Every aspect of your body must be in sync in order to produce the highest quality sound just as every aspect of an instrument must be in sync for a clarinet or a trumpet to create the perfect sound.

Many new vocalists make the mistake of thinking that singing is isolated to using the vocal cords, the throat, and/or the lungs. But this is not true. Singing begins with the breath and with posture. How to Check Your Posture with Simple Exercises

Proper posture can be easily achieved using simple techniques and exercises to train the muscles of the back, shoulders, and neck. Women especially can have difficulty with proper posture due to anatomical differences in the chest. Often females over-use their pectoral muscles and under-use their back and shoulder muscles which emphasizes a “hunched” back or poor posture. While vocalists of both genders should be conscious of their posture, females should make extra effort to perfect this essential vocal technique.

There are several exercises that can measure and perfect singing posture. One exercise to measure your posture and correct it is to stand against a wall with your heels backed up directly against the wall. In this position your heels, calves, buttocks, shoulders and head touch the wall. This is correct posture and an easy way to get accustomed to the position your body takes when it is in proper posture.

Another exercise requires you to stand flat footed on a solid, firm, surface. Gently lift your heels off of the ground propelling your body up toward the ceiling as you move to stand on your toes. As your body moves upward, your back, shoulders, neck, legs, lower back, spine, and butt are forced into correct alignment. Gently set your heels back down on the floor, being careful not to alter or move any of your other body parts. The position of your body as you set your heels firmly on the ground will be correct singing posture!
