A First Look at Maasa Sudo

Introduction to Maasa Sudo

Of all the members of the girl pop music group Berryz Kobo, there are very few that we have not discussed or even mentioned. One of these members is Maasa Sudo (sometimes her name is spelled Maasa Sudou). Berryz Kobo was an eight member girl group at its height or peak and Sudo just happened to be one of those members. Sudo is now 25 years old. Like all of the Berryz Kobo members, Sudo got her career started at a very young age. She was only eight when she was chosen to be part of a 15 member girl group called Hello! Project Kids. For those of you that need to refresh your memory about exactly what Hello! Project is, that information is widely available on the World Wide Web. This article is only going to focus on the life and career of Maasa specifically.

About the Song Cha Cha Sing and Maasa Sudo's Role in it

My introduction to Maasa Sudo and the other members came about while listening to the song called Cha Cha Sing. Each one of these members has done a solo version of that song. These members either stand still for most of the song’s duration or they sing and do various hand and body movements. It is just part of the choreography that the members have to master.

Appearance in the Music Video for Boogie Train and Start With Berryz Kobo

In 2003, Sudo’s career took an interesting turn. She made an appearance in singer Miki Fujimoto’s music video for the single Boogie Train. Also joining her in this video were Berryz Kobo members Chinami Tokunaga and Momoko Tsugunaga. As of 2018, Tokunaga is probably my favorite member of Berryz Kobo but even that is a tough one to decide. It was on January 14, 2004 that Sudo was picked to join the group which would eventually be called Berryz Kobo along with seven other girls, two of which I have already written about.

Her Indoor Soccer Career

It was also in 2004 that Sudo became involved with more than just singing. She was part of the Hello! Project futsal or indoor soccer team called Gatas Youth. However this team was revived in 2006 under a different name called Little Gatas, featuring members from the groups C-ute and Berryz Kobo. It would not be until 2007 that Sudo would become a full-time member of the team. In 2009, she left that indoor soccer team on her own accord. The stated reason given by Maasa is due to the fact that she could not match the level or ability of the other high level players.

Middle Career 2006-2009

In 2006, Sudo joined one of the two groups called Wonderful Hearts. Wonderful Hearts was one of the groups along with Elder Club and these two groups were referred to as concert units. In May and September of 2008, Sudo held two solo events. This is an event that even members of groups such as AKB48 have done. It was in 2009 at her 3rd solo event that Maasa Sudo played guitar and that’s something she can do. It was also in this year that she became part of a revived pop music group ZYX-a (pronounced Zicks alpha). This group had former Morning Musume members Risa Niigaki, Koharu Kusumi, and current member of ANGERME Ayaka Wada as well as a few other pop music singers.

Sudo's Acting Work

Sudo has also concentrated her work life on the acting side. One example of this is when she starred in the movie called King Game in 2011. This is a horror movie based upon the novel of the same name by the author Nobuaki Kanazawa. Once again, members of both Berryz Kobo and C-ute took part as actresses in this film. It makes me think that both of these groups could be like sisters from different parents because they were both involved in several different facets of the entertainment industry in Japan. In May 2012, Sudo starred in a stage play called B.B. or bumpy buddy with Miyabi Natsuyaki and former Morning Musume member Kei Yasuda. Also in 2012, she would star in another stage play called Cat’s Eye. Joining her as co-stars in the play were Yurina Kumai and Risako Sugaya, two of the 8 members of Berryz Kobo. Also joining them in this play were Maimi Yajima, Saki Nakajima, and Mai Hagiwara, all now former members of C-ute. Yajima was the former leader of Hello! Project. All of these girls formed the group called Cat’s Eye 7 and sang the theme song for that play. The play would last from September 22nd through the 30th of 2012.

Her Birthday Events and Graduation from Berryz Kobo

Sudo would have birthday events to celebrate her birthday in 2013 and 2014. When Berryz Kobo went on a hiatus in March 2015, she basically also graduated from the group as well as Hello! Project. She would switch agencies, signing a contract with the talent agency called JP Room. That is a brief look at the life and career of Tokyo’s Maasa Sudo. But who really is Maasa Sudo besides one of the members of Berryz Kobo?

A Few Interesting Facts About Maasa Sudo

  • Her mother’s name is Maki.
  • She was at one time the tallest member of Berryz Kobo but Yurina Kumai surpassed her in 2004.
  • Maasa was known as the most natural member of the group.
  • Akane Haga and Kanon Fukuda of Morning Musume view Sudo as the coolest member of all of Hello! Project. That’s very elite company to be in for sure!
  • She is still the only member of Berryz Kobo to have an account on Twitter.
