How To Train Your Dragon 3 Movie Review

In How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie, the main character Hiccup is all grown up.

How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie

How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie begins with the main character Hiccup, now a grown, albeit young, man.

Hiccup has fashioned an outfit made from dragon scales that is protective and also will apparently help with the 'aerodynamics' when he is flying on his dragon, the Night Fury dragon named Toothless.

Hiccup is mistaken for a demon in an opening scene of How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie

As Hiccup walks around in his dragon scales outfit at night, in the dark, he terrifies someone that mistakes Hiccup for a demon!

He's just Hiccup!

After the commotion and fiery adventure subside (the dragon scales outfits can protect humans from fire), things carry on "as usual."

Hiccup was able to plead with and convince the person that he terrified that no, he's not a demon. He's just Hiccup!

The scenery

When, the dark and dreary scenes are not occurring, everything is bright and beautiful.

Some of the scenic animation offers beautiful views, refreshing to see in How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie.

Hiccup is a Viking

Hiccup is a Viking that continues to operate among a large community of Vikings. In the first movie of the How To Train Your Dragon movie series, Hiccup was just a child. Now we see Hiccup grown up and frequently working at making these outfits made out of dragon scales not just for himself but for others as well.

Additionally, he works at making "wings" that can help the humans to "fly" or at least launch from a mountainous height and be able to land safely.

Vikings & dragons

In HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3 the movie, the character Hiccup lives in a community with other Vikings, where they have befriended dragons once thought to be their adversaries.

  • The now beloved dragons are now kept as somewhat of a combination of pets and work animals.
  • Hiccup and his dragon Toothless can sometimes remind one of a cowboy and his horse maybe? They're certainly analogous in many ways.

While watching How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie, just when you're thinking that there must be a lot of dragon waste around, a movie character pops up on the movie screen scooping up and cleaning away dragon waste. Eww.

A dragon hunter!

In the movie, How To Train Your Dragon 3, there is a villainous dragon hunter that has come to create havoc and make the dragons feel like they are in peril once again.

This man is NOT like the humans that the dragons have come to trust!

A mate for Toothless?

In the movie, How To Train Your Dragon 3, Hiccup's dragon Toothless has come to realize that the other dragons are happy finding mates. They partake of mating rituals and dances of sorts in their courtships. Toothless himself is lonely and he would like a companion as well.

In one scene of How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie, Toothless can be seen imitating what he has seen other dragons do and practicing his own little mating dance with his own shadow on the wall! Hiccup's buddies let him know how pitiful that is and that Hiccup has got to help Toothless to find a mate!

This is pitiful! [Come on, man!] You've got to do something!

Toothless the Night Fury dragon gets to meet a female Night Fury dragon (lighter in color and called Light Fury)

Coincidentally, in How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie, another dragon of Toothless' species, The Night Fury, does exist. Toothless gets to meet a female dragon that is also a Night Fury (lighter in color and called a Light Fury, actually).

Unfortunately, that before mentioned dragon hunter is most interested in capturing Night Fury dragons.

Keeping Toothless and his new found friend, another Night Fury dragon away from that danger is one of the adventurous challenges presented in the movie, How To Train Your Dragon 3.

A cute movie

The animated children's movie How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie is a very cute movie with happy endings all around. The movie plot lines revolve around cooperation, teamwork and character building. Even some goofy characters, the twin Vikings, Roughnut and Toughnut do their share when it comes to working together to keep everyone safe.

In How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie, fraternal twin Vikings Roughnut and Toughnut, a young man and a young woman are quirky characters.

In one part of the movie, when the female twin has been captured by the dragon hunter, the dragon hunter finds her to be so talkative and annoying that he feels compelled to let her go and get out of there!!

She's actually a little proud of herself as if she negotiated her release!

Releasing the dragons

In How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie, by the movie's end, the Vikings have decided to release all of the dragons to their freedom. In a teary scene, each the individual Vikings are seen saying goodbye to each of their dragons who they love and feel bonded to but they know that it is right to let them go now.

Emotional goodbyes

Hiccup too is emotional as he says goodbye to Toothless and Hiccup is instrumental in orchestrating the plan to lead him and all the other Vikings in the community to let their dragons go.

They'll meet again

The human Vikings spend many seasons aways from the dragons but they do get to see them again eventually...

Hiccup and Astrid get married in How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie

If you take it all the way back to the first How To Train Your Dragon movie, you'll find that the movie character Astrid is a key supporting character to Hiccup in How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie and the whole movie series.

Hiccup's female friend and sidekick Astrid has grown up with him and they have been through a lot together. In How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie, Hiccup and Astrid are not just friends but boyfriend and girlfriend and near the movie's end, Hiccup and Astrid get married!

Fast forward, one day as a married couple, Hiccup and Astrid go out on a boat on the water with their two young CHILDREN, a boy and a girl! Next thing you know, they run into Toothless and HIS family! Yes, Toothless now has reproduced too and there will be more of the rare Night Fury dragons in the next generation.

At first, Hiccup and Astrid do not know for sure if to sense that their family might be in danger as Toothless can be a potentially menacing dragon. Does Toothless really remember Hiccup? It's been a long time.

Does Toothless really remember Hiccup?

Of Course!

Of course! Not to worry. Toothless couldn't forget Hiccup! Toothless the Night Fury dragon definitely ended up recognizing Hiccup also based on scent.

Astrid is then able to reassure the children, Don't worry. "He [Toothless] is not going to eat your father." They all have a lovely enthusiastic and affectionate reunion and introduce their kids to each other! Hiccup and Astrid teach their kids how to pet Toothless.

[Don't worry.] He [Toothless the dragon] is not going to eat your father.

.....It's ok! They're friends!

— Astrid to her kids, near the end of How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie

Happy Endings

Like I said, there are happy endings all around in How To Train Your Dragon 3 the movie!
