Hidden Musical Hollywood Talents

The E Spot, Project Angel Food and L.A.'s Hidden Artistic Giants

The E Spot, Project Angel Food and L.A.'s Hidden Artistic Giants

The E Spot, a trendy double floored restaurant, nestled on Tujunga Blvd. in Studio City; is owned by Prince's (Symbol/Artist Formerly Known as Prince & back to Prince) Sheila E. I decided to go along and simply planned on doing a write up, on an artist that I have known for just over two years, Keith Borden.

Keith Borden, is one of those strangely talented working artist around Hollywood, where nearly everyone in the industry knows who he is and how talented he is but basically the general public may have never heard of him or his soulful and according to comic/actor/radio host, Steve Harvey, "sexy" R&B voice.

Everyone, who is anyone, in Hollywood knows or has at least heard the name Keith Borden. He is an openly gay, African American man, from the now infamous town of Ferguson, Missouri. He was picked out of a majority white school district at the age of 9, for his high numbers on an academic proficiency test.

At the age of 9, Keith Borden, started doing improv and working on radio stations in the Ferguson and St. Louis, Missouri area. He dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and did what black folks call "The Chitin Circuit" meaning he toured around doing musical theater aka 'The Tyler Perry Path To Fame'.

Keith Borden, a now 50-something year old artist, that lives in West Hollywood, Ca. appears to have an innate ability at turning on the star power. Just last year, every Sunday, one could hear Keith Borden and soulful funky sounds on the otherwise generic and plastic streets of West Hollywood, at Don't Tell Mamas (Soulful Sundays) where Keith would not only pack the house with fans of R&B, soul and old school 'black' adult contemporary jams but would literally be the buzz of the town around Hollywood's elite.

At any given Keith Borden show, one can look around and spot renowned music producers, the best vocalist in the business, famous artist, musical instructors skipping out on their American Idol Rehearsal schedules, simply to jump on the stage and perform alongside Keith.

On Friday, April 3rd at Sheila E's joint, the E Spot, there was a benefit for a non-profit that delivers food to people in Los Angeles that are living with HIV/Aids and other chronic illnesses. Keith Borden was the head liner along with Elaine Gibbs of X-Factor Fame and Sally 'Hot Lips' Kellerman, from the film, Mash.

Elaine Gibbs of X-Factor Fame, brought down the house with multiple standing ovations. Her performance of Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing track, was a mix of the late White Houston with the disciplined energy of Tina Turner.

Keith Borden showed of his vocal genre switching abilities by easily going from jazz, soul, r&b and funk all in under two minutes.

Jonathan Weitz, a die-hard follower of Keith Borden, and close friends with legends like the late Donna Summer, couldn't stop raving about the Project Angel Food benefit performance put on by Keith. Jonathan Weitz, the son of a 1960s rocker, Mark Weitz of the band Strawberry Alarm Clock, best known for their 1960s hit, "Incense and Peppermints" has followed Keith Borden for years.

In fact, hearing such raves aren't uncommon when one brings up Keith Borden's name around musical Hollywood. There is hardly any music producer or successful artist, some that pack stadiums, which hasn't heard of his gifted voice or at least heard someone from their entourage lavish praise on his talent.

The Project Angel Food benefits, regardless of it being held on a major Catholic and Jewish Holiday (Good Friday and start of Pass Over) was a huge success, with the non-profit raising thousands of dollars, mostly from extra donations that were given by patrons who were really impressed with the show's line-up and the degree of talent, that they saw on stage.
