Introduction

Freestyle rapping is definitely an art, and like all arts, it's something you can learn if you practice hard enough. Here are some tips that will help you improve your freestyles:

Steps To Freestyle Rapping

STEP 1

Writing. The first step in improving your freestyle is writing a lot of rap songs. You are probably wondering how will this help if I'm writing rap songs? The more you write rap songs the more rhymes that are embedded in your head. In this way, when you are freestyling and you say a word you intend to rhyme with something else, you can think of something quickly because you have used these rhymes before. For example, if you are going to use the word technical for the first time, it will be very difficult to think of a rhyme off the top of your head.

Another thing you can do is get a rhyming dictionary. You can purchase it on amazon, from Barnes & Nobles or you can google search rhyming dictionary. The rhyming dictionary helps a lot because it not only expands your vocabulary but it embeds a lot of complicated rhyming words in your head. On your spare time read the rhyming dictionary for 30 minutes everyday and continue to rhyme with these words on a daily basis. If you read this everyday and never stop then you will be amazed how many words you rhyme with.

STEP 2

When you are in the middle of a freestyle, always remember this: it's better to spit a line that doesn't rhyme than it is to slip up and drop the freestyle. You can always save yourself in the next line. For example, you could say "I'm the hottest rapper alive and the sickest/Spit wicked and crazy lyrics (uh...) like a tazmanian devil. I'm a master on the mic so you not my level. By changing the rhyme scheme you may actually get more people interested. Think of a freestyle like controlling the system in a roller coaster. It's more exciting when there are twists, loops and turns. If you throw people off guard then more people will respond to your freestyles.

STEP 3

Be observant. There are times when you will run out of stuff to say. This happens to a lot of rappers, so to keep their rhymes going they will pick out an object or a person and rhyme with it. To be great at this skill, try picking out an object in your kitchen, living room, basement, or bedroom and try to rhyme about it. You can take a walk in the park and try rhyming about anything that you see. If you do this everyday you will find yourself freestyling in your sleep. For your information, don't worry about trying to make sense with your rhymes. That will come later once you start advancing with words embedded in your head.

STEP 4

Don't be a hot dog. In other words, know when to pass the mic to someone else. I've seen many freestylers rap very long and it becomes tedious to hear. The best thing to do is keep your freestyles under one minute. It keeps your audience entertain and it's more fun for everyone. If you see anybody in a circle having a rap cypha then jump in and freestyle. It's all about having fun with words and being creative.

CONCLUSION

I hope this information is helpful to you as it was for me. Continue to practice every day. The more you practice the more you get better. Good luck on freestyling.
