Updated on February 24, 2015

Item Song Pioneer Jayamalini

Name : Jayamalini, born Alivelu Manga

Date of Birth: December 22, 1958

Profession: actress, dancer

Sexiest Dance Number: "Mamalu-Mamalu O Papalu Papalu" in the movie Maha Shaktimaan

Jayamalini was one of the most successful actresses and dancers in early "item numbers," the short musical dance sequences in Indian film that often feature sexy moves between men and women. Jayamalini was an early "vamp," appearing only during a provocative dance number in which the main heroine is only a spectator.

Born Alivelu Manga, Jayamalini became extremely popular in the late 1970s and 1980s in South Indian cinema, especially Tamil and Telugu films. Her career spanned two decades and she appeared in more than 500 movies.

Mamalu-Mamalu O Papalu Papalu

Only rarely did Jayamalini appear as a film's major character. Most of her work was as the sexy dancer and entertainer in short dance and comedy performances within a film's story.

In 1978 she had a dance number in Shalimar, a film starting Rex Harrison, Dharmendra, and Zeenat Aman. The film had both an English and a Hindi version.

Classic Jayamalini Item Number

The late 1970s and early 1980s was the golden age of South Indian cinema. Item numbers were more glamorous during those years. When Jayamalini was at the height of her popularity, it was common for separate actresses to appear in a film's musical numbers. It was a speciality. Today, young actresses use musical dance numbers to launch their careers as mainstream actresses.
