Karl has been a freelance writer for over 10 years. He's passionate about music, art, and writing!

This is my first in a series of reviews of albums available on the Creative Commons music site Jamendo. I've discovered that there's so much great music out there that doesn't get recognized or explored, so this is my attempt to explore some of those artists and give you my honest take on the music that they make. The fact that these artists make their music available as part of the Creative Commons only adds to their appeal for me.

JekK - Strong - Album Review

The first thing that you'll notice about JekK is that they've got a strong grasp of soulful sounds. The overall vibe of Strong is lush and full of groove. This is music that is infused with an undeniable sense of soulful passion.

All of the different flavours of the vocals on Strong are something I found quite pleasing. Each performance has its own character, but as a whole they infuse the album with more of that soul. The overall vibe falls strongly in the R+B vocal tradition and I think it is quite effective.

As for the beats that underpin the album, they're solid. There's a little Euro-dance in there, a little funk and some house along with more R+B flavours. Overall the sound has a relaxing quality to it. This is definitely an easy-going, summery album. It's one I can imagine playing at the beach.

This is not an album for people looking for sonic adventures. Nothing here will blow you away with innovation or truly challenge your ears, but that's not really the point. In the vein in which the album has been created, this enjoyably breezy pop-dance music fits perfectly and is eminently satisfying.

Even if I didn't know that this music was from Paris, I'd feel the vibe of French electropop in it. There's a certain quality in French electropop, something that's airy and light, a quality that is definitely present on Strong.

The other factor that I'd have to single out on Strong is the quality of production. The calibre of audio technology has risen to such a level that independently produced albums are now incredibly polished and full sounding. Strong is no exception. The mix has a lot of depth to it and even compressed for streaming, it still manages to hit the highs and lows without flattening things too drastically.

Overall, then, I'd recommend this album. It is something that you can listen to for the purposes of chilling out, but there's enough substance to it that if you choose to listen a little more closely, you won't be disappointed. Put this one on to bask in the summer sun while sipping a drink involving umbrellas and bright colours.
