review in Slate.)

I love Ali G, and I think the entire "legal affair" he had with the government of Kazakhstan last year was hilarious. I'm anxious to see this flick too. The thong pic is too much!!!

      Chaqun son gout!

I guess I liked it because Cohen was satirizing some things in this country that need to be exposed to sunlight.

I've never seen one of his movies but certainly know his name and what he does. Is he as funny as Yalov Smirnoff?

I've never seen Yalov Smirnoff. But Sacha Baron Cohen/Borat is very funny if you like social satire.
