Hi everybody, Mickji here !
Since I am new on HubPages, I wish to introduce myself with an article that regards me and share with you a short piece of my life. Hopefully you will recognize yourself in it too and you will enjoy music more after reading this Hub.

Isolation Before Ocarina Discovery

Since I was 3, at school both teachers and students were mean to me. It was like if I had an ad on my head telling them to be aggressive, offensive and rude. This made me to not talk or trust anyone. So I gradually isolated myself, since talking would encourage harassment against me. I needed to feel safe.

To live alone because of this, can also result in being a very difficult and depressive thing. Such things will drive you to bad thinking. I felt all alone and sad.

In all these things, I was lucky to have a persistent sound in my head. I first had heard it on the radio and I though it was the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard. I thought the song to be classical, (because at that time I thought all instrumental music pieces were classical). So I thought it was a flute or a recorder I was hearing, that made that sound I kept hearing in my head. To tell the truth, it was difficult to tell the difference between a flute and a recorder at that time, but the sound I wanted did not come from either one of those instruments anyway. The sound I loved was warm and sometime squeaky, breathy but also clear ... It was a very special sound which had the power to drag me away from the world. I started to search out information about any flute of an orchestra, but I never found that wonderful and particular sound there (since the ocarina is not part of any orchestras and probably will never be).

One day searching information about “cosplay” (role-playing), I saw a weird and interesting guy blowing in a shiny, tiny musical instrument in a glass shop in Venice, Italy. I finally found that sound I was searching for so many years! It was magical and catchy, that was the sound I kept hearing in my head. Its name was "ocarina" and I started to find out everything I could about it.

A Short History of the Ocarina

The name ocarina, is an Italian word meaning “little goose” because of its shape. It has been around for thousands of years and it may have been the very first musical instrument invented by man. Similar wind musical instruments made of clay can be found even 12.000 years ago, at the time of ancient Chinese Emperors and Aztecs.
Some were shaped like animals with few holes and poor tuning. They were whistles mostly used to imitated the birds sounds. Also at the time, in ancient China there were an instrument called “Xun” that was shaped like an egg with a hole at the top like the flute. (These other ancient flutes cannot be considered an ocarina, but only similar wind instruments because of their characteristics.)

The ocarina that we know nowadays is an instrument which was born in Italy thanks to Giuseppe Donati. At first, like a fun game of ceramics, Mr. Donati added a recorder mouthpiece to different circular shapes made out of clay. He found that any shape could sound great. It wasn’t long before he added varying number of holes, accurate tuning and made different sizes from very small to larger sizes (for higher to deeper tones) and number of chambers. In this way a group of people could play together like an orchestra, so the Settimino of ocarine born. Modern day ocarine have multi-chambers from 2 to 4 for maximum range.

My Life Since the Ocarina

Since the ocarina, I have found friends that had also found this instrument. So by being a multi-lingual speaker, it puts me into a position to be able to speak to many people all around the Globe. This, for me was a great big deal! Now I usually begin conversations upon meeting a new person with the subject of music, and then I share my love for the ocarina and of the world’s best ocarinists.

Usually all people relate to music well and for many the ocarina is all new to them. The ocarina family of players is friendly and welcomes new players with open arms. One of the best things about the ocarina is that it is very easy to play since the progression of notes is linear whether you have one, or many chambers, it is the same progression in every chamber as the fingers go up the scale. Another positive about the ocarina is that there is really no maintenance to them. There is no adjusting or other purchases to keep them playing well. Plus, prices can be very reasonable compared to other instruments.

After I had tried to make my own ocarina with satisfactory results, I finally bought one at an ocarina festival in Budrio, Italy. You can also buy on-line a quality ocarina in plastic for about $30.00 and a quality ceramic one for $60.00.

Although I know how to speak more than just one language, I have found that understanding other people and cultures can be very difficult. I worked hard to learn to communicate with friends and acquaintances but English is not my first language (as you have may noticed yet). Learning it is a process and the ocarina was important to help me learn. My English has improved since then and I feel like I can help people to overcome things like I have.

Since I play the ocarina and I know about music, life is far better. Even though at first nobody at home loved it, and between shouts and bad things people said, I slowly improved and got a bit of recognition. Now I have learned to self-trust and proceed on that path. By blowing into my own ocarina I forgot how bad it was at that time.

I had to learn more about music and blowing technique, but I soon got it right. The ocarina community and my playing helped me when no other person would. Soon I started to make videos on different video-websites. I have met many people all around the world, improved my English a bit, and found a happy net family.

On-line there are people that are just like me and everyone tries to help each other, telling errors and secrets to success. I feel like I should share this with the whole world. In this way anyone can become a better person and find many friends, people that appreciate you, like I did. This is why I chose to write this article on HubPages. I hope this will help people to learn new things or improve what they already know.

There is an ocarina festival in Budrio, Italy held every two years and a brand new United States Ocarina Association. There you may find many interesting things about ocarina. Many ocarinists and ocarina players who will be glad to help you ( and you will find me too! ).
If you have gone through things as I have, then you may also be helped as I was by the ocarina. It also helps with relation problems caused by asperger's syndrome or others because it will connect people with you and delete the first huge barrier that is put between new acquaintances.

An Example of the Sound of the Ocarina If You Have Never Heard It

Meet Us at the Festival

Which festival? There is an ocarina festival in Budrio (Bologna), Italy which held every two years and a brand new United States Ocarina Association. There you may find many interesting things about ocarina. Many ocarinists and ocarina players who will be glad to help you choose the best ocarina for you or helping you to play better (and you will find me there too!).
The next Budrio Ocarina Festival will be on 1st - 2nd - 3rd May 2015 with many makers and ocarine that are waiting just you to try them.

If you have gone through things as I have, then you may also be helped as I was by the ocarina. It also helps with relation problems caused by asperger's syndrome or others because it will connect people with you and delete the first huge barrier that is put between new acquaintances.

Mickji, I loved your first article. It was interesting the way that the ocarina helped you to overcome so much pain in your life and turn it around. Very brave of you to try something so new and keep at it even when you were feeling all alone. You are a success story as far as I am concerned. I look forward to reading more of your hub articles. I voted up, interesting and useful. Welcome to the Hubpages community. Bob.

I really thank you, Bob ! That was the reason why I first made an ocarina before buying one. I didn't knew if I had the strenght or the skill to learn it. In my environment I could neither sing a song that I was scolded.

At first I was feeling all alone both in trying to understand how to play the ocarina and learning music, but then a good thing attracted another and soon everything was better, letting me forget the bad things happened in the past.

I also thank you for the votes, I didn't knew that people can make two votes, I'm still new at this thing but I hope to learn to use this too and create useful Hubs. Keep working hard ! The next article will be about cooking and then music for beginners.

I was no problem, friend. I am impressed with your use of English prose. I know that English is said to be the hardest language to learn not only because of the words but the order of the nouns and adjectives. I want to tell you that a person can hardly tell your newness to the language. I think you will find this getting easier and easier. I can sense that you will continue to write and I look forward to learning new things and to being an avid reader of everything you write.

I think that German is the most difficult language, after traditional written Chinese. Grammar is a very difficult topic especially if your mother tongue is as simple as Japanese. European languages are more similar ... But the best world language is music ^^. There are few rules and everybody can appreciate it. I really hope to write more articles that has a better quality step by step while I write... I cross my fingers and I really thank you for your presence Bob !

I know so little about languages other than English. But the more I know about music the better I seem to communicate with everyone! And I will read every one of the articles you write. If you have any questions about writing, just ask. God bless you, Mickji.
