Jim Thorpe - The World's Greatest Athlete

Jim Thorpe credited his father for teaching him a deep respect for the beauty of nature. "He also taught me to exercise, to build up every part of my body and to keep it strong and clean and healthy."

From the beginning, Jim Thorpe was athletically inclined, and loved sports. From college all star, to Olympic champion, to professional baseball player, to professional football player - Jim Thorpe was special in that he could do it all.

In 1950, the nation's press selected Jim Thorpe as the most outstanding athlete of the first half of the 20th Century and in 1996-2001, he was awarded ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Century.

Native American Pride

American Olympic Athletes Jim Thorpe, Josephine Mckim, 1932 --

"They were always portraying dad as that poor drunken Indian," said Jack Thorpe, who now works for his tribe. People lose sight of "who he was and what he accomplished in his lifetime. He did a lot of firsts. He was way ahead of his time."

My Pal, the King, Tom Mix, Jim Thorpe, on Set, 1932 --

"Despite his many achievements, Jim Thorpe died with no appreciable wealth on March 28, 1953 at the age of 64. Instead, he left a legacy of excellence.

In overcoming obstacles and adversity from his modest beginnings and throughout his adult life, Jim Thorpe continues to inspire young and old." -- Jim Thorpe Sports Days

I had never heard of him before, sounds like he was an all American hero. Nicely done.
