Inspirational Songs of Comfort to Move Through the Loss of a Loved One

Updated on September 5, 2016

When someone you cherish and love dies, the pain and loss can be unbearable at first. I know as I have lost a very good friend and watching her kids lose their mom is even heartbreaking. Not everyone grieve the same way. Some people grieve and cope with the loss in healthy ways, some just do not know what to do and end up drinking away their sorrows. Whether you lose someone through an illness, accident, miscarriage, or any other unfortunate Here are some event songs to help through the loss.

Former American Idol Contestant Dan Gokey, wrote some songs to deal with his own grief of losing his first wife to cancer. He expresses his heart and painful journey of moving forward.

'Keep Breathing' from Music Artist, Kerrie Roberts is a wonderful, encouraging song to help those who just lost a loved one, and can't make it through the days and nights of sorrow. Here are some of the lyrics;

You wait in darkness for answers that you can't see
You know what you deserve
And you're wondering why your life is
Not what you thought it should be

When the night breaks, your heart still aches
How can you face the day?

Just keep breathing, you'll make it
Don't give in, you're not done yet
Sometimes all that you can do is
Keep breathing and believing
Don't let go, just hang on tighter a little longer

Kerrie Roberts in her amazing song, Come Back to Life. It speaks to the heart of those filled with grief, pain to come back to life, light and hope, not to cope with sorrow in dark, unhealthy ways.

Here comes Goodbye is a song recorded by Rascal Flatts, but written by Chris Sligh and Clint Lagerberg. Here are some of the lyrics.

Here comes goodbye
Here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain
Here comes me wishing things had never changed
And she was right here in my arms tonight, but here comes goodbye

I can hear her say I love you like it was yesterday
And I can see it written on her face that she had never felt this way
One day I thought I'd see her with her daddy by her side
And violins would play here comes the bride

Contemporary Artist Mark Schultz in his song 'One Day.' It is from his album All Things Possible.

Matthew West in his comforting song, Save a Place. It is from his album Something to say.

The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing... not healing, not curing... that is a friend who cares.

~Henri Nouwen

Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live. ~Norma Cousins

Sometimes allowing yourself to cry is the scariest thing you will ever do. And the bravest. It takes a lot of courage to face the facts, stare loss in the face, bare your heart and let it bleed. But it is the only way to cleanse your wounds and prepare them for healing ~Barbara Johnson

Grief changes us, sculpts us into someone who understands more deeply, hurts more often, appreciates more quickly, cries more easily, hopes more desperately, loves more openly.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal ~From a headstone in Ireland.

Grief is the last act of love we have to give to those we loved. Where there is deep grief, there was great love. ~Unknown

The loss of a mother can never be replaced, but the love of a mother can never be lost ~Kelly Flannery
