Lena Dunham: Fat and Ugly?
Is Lena Dunham fat and ugly?
The star of HBO's Girls is admittedly different looking. A little thicker, a little more brunette, a little more round-nosed than most actresses. In addition, a lot of people think her TV show is obnoxious.
A New York Post columnist called Lena's character on Girls a "fat chick". In reality, I don't think Lena Dunham's dress size can be more than a size 6.
In movie world maybe that is "big," but in the real world that is a highly desirable size. Howard Stern also referred to Lena as a "fat chick", but he has since got on good terms with her.
A lot of people don't even give Dunham a chance because she doesn't look like that run-of-the-mill Hollywood stereotype. She isn't a size 0, isn't tan, doesn't have implants ... In other words, she is the everyday American girl. Do we hate our own American girls and women?
When Did it Become Acceptable to Openly Insult Women's Bodies?
This is definitely a modern phenomenon. The media of our parents' day didn't have an open platform for people to shout obscenities and insults for all the world to hear. Men and women, boys and girls would basically cluster in groups and gossip about women they thought were "fat" or "ugly" privately.
Our grandparents were taught that a gentleman should never insult a lady. Along with the belief of never cursing in front of a lady. My mentality is still stuck in that age. It always will be. And I am quite young myself. A woman wrote the insulting New York Post article, and that is perhaps more painful.
It's very disheartening to see so much hostility and anger directed at women, simply because they look different than the "ideal." Where does that anger come from? Why is it there? Insulting someone online is now part of the modern culture, whether it's in a news article, a forum, a comment section, or a Facebook post. Most insults don't have any sense at all in them. So they must be an excuse to vent anger from other life issues.
Lena Dunham is not fat or ugly. But for those of you who think it is okay to be harsh about her looks, remember -- she is laughing all the way to the bank whether you like her or not.
