It has been two days since Nicki Minaj performed as her alter-ego "Roman" for the 2012 Grammy Awards, and viewers are still talking about it! She has definitely made a lasting impression and is getting some heat from religious critics. The majority say it was a disgrace and she offended the Catholic Church. Others say it wasn't offensive at all; she based the whole performance from the Exorcism movie. Although Minaj’s fans love her, some found her performance to be scary, crazy, and weird. Some spectators feel she's trying too hard to get attention by mimicking other famous singers. Thus, the music industry has had its share of famous singers being “odd” and stirring up controversy. One of them is pop icon Madonna.

It’s ironic that Nicki Minaj had the Catholic Church enactment for her performance because Madonna also did something similar back in 1989. In the music video “‘Til Death Do Us Part ” (from the album Like a Prayer released in March of 1989), Madonna is confessing to a priest when she suddenly starts engaging in sexual behavior with him. She received a lot of criticism from the Catholic Church and some of her fans. As a result, the video was banned and she missed out on an endorsement with Pepsi . Now let’s fast forward to 2012; Nicki Minaj’s video “Stupid H**” has recently been banned from BET. A BET representative described the video as “being explicit”, and TMZ also made a comment about it, stating the video “displayed several nearly naked female figures.” Could Nicki be following the same footsteps as Madonna? Did Minaj get the “Catholic Church enactment” idea from Madonna? Or was it her original, imaginative idea?

Although Madonna had stirred up controversy from her racy songs and videos, she succeeded in being one of the biggest pop icons in music’s history. After releasing a total of 29 albums and having movie roles throughout her career, she manages to reincarnate herself with each passing generation. Thus far, Nicki Minaj is also having a successful career. Since April 2007, she has released mix tapes (with the help of Lil Wayne) and her voice has been featured in several artists’ songs. Minaj also won “an award for Best Hip-Hop Female at the annual BET awards.”

So is Nicki Minaj the next Madonna for our generation? It’s hard to say because Madonna has been building her credibility as a music artist and actress since the ‘80’s, while Nicki Minaj’s fame just started surfacing in 2007. Only time will tell...

I thought Nicki Minaj was trying to be like Lil Kim. However I do agree she stirs up controversies just like Madonna.

mazing article! Much love and respect.

      @ gail641- Thank you! :-)

@ Cardisa- I do agree with you. I felt it was just entertainment; however, she needs to come up with something more original instead of "borrowing" from other artists.

@ InterFACETalent- It's true Nicki is representing the Hip-Hop community, yet she should take an original approach to her style. Almost a year ago, Lady Gaga did the same thing with her alter-ego "Judas" (

      Hello Cunn26, welcome to Hubpages!

I can't say I liked Niki, but I can say I loved Madonna. I think Niki is trying too hard and I didn't like her performace the last time she was in Jamaica. I don't care whether or not she stirred up the Catholic church, what are the complaining about anyway? Shouldn't they be more concerned about their priests who are messing with young boys? They are being so self-righteous when the world knows they are doing sinful stuff. It's just entertainment.

I thought she was trying to be the next Gaga until her performance at the Grammys and then I thought now she wants to be like Madonna? I think she should try to be herself, but that probably won't work. I'm not a fan of hers. Great hub though!
