All You Need to Know About Katy Perry

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Katy's parents Maurice and Mary Hudson were Pentecostal pastors. Katy and her siblings were raised to be religious and in a highly religious household. Perry has a younger brother named David and an older sister named Angela. The children attended religious schools through out their youth and moved around a lot while their parents went from church to church helping the churches start up. Perry has stated in interviews that she often felt out of place in school because she was always moving and her family did not have a lot of money. Perry's family often relied on food stamps and the church food pantries for meals.

Growing up with such religious parents, Katy was very protected from outside influences. Certain products were not allowed in her home such as Lucky Charms and Deviled Eggs. She also was not allowed to listen to popular music or watch MTV. Katy was restricted to gospel music and the only taste of the outside world she received was when she was at a friend's house.

Katy began her career as a gospel singer and on March 6, 2011 she released her first gospel album "Katy Hudson." The album sold 200 copies. Eventually Katy began to stray away from gospel music and moved to Los Angeles. When moving to L.A. Katy adopted the name Katheryn Perry so she wouldn't be confused with Kate Hudson, however, in 2003 she started going by the stage name of Katy Perry. Katy was signed to The Island Def Jam Music Group but was dropped and then she was signed to Columbia. When she was eighty percent finished with her album. Columbia dropped her too.

During this period of time, Katy sang backup vocals on Mick Jagger's song "Old Habits Die Hard" and gained notoriety by appearing in her boyfriend's music video "Cupid's Chokehold." At the time Katy was dating Travie McCoy from "Gym Class Heroes."

Katy was soon signed to Virgin Records and she was soon releasing her hot singles "I Kissed A Girl" and "Hot n Cold." Perry had finally reached mainstream success in 2008. Her first single "I Kissed a Girl" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

In 2010, Katy released her next big single with Snoop Dog "California Gurls" which was an instant success. From there Perry follow with the chart topping singles "Teenage Dream" and "Firework." Katy was a force to be reckoned with and a recognized household name.

In 2011, Katy went on a worldwide tour making over 59 million dollars. In 2013, Perry released her fourth album "Prism." Her first single off of "Prism" was the highly successful "Roar." It was followed by "Dark Horse" which also performed very well. Perry then began another worldwide concert tour and Billboard named Perry Woman of the year.
