You Are Not Alone
No.1: Michael Jackson
You Are Not Alone by Michael Jackson, is the second single hit from the album HIStory. This is a ballad type of song whose composition to R. Kelly is attributed to the difficult times in his troubled personal life. Jackson could relate and moved forward on the recording.
On the business side, You Are Not Alone was quite a success. In the Guinness World Record book, it is held as the first song of the Billboards thirty seven year history to debut at number one. Not long after that, it went platinum by the RIAA. In most all of the major markets, it peaked extremely well. This was Michael Jackson's last number one hit song in his lifetime before he died.
Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman
No.2: Bryan Adams
Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman was written by Bryan Adams, Michael Kamen and Robert John Lange, and then recorded by Bryan Adams for the popular film, Don Juan DeMarco. The music to the song is used throughout the film. The song is also featured three times in the film and performed twice, once in Spanish, and then performed by Bryan Adams during the end.
It remained at the number one spot for five weeks in a row on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was the third number one hit for the team and ended up being nominated for an Oscar.
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
No. 3: U2
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me performed by U2 for the Batman Forever soundtrack album. It became a top of chart number one single in the hometown of U2, Ireland. In the United Kingdom, Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me hit number two on the charts and in United States, it hit number sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100. It hit number one on the United States Billboard Album Rock Tracks and on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. U2 received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song.
No.4: Soul For Real
Candy Rain by Soul for Real was a hit Rhythm and Blues single. The song was written by Ali Shaheed Muhammad, harnish Stuart, Dwight Myers,Malik Taylor, Owen Mcintyre, Samuel Barnes, Jean Claude Olivier, and Terri Robinson. Candy Rain spent three weeks at the top number one spot on the United States Rhythm and Blues chart and peaked out at number two on the United States Billboard Hot 100 for another three weeks. Candy Rain also placed at number one on the Billboard's Top40 Rhythm Crossover chart and did moderately well on mainstream Top 40 radio.
It was certified gold by the RIAA as it sold over 800,000 copies.
Boyz II Men - One Sweet Day
No. 5: Mariah Carey
One Sweet Day was performed and sung by Mariah Carey and the Rhythm and Blues group, Boyz II Men. It was written by Mariah Carey, Walter Afanasieff and Boyz II Men (Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Michael McCary. One Sweet Day was released as the album's second single. The song is about the death of a loved one and now realized how they had taken them for granted.
One Sweet Day was acclaimed the world over from many and was highly ranked by Rolling Stone’s reader polls, and spent 16 weeks in top rankings on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. One Sweet Day was ranked by Billboard as the most successful song of the 90’s.
Bullet with Butterfly Wings
No. 6: Smashing Pumpkins
Bullet with Butterfly Wings was performed by the American alternative rock band, The Smashing Pumpkins and was their lead single from the album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Bullet with Butterfly Wings won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. It also was The Smashing Pumpkin’s first Top 40 United States chart topper, peaking at number twenty two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. For six weeks, it stayed at the number two spot on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and then peaked at number four on the Mainstream Rock chart. In 2009, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, was named 91st best hard rock song of all times by VHS.
No. 7: Oasis
Wonderwall was performed by the English rock band Oasis. It was written songwriter and bands guitarist, Noel Gallagher. The song is about an imaginary friend who will come to save you from yourself.
The song was put out as the third single from the album (What’s the Story)Morning Glory and topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, and Spain. The song also climbed to the top ten on ten other charts including Canada, and the United States at number 5 and 8 respectively. The single went platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. And gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
No. 8: Jodeci
Freek’n You was recorded by American Rhythm and Blues group, Jodeci and put together for their third album, The Show, the After Party, the Hotel. Freek’n You was released as the album's first single. It peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Magazine touted it as one of the best selling singles of 1995. It was later certified gold by the RIAA for sales over 600,000 copies.
No. 9: Pulp
Common People was created and sung by the English alternative rock band, Pulp. It was the lead single of their fifth album titled, Different Class. It hit the United Kingdom chart at number two and became Pulps signature song during the process.
The song was written by band members, Nick Banks, Jarvis Cocker, Candida Doyle, Steve Mackey, and Russell Senior.
This is a Call
No. 10: Foo Fighters
This Is A Call by the Foo Fighters, is their first major single that they released. The song debuted at number twelve on the Modern Rock TRacks chart and then roe quickly to peak at number two. This Is A Call also went to number five on the United Kingdom's Singles Chart, The band played this song live on the David Letterman shop but never made a video it. David Letterman liked the band so much, he invited them back eleven times.
