If you are a regular viewer of television news channels or reader of a newspaper, you might want to reconsider how TV news channel watching or reading news paper affecting your life. Definitely you have some advantages of watching news channels or reading news papers. You come to know first (after the journalist who gathered the news, of course) about the incidents or latest happenings around the world. You can keep yourself updated about the current events and have knowledge about events being developed.
But when you consider the pros and cons of watching TV news channels, you might be better off not watching the 24/7 news channels altogether. You will see why shortly.
Everybody have enough problems to deal with. We don’t want to unconsciously add more stress to the already stress filled life. 90% percent of the news we watch in my opinion is negative in nature and it is not going effect your life style drastically if you don’t watch the news.
Some people watch the news at 11 pm just before going to the bed. What a way to sleep with ton of negative thoughts in the head. You will not be able to sleep as your mind will be processing all the information you just fed and figuring out where to store it for later recall in case you wanted it.
Here is an example scenario: You and your family went out for dinner and had a great time. Your kids went to bed. Still there is an hour to go to bed, so you tuned on the TV to watch the news. There is news about a big fortune 500 company announcing a layoff of 12376 employees. You also heard that this is the sixth company to announce layoffs in last couple of months. They reeled out the relevant statistics about unemployment and how it is growing. You happen to work for a similar fortune 500 company. Now the thoughts going through your mind are like this: Will I be laid off? I have three kids and wife to take care of and I am the only income earner in the family. How do pay the mortgage if I get laid off? What happens to my family if I can’t find another job quickly? What happens to my children’s education? What will my wife think of me? Will my house be repossessed? How do I make the car payments? On and on you keep asking similar questions.
When it is time to go to bed, how do you think you will get a good night sleep if you have all those thoughts going through your mind? You were perfectly alright before watching the news. This is self induced stress. You could have easily avoided it if you haven’t watched the news.
I personally stopped watching TV news channels or reading a news paper 10 years ago. I don't feel like I am missing anything, including weather forecast. Somebody would tell me if something great/disaster happened or a storm is on the way.
Here are some reasons why you should not watch TV news channels or reading news papers:
Everybody wants to know what's happening in the world what the latest incidents are. Weekly news magazines or news papers in olden days used to serve this purpose. Now news has become a big business. There are hundreds of channels which relay only news 24/7. What news will there be to cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
Increased stress levels
We are more attracted to negative news than positive news. Once you watch the news, related videos and expressed opinions, those thoughts linger in your mind and you start thinking about it for a long time. Sometimes you visualize the things and circumstances in negative way and start feeling the stress in your life.
Causes lack of sleep
The stress generated in the above fashion effects other areas of your life. Your attitude towards things will change. The images you see on TV linger in your head and you cannot stop thinking about them.
Induces others people’s opinions
Media is very powerful. They can portray something good as bad and vice versa. Even though the expressed opinions are just those (opinions), some people accept them as truth and act accordingly.
Stop watching TV news channels or reading news papers for a week. Surprisingly you don’t miss anything. The benefits are more time to do the things you really enjoy and less stress in your life as you don’t have think about all the events happening around the world.
