Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur

Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur breathed her last this year 2009. She was the queen of Sawai Mansingh, Maharaja of Jaipur in Rajputana. Kachhawa dynasty governed Rajputana for more than a millennia. They shifted their capital from Amber to Jaipur as Sawai Jaisingh of the dynasty established Jaipur in the 18th century. Since then, Jaipur remained as the capital of the kingdom.

Maharani Gayatri Devi was born in the Royal family of Cooch Behar state of Bengal, India and married to Sawai Mansingh. She was a beauty queen of her time and a fashion icon. Vogue magazine mentioned her among ten most beautiful lady in the world. She was a very good horse rider and Polo was her favorite sports. She was brave, literate, politician and stateswoman of her time.

It is believed that Sawai Mansingh won a polo match against her and won the heart of the beauty queen Gayatri Devi.

She fought and won several elections in independent India after the abolition of the monarchy. She was a leader of Swatantra party in India and became Member of Parliament from Jaipur. Swatantra party was in opposition at her time while Congress party was ruling in India and also in the state of Rajasthan. Later on, she supported Bharatiya Janata Party.

She blessed Girdharilal Bhargava to be a member of parliament (MP) from Jaipur. Mr. Bhargava won parliamentary elections for consecutive six times (1989- 2009) representing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

She was a strong lady and opposed Indira Gandhi, mighty Prime Minister of India throughout her life. She was honored as Rajmata (Queen mother), after the death of her husband Maharaja Sawai Mansingh, the last ruler of Jaipur.

When you’re beautiful, rich, and famous; there would come numerous proposal and offers. That’s how life works.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and…

"Beauty exists merely in the mind which contemplates them."

In 1992, I acquired a Sapphire /Diamond Ring and Earrings’ set once owned by Maharani Gayatri Devi, Rajmata of Jaipur.

Are you intrigued and want to explore further the possibilities… please call me… or drop me a line?

Best wishes for your continued journey to fame and fortune.

      Warm regards,

Really, Maharani Gayathri Devi was not only a beauty queen, but also very intelligent in public affairs and diplomatic affairs. She loved her state very much. When I was a school boy, her photoes frequently used to appear in news papers with some news of her. When i had been on a detailed tour to Rajasthan in Jaipur, Showing me Birla mandir, the rikshawala told me.pointing to the palace behind it, " here lives Maharani Gayathri Devi".I wanted to see her, if only I could get an interview!
