Luther's: Dance With My Father

Updated on December 13, 2016

Dance With My Father

It was weird, as I was driving home from school and listening to WBLS, "Dance With My Father" was playing. For some reason there was this dead eerie silence, as the song played, as if this was some omen of Luther's passing. On July 4, 2005, I learned that Luther along with Barry White had passed away. As a tribute to Luther, I downloaded "Dance With My Father" along with many other favorites Luther song and burned them on a CD. I played Luther's song in my car that entire summer. "Dance With My Father" is a beautiful song and will always be Luther's greatest hit. I always felt as I listened to the song that this would be Luther's last and final song. As with "We Will Rock You and "Waterfalls," I decided to include comments on the music video from YouTube. I hadn't considered that the majority of the people commenting, many had lost their fathers. It was painful reading their comments, so I included on this lens a Quote on Grief, A Poem on Grief, as well as various links to the Grief, Loss and Recovery web site.

Dance With My Father Lyrics

In Memoriam: Luther Vandross (April 20, 1951 - July 1, 2005)

Back when I was a child, before life removed all the innocence

My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around 'til I fell asleep

Then up the stairs he would carry me

And I knew for sure I was loved

If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him

I'd play a song that would never, ever end

How I'd love, love, love

To dance with my father again

When I and my mother would disagree

To get my way, I would run from her to him

He'd make me laugh just to comfort me

Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep

He left a dollar under my sheet

Never dreamed that he would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him

I'd play a song that would never, ever end

'Cause I'd love, love, love

To dance with my father again

Sometimes I'd listen outside her door

And I'd hear how my mother cried for him

I pray for her even more than me

I pray for her even more than me

I know I'm praying for much too much

But could you send back the only man she loved

I know you don't do it usually

But dear Lord she's dying

To dance with my father again

Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream

A Poem On Grief: He's Free

by Judy Gagnon

I knew you had to go away

it was your time you see

but I didn't take the time to face

that you were leaving me.

You weren't afraid of dying

for you knew what lay in store

in the blinking of an eye

or the closing of a door.

You shared with us a journey

that only you could see

and helped us understand God's way

as it was meant to be.

Life had so restricted you

your spirit is now free

to go explore the universe

for all eternity.

"Even though this video has only three songs on it

it is still more than worth the price.

The audio and video quality are both superb."

"I loved the videos for Dance w/ my Father, Take You Out and Can Heaven Wait. I found this DVD on Amazon on accident, and am I every grateful. I rewatched it until my husband begged me to turn it off. I am so thankful for J Records for releasing this DVD and for Amazon for letting me find it on a Luther search. It is only three videos, but if you are truly a Luther fan .... you can't be without this DVD."

"This mini DVD contains 3 songs, the main one is the title one. It was made after Luther had passed on. All his musical friends pay tribute with their fathers or children. Beautifully and sensitively made. A tear dropped when I first saw it. The other two track are Luther gems!"

I really don't believe that there is a song that can touch you as much as this song. Its so moving, but at the same time, so hard to listen to without tearing up. I have both of my parents still, thank God, but the song still connects to me. Being older now, remembering the good times, when life was pure as a child, and how the love and support of the most important man in your life was there connects with me. And just wanting to have a moment of that back (for you and your Mom) connects with me.

The most important part of the song that connects with me is that I still can dance with my father and I need to cherish it!

Probably the most moving song of all-time!
