Updated on May 19, 2017

In older times, people used to spend their free time with their family, friends or by doing some physical activities. Like, playing some sort of game, reading, and writing etc. Earlier kids love to hear interesting stories from their grandparents about their personal experiences. Children used to be a helping hand to their families. They were obedient to their elders.

But, with the rapid growth in the field of internet, television. telephone industries, People have started spending most of their time using these devices. We start feeling helpless and anxious if do not find our phone around us. Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are playing a huge role in distracting the young minds. Moreover, the education system these days are Media-Centric. Which means the mode of teaching in most of the educational institutions is through using media. So, due to this kids develop the habit of using media from an early age. Researchers have proved that using social media leave a severe impact on the mental health of children. Some of the most common impacts of using social media in our lives are as follows.

Many young people fall prey to the cyber bullying. As its very east to befool somebody by using social media sites. One can easily hide their true identity here and can harass anyone who appears weaker to them.

Depression

Psychologists call it "internet addiction" where people have less sleep due to excessive use of internet which further causes depression. The other important cause is, people try to envy others life when they see their friends updating new and exciting things about their lives. This makes them feel pity for themselves and makes them depressed.

The personal information we share on social networking sites, such as Facebook, twitter, and Instagram can easily be copied or downloaded by other people even after applying security settings on them.

Contrary to this, there are some positive effects also of using social media and the internet:

Better IQ

Children have better IQ now because of Media-Centric learning. Now they can have each and every information through the internet. Plus it's available 24 by 7. Now we need not spend a lot of money buying expensive books, nor we need to wait for our desired copy of notes from some library.

Numerous job opportunities have come up with the growth of internet and media. Various jobs for app developers, testers, bloggers have introduced. Not only jobs but it is a great platform to boost one's business.

Job Prospects

To conclude with, I want to say that, the excess of everything is bad. Above we have discussed some side effects of using internet or media. Though it has some benefits as well. I suggest all the parents out there to guide their children right. They should have a check on their kids. Parents should know that which app is useful for the mental growth of their kids and which is not. Also, there should be some time fixed to use the internet. So, they can spend some quality time with their families and can learn some good traits.
